I moved to house with a fig tree 2 years ago and had never eaten a fresh fig before in my Life. I'm now hooked. Lol. At the end of summer we bought a house and moved. This year I will be planting a bunch of fig trees using this method. Thanks!
Just finished popping up my first attempt at this method. But i did half with a perlite/vermiculite mix and half with a coco/perlite mix. Super easy and i love the self-contained individual humidity domes. Looking forward to 19/19 success.
Ben, I have had 10 figs in the ground in Pendleton, Oregon for 7 years and have not lost a single one. Temperatures to -10 F. They die back to the crown and don't produce figs, but they grow really well.
Perfect for early starts indoors. Cups, cartons...are messy! Thanks! Plus maintained humidity is safer with rotation, the roots are stronger too, most don't even pay enough attention to them once they're in the dirt. I'm floored, missing my garden plans!
Great video, I too use the bagging method for my figs, however the only difference is that I cut small portions of the corners of the bags off, they seem to dry out much faster, I like your idea of the holes with toothpicks!! Thank you very much for sharing and look forward to future videos!!
economical, i bought the bags on e-bay thank you. i also bought cuttings. soaked them, then decided to put in light potting mix. hope they do ok. much love and god,s peace be with you.
Ben, I am NEW to growing my own figs from cuttings and have had multiple failures doing different methods. It is so frustrating that it seems so easy to others to do and yet so damn difficult for me. So I am doing what you are doing in this video. it is January 13, 2023 and I want to start doing this same exact thing. I bought the HP PROMIX and the U-LINE bags and a big plastic bin & lid. Once I fill all my bags and place them into the bin, you don't instruct on what to do next. Do I place (snap) the lid firmly on the bin or set it loosely set it on top of the binand allow some air flow in? Do I place the bin in a well lit sun filled spare bedroom or in a dark closet? Do I need a heat mat underneath the bin? Do i need to add water at anytime throughout the next 2 or 3 months? Does a house ambient air temperature of approx 70 degrees good?
you can keep the bin half way open and leave it room temp. if it can be in the 70s great. NO additional light is needed until you see leaves. no sprits or water needed until roots are seen and the media dries out.
@@BenBSeattle THANKYOU so much for answering my questions. I have 20 lollipops made up done exactly as you did. Each one is wrapped with a rubber band and toothpick holes in the bags (about 15 - 20 holes in each bag). Placed in upstirs spare bedroom on floor in the corner away from the window. Fingers are crossed!! 😉😉😀😀
@@BenBSeattle BEN!! IT WORKED!!! I now have 20 fig pops ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL ROOTS!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I have now started to plant them in 1 gallon buckets filled with potting soil and have them sitting on a table in a bedroom near the window to hopefully develop the roots more in their new home.
Thanks for the great instruction ! I was referred to your channel by TD from the Texas Boys. I got some cuttings of Chicago Hardy Figs from them ! Thank you so much. Ill checking out more videos ! Many Blessings.
My name is Ron I'm in Phoenix Arizona and I was looking at your pic popping suggestion and I was wondering what percentage of these are successful I've tried big popping before but didn't have as much success if you respond I greatly appreciate it thank you
How many days do you let the fig cuttings stay in the pop bag method before you pot them up. I have some in cups and they are 20 days old with some roots.
Hey Ben how do you keep them warm. I us to live in Florida all my life and had no problem cutting a fig tree sticking the cutting in water and three days later have great roots. Now I’m in Virginia. I went down right after Christmas to a dear cousins house who has a turkey fig that came from Italy to New York to Florida and the figs are like a pear and sweet as sugar. I was able to get cuttings from the new owner and brought them back to Virginia. I root toned them and have them trying to root under a uv light. Do you have any advice to get roots on them in the dead of winter? Thanks for your time. Mike
Hi Ben What do you do with all your cuttings and where do you purchase all your unique varieties? I'm just above you in BC and we're so limited in terms of varieties one can find locally.
You use this method for figs specifically, but I'm curious of other branchs will root with this method. My objective is to make some cuttings of trees out in nature, root them at home, and then turn them into bonsais.
Do you suggest starting this cutting sometime around Nov and keep them in bags throughout winter, plant them in pot when spring comes? I live in Victoria BC, zone 9a. Thanks.
With the cup method, you can water as needed, but also have water loss due to air evaporation. Is the moisture level more constant with this method since the bag is closed? Also, where will you list them for sale when ready?
Yes this method has the moisture more consistent with less evaporation. But once the roots are ready to feed it's basically time to up pot or open up the rubberband to add water. It's more about getting the most amount of cuttings into a once space. Probably in the spring is when the duplicates be ready for sale
That makes sense. I'm liking this idea and will try it. Thank you for sharing! Your collection is no so diverse!. Can't wait to see your availability list this spring.
Ben! Have a question for you! Need yr help?? I've got some cuttings from November! And put them in the fridge !they look good!what I do now??? Take them out?? AND??? For how long a day??? And then put them propagate? My question is how long after the fridge? They're still cold from fridge ! ???Thanks Ben!
Ben - Thank you for sharing!! Seems as if some people do not make the toothpick holes until they start to see roots after a few weeks. Any thoughts on this method vs. creating a few holes from the start?
You can also use those biodegradable cloth pot bags. This way you can plant directly into the soil once they root without risk root damage getting them out of pot or bag
Ben B. Seattle These aren't pots. They are bags like what you use in this video but made out of fabric. goo.gl/images/PhC4xw You can also spray the bag if you need to top up the water.

Ben, An obvious and simple question about the use of Mycorrhizae in the rooting mix: how much of this stuff you would use in the final mix? Say, if you need a gallon of water to adequately wet you perlite/peat moss mix, how many teaspoons of mycorrhizae would you recommend in one gallon of water? Thanks.
yes just be careful with it. It can get water logged more so than peat moss and can rot the cutting. I've tried it before and it's just not as forgiving

Can you use worm castings instead of the mycorrhiza?
Hi ,
How do you water the figs with this method ?

You dont have to water cuttings the moisture should feed the roots
How long, on average, does it take for the roots to start forming?

I root figs yr around. But ideally root them in the winter so that you'll have a plant that can grow early in the spring and throughout the summer.
How do you prepare the cuttings ?
anti bacterial soap scrub them and a few sprits of iso alcohol to kill any mold spores and then rerinse in water again
