Yes agreed, my 3 months old Sigma 100-400mm DG DN OS has similar softness AFTER the 1st shot in burst. The sharpest is always the 1st (talking about great sharpness), 2nd shot onwards were all softer, usable but not as sharp as the 1st, all the time. Thanks Stephan for your videos, am a subscriber and we're also in the same photography FB group too.
Professional IQ and a perfect addition to the Tamron trilogy, 17-28, 28-75 & 70-180. Have been using this lens for two weeks with an a7iii and am more than satisfied with the results. Very sharp, great compression, quick focus, tracks fast moving surfers and seagulls well and is lighter than a Tamron 70-200 G2. Picked up a Haoge Lens Collar from Amazon, $50 US. In my experience the performance of this lens is beyond hobbyist level and compliments the zoom range beyond a 70-200/70-180.

Spot on review. I have this lens and really like it. I sold my Sony 70/200 for this. The burst mode problem you report happens for me. If you bracket you’ll see it too. With faster shutter speeds it happens less. I will be contacting Sigma about it. But if you want a great reach and sharp images it worth the price.

@@JonathanAkosah The 70 200 was not the GM. I don’t regret switching to the Sigma 100 400. I contacted Sigma and they haven’t seen the problem and said to make sure the shutter speed wasn’t too low. Thanks Stefan. I bought this lens for my A7R3 having previously owned a EF version and used a MC11 adaptor and was happy with that too. This lens is even sharper than the EF version which was already great. For static subjects the autofocus is fine but I was a little underwhelmed with tracking BIF - really no better than the previous adapted version. Mine seems to do what yours does which is first shot is in focus then constantly misses the next shots in sequence - so I think there is need for a firmware fix hopefully. I may try some BIF with the IS turned off as I have seen comments in general that IS slows down focus for BIF. Despite this it's a great and practical lens and not too big for taking on hikes etc.
Is it really sharper than the EF version? I have the EF+MC-11 and wonder if the FE Version is worthy the upgrade... can you tell us more about your experience having using both?

Thanks for doing this video. I’ve had this lens for several months. I use it a lot for photographing the moon. I do own both of them, and I'd say Sigma is better for the price. I bought 70-350 in March 2020 when Sigma lens wasn't yet announced and I do think now it was a hasty decision. Sony 70-350 is lighter, smaller and it's max aperture is a little wider, but Sigma has better image quality, bokeh and colors, and those IMO are more significant advantages. 70-350 is an APS-C only lens (and I do have A7III and a6300, I can't use it with FF camera without losing image quality) + I don't think Sony will make a teleconverter specifically for this lens, when there is a chance Sigma will eventually release one for theirs. It's only an opinion, we do use both of them with different cameras with my GF when we are going for pictures of birds and animals. But If I had to choose I'd choose Sigma.
@@orlangurs thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it. I’m an APS-C shooter and I don’t think that’ll change anytime soon, if at all. Better image quality that’s a big one.
@@yellit1975 I'd say you should try both of them with your camera and decide. For an APS-C body it may seem big and bulky and therefore frustrating to use. And also an AF may be an issue: while it works quick and accurate on A7III, on a6300 it seems to be a lot slower. Not sure if it will be an issue with newer cameras.
I own the E 70-350 G (eq105 - 350) and I have used it most for wildlife (I normaly photograph landscape). I never had it on a tripod, it is much faster to point in the right direction when you handhold the camera. And with a shutterspeed of 1/1000 or fastet that's no problems. And I always use widest aperture. Corner sharpnes isn't the most important thing in wildlife photography..
@@danielfernandezlongueira9591 I own the 70-350 and have used it for 4 months. It is better than what I expected. I have never tried the Sigma 100-400. If you have plans to upgrade to full frame then buy the Sigma. On full frame an APS-C lens will give you less than half the megapixels. 10,6 on a7iii, 18,6 on a7Riii and 27 on a7Riv.
Thanks for the review. I have it and yes the second shot is about 90% of the time is soft hand held and also on a tripod. This must be an issue with the lens rather than user error after my testing. Hope there is a firmware fix which is rolled out. Will need to buy the dock though 😔more money 💵.
