I explained why hunting lions is a bad idea because when you kill a male lion . You leave a pride unprotected and open to attack from other lions. Killing a male lion you could be killing 5-20 lions (cubs & lionesses ) just by killing the male.
It's not like a buck or gobbler, or duck , etc.

most hunters do not kill a pride lion. they hunt the bachelors lions . so you have no idea of witch you speak. and most lions that are killed in south africa are pen raised for hunting.

      Actually you are wrong.
Almost every male lion hunted is in his prime.
Just like a big buck they want the best trophy.
If hunters were only allowed to harvest a male lion that had already lost their coalition & pride . I wouldn't have a problem with that because at that point they are old and their life quality is only going to get worse.
And no true hunter would ever shoot any in a pen.

Many lions and other exotic species hunts are meticulously controlled conservation efforts to weed out imbalanced, troublesome, injured, or diseased animals from a pack to help with the ongoing development of a herd... or pride in this case. what you're referring to may be the case in poaching, but when it comes to protected species, there is a very distinct balance that needs to be carried out between the trophy and the ecological impact of the hunt.

@@DruryOutdoors That is not necessary true.
I am sure that is some situation that is true.
There have been many male lions that are on the very edge of parks where they are protected from legal hunting. But cross the street so to speak and are shot legally. A lot of them will place a dead animal on the edge of the park to draw lions out. This happens why more than most hunters want to admit. Which is technically not poaching but rides the fine line.
But like I said a lion's life is not the same as any other animal.
If you studied the life of lions and the family structure you understand what I am saying. The loss of one male can in around about way kill 5-20 lions.
Now harvesting a old lions is different, then a lion 6-12 yrs old. Once they pass that 12 age they are only going to go down hill.
