    I can't believe how hard you are working to get these to root. Special soil mixture, perspex boxes, and artificial light! Sheer madness! In your nice, warm country, these should root incredibly easy and without any of that. Dampen a page of newspaper, wrap around each twig, put in sealed box for 2 - 3 weeks. The pot into soil. 100% success rate.

    So that is the biggest fig tree I have ever seen before. The next would be a fig growing out of the bank of the river walk in San Antonio. I've admired it for years. Just got my first fig , a VDB and was about to up pot it before I saw this video. I will wait. Thank you for the info.

    Light a candle and dip the top of the stick in the liquid wax to seal it up, that will help prevent the mold and not hurt the cutting

      If you are lucky, live in a good climate, and you have many cuttings the method does not matter, just stick them in the dirt and wait. If you have limited scions from shipping then it is worth the effort to to add heat and special mixes. The mix also helps to level changes in heat.

    Just a small suggestion I would have used the cup to scoop the potting soil,then incert the twig.
    I think that would cut down on you inhaling the perlite etc.
    Even just spirits the potting soil to calm the powder down before digging in might help,it couldn't hurt.
    Any who I really enjoyed your video.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Another great video.... I did try the heat mat and bottoms of my cuttings turned sorta mushy, lol. They were smaller cuttings barely hard wood, and I had some peat in the mix. I'm going to try your mix and pick up a few cuttings to start. Thanks for all the help you give to us new guys. My first year and waiting for plant #7( Olympian fig) to come in the mail tomorrow. One thing I do when I root cuttings is paint the top cut end with nail polish or just a dab of latex paint. It keeps them fresh and stops mold. Some people dip the end in melted wax but I don't want to have the hot wax on the cutting.

    This Year I did my best to root them... I had an obsession, I put maybe 50 stems. Direct in water, poor chance. In soil with rooting agent (aloe), chance is 1of 3. But does work. My assumption: pick always stems from where they have more knots (those from winter growing), around 1cm diameter and 15cm in lenght. They seem more effective.

    I am in the process of rooting my first set of cuttings I purchased from ebay ... Black Madeira that I purchased from a seller in Portugal ... the cuttings arrived in good shape, still moist wrapped in a paper towel and in a zip lock bag... It took two weeks to arrive and I immediately opened them and washed them with hot soapy water to get rid of any bacteria and put them in tall clear plastic cups with holes and a good fine pine bark starter mix... wet them down good and covered them with plastic bags... It's been just a week now and roots are coming out everywhere... all up and down the cutting top to bottom... but no leaf growth yet...Is that OK... lots of little white roots but will these roots prevent leaf growth??

    Does anyone else have to deal with the baby leaf growth on a new cutting falling off randomly or shriveling? This keeps happening with my new cuttings. We did have a heat wave upwards of a 100 degrees a couple days but otherwise they are in partial shade and were growing just fine.

    That tree might need to be pollinated ,I know in Turkey the Bursa fig need what they call fig flies to pollinated the trees and you need two or more trees close .

    sodium hypochlorite is much more effective than hydrogen peroxide against fungus. Many fungus actually have enzymes that break down peroxide, but they all seem to hate free chlorine. (there are mushroom culture medias that include H2O2 as an ingredient to prevent bacteria growth without inhibiting the mycelia)

    I was shopping for figs, I found one with a broken branch so being frugal I grabbed it and stuck it in my pocket. Not sure it will take since it is a new branch. I see the tops are growing in a tent hope it works but I am not very sure it will work...... Great video.... P.S. what are you going to do with all those trees if they all take? :)

      i keep 2 sell/trade whatever is extra. The plan is to grow one in ground and save one for a pot protected in the winter.

    Dear Ben, nowadays rooting is done by airlayering, many examples are in youtube, cut the bark of a fig tree already giving fruits about 6-10-cm and scratch the cambium of any fruit tree, then tie a plastic bag with soil in it around where the skin is off, 2-3-weeks you will see the roots in the soil fastened around the stem (stems), then cut the stem below the rooted area and plant it, the first spring the piping will give fruit. Good-luck, Changiz.

    i had a 5 gallon jar with a lid, i put a fig whole into it, and months later i pulled 10 fig saplings over a foot tall out of it. i did NONE of this work. zone 9

    • @chrischambless
      @chrischambless 6 лет назад +1

      Daniel Cornel but when you grow from a seed instead of a cutting, you get a tree that is genetically different from the parent, usually inferior. You can’t call it the same species. Each one of your 10 saplings is a NEW variety, not the tried and true one that produced the fig you started with. Get it?

    • @gavinistheawesomest
      @gavinistheawesomest 6 лет назад +2

      Daniel Cornel yeah, plus when you use a cutting from a mature tree that is already producing, you usually get fruit from that cutting the same year.

    Hey Ben! Love the Video and I plan on doing this soon. In your video it says "Frown Upside down" Does that mean you plant the frown down..into the soil? Or should the smile be the direction you plant up? Thanks!

    • @benbseattle
      @benbseattle  7 лет назад

      Hi Garret you may want to try the fig pop method instead, it by far is the most reliable and doesnt require a humidity bin to do. Plant it as a smile to keep the cutting up right

    So...where did you get the original cuttings you began with? A tree you already own? Purchase from a nursery? Or online? A neighbors yard? I'm asking because I ADORE figs (I adore growing anything who am I kidding), and I'm a 2 year transplant to the Tacoma area and have found LITERALLY 2 nursery sites within about a 25 mile radius. I'm shocked and surprised there are so few of them and I cannot seem to find people that want to share. I'm willing to purchase but I'd like to actually buy locally rather than online, which seems to be my only option at this point to score anything 'unusual'...you know, not a green bean. I've gone to and posted on Freecycle, Craigs List and approached several employees and customers at farmers type markets. No one wants to share. Not even information or sources/suppliers. This is my first of your videos and I dig them already, mainly as you are so close to me and I'm thinking I can get great tips from you as the last 30 years of my growing experience have taken place in the Las Vegas desert and the 5 before that in the Rocky Mountains of Montana....radically different environments than here, so I'm still re-learning how to apply my knowledge to this wet and sunless place. I just want to start some trees man. Food bearing trees. I get that they'll take a few years to begin production, I'm ok with that, i live in an apartment that doesnt' let me have plants outside but am on the hunt for someplace new, i'm willing to tote a few saplings around with me a couple years, but I need to find cuttings. I ask as like with any gardener, free is awesome particularly when you go overboard like me.....and apparently you. Thanks for the video, I'm going to go watch more now!