My go to telephoto is a "Old School" Quantaray 135-400mm used for portraits. AF is not fast enough for wildlife, but the images I get are so good and unique. Great Vid.😀👍
Man, I'm REALLY debating on this lense. For me, the price is super high. As a hobbyist, my shots don't earn me any money. I initially wanted a min. Of 500mm, with a goal of 600mm, but those are way out of my price range. But this lense looks great.
definitely considering this lens for my a7iv, fx30 (for video). great review. wondering how this lens would perform with newer cameras like a7iv, with presumably better autofocus.
I have had the lens for a few days. Unfortunately, the front lens barrel extends automatically when the lens is held down. Is that the same with your example? It's quite annoying, unfortunately. Many thanks in advance!
70-350 is a crop lens. I don't suggest buying aps-c if you're going to go full frame in the future. FF is reverse compatible with a crop, apsc lenses are not. The Sigma is a bit better built but the Sony has better AF for fast objects. Both very sharp!
@@StefanMalloch I know, I have the 70-350. I just bought an A7Rii and i still use that lens since it's the only one i have right now at those focal ranges. I was just curious how this one compares to that. Since you can put a FF camera into APS-C mode to get some extra reach.
Great review video! I've also watched the the video for the Sony 70-350mm. For someone using an A6000 looking to photograph birds, between the two, which lens would you recommend? Or is there something else to consider? Thanks in advance!
I don't shoot at telephoto focal lengths nearly often enough to justify any outlay really... So my "go to" is still an ancient Tamron A-mount 70-300 with the EA4 adapter! But anything beating that is still gonna cost me close to a grand, which makes for very expensive shots - not worth it.
Hi, I just got this lens a week ago and I am noticing that the autofocus when shooting in video mode is veeeery slow compared when shooting photos. I mainly do videos and this seems to be an issue for me. I tried it both on my a7iii and a6600 and had the same experience. Have you had similar issues? I also haven't updated the firmware of the lens from 1.0 to 2.0 since I have to ship the lens for that. Thanks!
Its definitely not made to be a video lens and I didn't shoot a lot of video with it in my time with it unfortunately. Why would you have to ship for firmware?
A diligent search will locate a fourth party version of the tripod collar for half the cost of the Sigma model. I found one on Amazon and can recommend it.
i have a sony nex-6 and just bought this lens. my camera will not recognize it. it recognizes all my other e mount lenses. am i doing something wrong or is there a problem with the lens? thanks!

Thank you for your review! It is amazing! I was wondering how much does it better with the second shot not-focused? and also - for how many shots is it out of focus before it gets back to sharpness?
Hi Stephan. In looking at your bird photos ( not on 4 k screen ) I think the Sigma bird/wildlife photos look sharper than the Sony’s 70-350 bird shots. What is your take on this ? I’m stuck between these 2 lenses paired with the Sony a6600 . What can you tell me ? Your insights are considered very valuable to me . Keep up the great work. 😊 You did tell me that the Sony lens’ AF is more reliable. Will the 6600’s IBIS work better with Sony’s OSS in the lens ? Thanks 😊. Also will the 75 mm crop advantage for the Sigma be important for birding ? Just read the other responses and it sounds like AF is a major issue on this lens. Hello Sony 70-350 ! 😅 Thanks.
I had the original full frame lens which was fantastic so having switched to Sony i was glad they made an E mount version but from what ive read and watched its not a patch on that lens ? So what do i go for i cant justify £2000 on the G master lens i only have the A6000 at the moment the 200-600mm maybe ? .Thank you for a most excellent review on this lens but now im stuck too what lens i get .
First off I have watched a lot of your.videos and greatly appreciate your opinion however, I am interested to know which settings did you use to test action shots? Several other reviews noted that the sigma did lag compared to the g Master but not by much . I recently bought the sigma 100 - 400 mm and based on set up suggestion from sports Photographers I use continuous AF with either center focus area or zone on my a6600 and I'm personally having a pretty high hit rate.
