  • NDB/NPS is the barebones category of the gauntlet. The huge run-up that you use in the main category to start the gauntlet at high speeds is PROHIBITED, and so are frag boosts. Your only speedgain is raw movement skill.
    I boycotted these categories the past couple years, (because as I've said they are stupid and they suck and should not exist,) but I was inspired while watching some top runs on the leaderboard, and have spent the past few days de-rusting and grinding. (Did this at 5am EST this morning.) This was certainly the harder one of the two NPS categories. Zet is a very skilled gamer.
    Also, yeah, SURPRISE!! Double upload! Take this as an apology for me not uploading multiplayer again after I did the PvP video a little while ago. I've been sick the past week, so have definitely NOT felt like putting myself through multiplayer grinds. Not that I'd manage any good matches anyway.
    Once again, if you can think of a better way to record 36fps gameplay, feel free to let me know. As of right now, I just record at 60fps to capture 60fps input display and 36fps gameplay with dupe frames. Wish there were a better way, but alas.

    • @CashMayo
      @CashMayo  11 месяцев назад +1

      I've been quiet about disliking it, and my reasons for disliking it, since about when I started my "boycott" a couple years ago. I have a bit more free time recently, and don't have to limit what I grind for, and decided trying the NPS categories again after so long would be fun to do.
      I don't mind speaking my thoughts on NPS now that I have the record, because it will come off less like whining just because I don't have the record. I hope you like paragraphs!! :D
      -
      Once upon a time (bear with me), up until November 2018, the gauntlet had TWO (meaningful) categories: Damage Boosting; (No restrictions), and No Damage Boosting/NFB. (There was a 'No Ordnance' category, but it was removed because it was generally unliked.)
      The record for NDB for a long time just did the standard gauntlet start, (hitting the "Restart Gauntlet" button and just starting a run.) Until February of 2018 when I started using a run BEFORE the actual run to build up speed, and enter the gauntlet with more than usual. Which brought the record down a little less than two seconds, from 17.2 to 15.4.
      Then, in November of 2018, gauntlet runners of the time had a discussion with the TF2SR mods and agreed to create another category, (called "Static" at the time, but now called "No Pre-speed,") that limits the amount of speed you can start the gauntlet with, to what you can gain in that little area in front of you when you "Restart Gauntlet."
      The new "category" was added as a division of both the "Damage Boosting" and "No Damage Boosting" categories. Which totals FOUR categories: DB/PS, NBD/PS, DB/NPS, and NDB/NPS. (The list of letters may be confusing, but it isn't so bad when you learn them.)
      I liked this change at the time, because it seemed unfair that someone should have to learn and grind the double-fragboost strat for Standard, or my throwaway run strat for NFB, for a chance at the record in either category.
      And as you may or may not know, the gauntlet has a bug where if you cross the starting line with too much speed, there's a chance that the gauntlet won't trigger. The new categories helped with this issue, as now there's a category to run where you can get a top time and not have to deal with that.
      But as years passed, and I've become a more experienced and knowledgeable runner, I've changed my perspective. I no longer think that just because high-level, high-risk strategies yield faster times, that they should be secluded into their own categories.
      During the new categories discussion, one of the mods even said to me that not wanting to do certain strats doesn't hold up very well as an argument for creating new categories. And I wholly agree with that now.
      In my 15.4, I took the time to execute a new strategy that cuts a CHUNK of time off the record. And looking back, it was stupid of me to agree that they should be split because a new strategy allowed for faster times, regardless of how difficult. After all, ***time spent + harder strats = faster times.*** That's literally the basis of improvement in speedrunning!!!
      My biggest pet peeve now, (of course, aside from the fact that the NPS category exists at all,) is the way people talk about NPS in relation to PS (basically just NDB.) NPS is treated like nonsense compared to PS, when in reality they are almost exactly the same category. The only difference between them is ONE RULE that NPS has to arbitrarily exclude higher-tier runs from NPS, and make runners feel better that they're slower than the handful of people that have worked harder for high-tier NDB times.
      NPS is a pity category if there ever was one. And it's a shame that so many have grown so attached to it, because I see more value in having fewer categories cluttering the board, than I do having NPS remain. NDB runners could always just submit to NDB.
      Maybe that’s selfish? I do NOT care, because that is genuinely how I feel about NPS. If it were up to me, the NPS category wouldn’t exist anymore.
      Hope you enjoyed my story time. :)

      Any time you see me touch a wall, I'm jumping off IMMEDIATELY, which gives me the speed boost of a walljump but avoids being slowed back down to wallrun speed like you usually do when you wallrun for extended periods.
      And when my speed is slowly increasing in the air, that's because I'm airstrafing.

    Why do you play at 36FPS? Wouldn't you want higher frame rates for more responsive input?

    • @CashMayo
      @CashMayo  11 месяцев назад +1

      Crouchkicks are frame based, so lower the FPS the larger the window to get jump and crouch on the same input. 36fps is 27.78ms per frame, 144fps is 6.94ms per frame.
      There's a mod permitted to detach crouchkick dependency from framerate, but I don't use it, partly because it's window is set to only 8ms, and partly out of spite for it.

    • @IsraelWokoh
      @IsraelWokoh 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@CashMayo Could this be why I struggle on PS4 to get consistent wall kicks?
      Also, how does a crouch kick differ? Have you made a guide on all your movement tech I can watch?

    • @CashMayo
      @CashMayo  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@IsraelWokoh Crouchkicks are effectively random without CKF. Even at low FPS you can miss them with near perfect input just due to bad luck.
      I do not have a guide sadly enough, I am no good at explaining or teaching things. But if you mean how does a crouchkick differ from a wallkick, the answer is that crouchkicks are wallkicks that are done on the same frame as a crouch input, effectively giving you the speed boost for jumping off of the wall, and getting pushed off it by crouching while wallrunning. Hopefully that explains?