Hey have you had any improvement with that? I was going to do the same combo and have the a6400 with sigma 24-70. Shooting with both for sports. Please respond as soon as you can.
Might be a bit short. You have crop mode but there are no teleconverters available for it right not unfortunately. Consider the 200-600 to get way out there, or the 100-400GM + 1.4x TC for ultimate versatility.
Hi @UCX5VkhfBqnNR8EQQkY66kiw, Thank you for sharing the detail feedback, may i request to share some link of album where you use this lens with Sony A7C, I just bought an A7C and thinking of a zoom lens for birds and WL photography...
Guess I should have ignored the day1 "reviews". I've read and watched multiple reviews before ordering, yours is the first mentioning the burst issue. With OIS the 2nd shot is 100% not sharp, 3rd is usually even worse (A7C medium speed). Also happens with static subjects. Day1 reviewers probably thought its the AF and they were forbidden to talk about it. Now there are many good reviews around about a 100-400 you basically can't use in burst. Didn't expect such deceiving behavior from Sigma.
The 70-350 is a crop lens and the Sigma is FF for the record. Very close in performance. Sony will be better with fast moving AF consistency in my experience.
A nice review but I couldn’t help but notice how many times you put it down when compared to the Sony G master. Unfair comparison and a disservice to an honest review. We all know the G master is in a league of its own. No need to mention it. You should be comparing it to the Sony 70-300 g lens.
It is a good review!, you should compare a 100-400 zoom lens with a another the same NOT a 70-300 zoom lens. It is what it is " you get what you pay for" and although it is a good lens for the price still just an entry level zoom

100-400
I own the E 70-350 G (eq105 - 350) and I have used it most for wildlife (I normaly photograph landscape). I never had it on a tripod, it is much faster to point in the right direction when you handhold the camera.
And with a shutterspeed of 1/1000 or fastet that's no problems. And I always use widest aperture. Corner sharpnes isn't the most important thing in wildlife photography..
Have you tried sony 70-350 and sigma 100-400?
@@danielfernandezlongueira9591 I own the 70-350 and have used it for 4 months. It is better than what I expected. I have never tried the Sigma 100-400. If you have plans to upgrade to full frame then buy the Sigma. On full frame an APS-C lens will give you less than half the megapixels. 10,6 on a7iii, 18,6 on a7Riii and 27 on a7Riv.
How i wish someone make a DIY teleconverters assembly to pair with this lens
Thanks for the review. I have it and yes the second shot is about 90% of the time is soft hand held and also on a tripod.
This must be an issue with the lens rather than user error after my testing.
Hope there is a firmware fix which is rolled out. Will need to buy the dock though 😔more money 💵.
Thanks for letting me know
There is a firmware update for this lens addressing stabilisation. Worth seeing if it helps as it may affect sharpness.
Even though not exactly the same focal range, would be keen to see the comparison with the Tamron 70-300
The Tamron is much smaller and half the weight. So if you don't need 400mm buy the Tamron.
For wildlife is even 400mm often a bit to short.
@@TVe200 makes sense. I am also interested in the image quality comparison
definitely considering this lens for my a7iv, fx30 (for video). great review. wondering how this lens would perform with newer cameras like a7iv, with presumably better autofocus.
Hi Steve, thanks for reaching out.
I have had the lens for a few days. Unfortunately, the front lens barrel extends automatically when the lens is held down. Is that the same with your example? It's quite annoying, unfortunately. Many thanks in advance!
Which firmware did you have on this lens? I belive ver 3 is out with improvement in autofocus speed
when will come out this lens converter x2 for sony e mount ???
For APS-C users or those thinking into getting into FF, how does this stack up against the 70-350?
would love to see this one
Me too. Im hesitating among these two lenses.
@@StefanMalloch what would you say about image quality? Similar or sigma is a bit better?
I love this kind of review , I'm gonna subscribe bro..
Waiting for more reviews
Great Review. Very informative Thank You
Great review video! I've also watched the the video for the Sony 70-350mm. For someone using an A6000 looking to photograph birds, between the two, which lens would you recommend? Or is there something else to consider? Thanks in advance!
heard that the oss of this lens disables the sony ibis, correct?
Great video! thanks for the effort you put into this! I'd buy it if I still had mony left after buying my first proper camera just a moth ago 😅
Thanks! This one took a while! 👊
i think this is the greatest deal for e mount tele lens..
Great review looking to get a telephoto lens thank you for reviewing this lens i just gotta save up to get it but I think ima try to get this lens
Thank you for the review
How much more compact/lighter is it than the GM? Great video, love the new format :)
Not much. Comparison coming up!
Nice to see you creat all those informative video. Wondering can I add teleconverter to this lens. If so what's it would be.
wow its an amazing lens bro..I love it
Is this les suitable for nikon D90
I just bought one today, when it comes in, I'll let you know what I think.
Hey Slink, can you say if this lens works with the Sony Teleconverters? Thanks
Update?
How would you compare it to the adapted Sigma 150-600?
Different universe. Adapted lenses will always struggle vs native.
A diligent search will locate a fourth party version of the tripod collar for half the cost of the Sigma model. I found one on Amazon and can recommend it.
i have a sony nex-6 and just bought this lens. my camera will not recognize it. it recognizes all my other e mount lenses. am i doing something wrong or is there a problem with the lens? thanks!
Fantastic review thanks for the effort
Do you advice the canon version of this lense on the canon90d. In other words, is the image quality of the e mount same as 2017 released canon version
Different lens entirely. I have not used the Canon version unfortunately
Stephan....budget conscious...planning trip to Galapagos....Sony 70-350 or sigma 100-400.?....likely shooting at 350 or 400 most of the time.... thanks
The Sony's AF is more reliable but you'll probably be wanting as much reach as possible. Can't really go wrong with either. 👊
Hello there can you explain little more the Focus limiter switch please. I want to get the lens mainly for sports. Football soccer basketball? Can you explain me the focus límete little more
Thanks
😅 Thanks.
Just picked this up for $750 new!
Thanks I buy it
That moment you want information about this lens but have to scroll through 10000 overwatch video's when searching "Sigma" XD
What I need to be if I want to use in Sony A6600?
That Sigma or Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD?
Looks nice, good for surf vids?
Might be a bit short. You have crop mode but there are no teleconverters available for it right not unfortunately. Consider the 200-600 to get way out there, or the 100-400GM + 1.4x TC for ultimate versatility.
@@StefanMalloch Ok, thanks for the feedback. 👍🏽
Dose this lens work with the Sony Tele Converters?
No.
1.5x crop mode.
Using an old push pull tamron 200 to 400 f 5.6 with laea4.
Apsc set up : 55-210 with an Olympus Tcon17x (1.7 front screw on telecon).
nice!
Hi @UCX5VkhfBqnNR8EQQkY66kiw, Thank you for sharing the detail feedback, may i request to share some link of album where you use this lens with Sony A7C, I just bought an A7C and thinking of a zoom lens for birds and WL photography...
I don't think there's a usb dock for e mount. At least not yet
Sharpness is way more important than autofocus !!!
How so? You can easily sharpen and image but you can't recover missed focus.
Unfortunately. Kind of defeats the purpose of a wildlife lens.
Ok, now confusion . E 70-350 is is the same price range. Hmz... compare please 😂
The 70-350 is a crop lens and the Sigma is FF for the record. Very close in performance. Sony will be better with fast moving AF consistency in my experience.
@@StefanMalloch
Just now checked that was the same question ;)
But if we go to 6000 series, so Sony has focus , sigma extra Zoom due crop ;) thx
1st. Maybe ?
Its the effort that counts.
No portraitures and yes it is sharp enough for pro work. I strongly disagree with you there.
Sharpness isn't contested. Its the AF that falls short. For a birding and sports, I don't recommend it. A great versatile budget shooter for sure.
Hmm zoom
I have 3 of my friends with professional cameras and lenses and they produce worst images than my phone ,so it's not up to the gear as always , cheers ☺️
save the money and buy the sony 100-400 the sigma sucks with poor autofocus and only 50% keepers
