I’m a Navy veteran, I was married to a Marine when I was active duty. I’ll tell you what bad asses they really are, omg. I thought my boot camp was hard, it was nothing compared to Marine Corps boot. They’re very tough and elite, in my opinion no other branch can compare. This is a very brilliant movie, I absolutely love it. Another great reaction!!
Interesting trivia: The helicopter gunner (Tim Colceri) was originally cast as the drill instructor with former Marine drill instructor R. Lee Ermey hired to teach him how to act like one. However, Kubrick was so impressed with Ermey's authenticity that he recast the role. The right choice for sure.
My father was a Marine. He served in Da Nang. Unfortunately he passed away before this movie came out. His favorite was Apocalypse Now. Drove my mom nuts
R Lee Ermey who plays the Drill Instructor played a similar character a decade earlier in a great underrated Vietnam movie called The Boys in Company C. Check it out if you can, it’s awesome.👍
You know what’s surprising, that the actor Pyle is also now the Kingpin for the MCU. He’s handled both Daredevil and Punisher, now he’s going be soon fighting Spider Man.
I think the marine base was actually filmed at an RAF base in the UK, and all the Vietnam sequences were either just outside London or in the docklands of London…it’s why the chopper shown was a British Sea-king as well., the US did not want to fund or offer vehicles for this, and Kubrick wouldn’t leave the UK for location shoots. Pyle I think was meant to represent a draft programme that was implemented where people with sub 80 IQ’s and sever learning difficulties were pushed through boot camp, when they clearly were not suitable to be soldiers. The smiling poster face, it’s from a toothpaste commercial, so Kubrick used it as a metaphor for the hearts and minds propaganda that joker was meant to be writing about (his officer at the newspaper makes some mentions of handing out stuff like toothpaste to the locals to win them over). The whole patrol sequence kinda follows what the newspaper wanted to cover…with a dark spin
For me this movie has two separate parts, almost as if they were two different movies, the military training and the war, and the first part is a masterpiece.
One of the very interesting things that is unsaid about this film is the way it portrays a very real program that the US Military ran from 1966 to 1971 called Project 100,000...Private Pyle is clearly meant to represent it, though Kubrick and D'Onofrio have never specifically stated that, as far as I can find. As more and more US troops were sent to Vietnam, the DoD calculated that they would not have enough to both escalate the war and meet their needs elsewhere. So Project 100,000 was initiated to see if the normal standards for IQ and physical/mental fitness to be inducted into the US Military could be broadened at all...to see if people who did not meet the old standards could still be turned into useful soldiers/sailors/airmen/Marines etc....the program was variously nicknamed "McNamara's Folly" "McNamara's Morons" and "McNamara's Misfits." 🖖💯✌
Great reaction, and hell yes this is a great dark masterpiece! I agree. I remember seeing it when it first came out and being 100% obsessed. Man, I wish that Kubrick was still around making these incredible films!
I met Gunny about 15 yrs ago, he couldn't have been more humble and kind to my wife and I. He was more interested in my service than talking about his. RIP Gunny
I love watching the first half of this with people to see how they judge the ‘blanket party’ scene. Yes, it’s cruel to beat Private Piles, but he is training for war and will most certainly die horribly if he doesn’t get his ish together. He never should have been in boot camp in the first place, but during a time of war it’s unlikely that he would simply washout for being mentally slow. His final moment in the barracks head was just what would have happened eventually by someone else’s hands at war.
This movie has layers. The director,Stanly Kubrick was known for taking a long time to film scenes and film movies. Actor,Matthew Modine, when filming,Kubrick told the actors to stand by,which means,be ready to film scenes. So,Matthew Modine stood by for about a year and in that time,he got married and had a son.Matthew Modine talks about this in the DVD commentary.
This was a really good review. It's not common for a reviewer to even notice the camera work, lighting, shot selection...let alone appreciate it. I'm looking forward to watching more.
I never understood why my parents didn’t let me watch this movie when I was a kid since we’d watch movies like Saw, Evil dead, and other war movies like Enemy at The Gates as a family😂 when I finally watched it at 16 I realized that this movie is just WAY too depressing, I would’ve had an existential crisis half way into it😂
R Lee Ermey was a real U.S.MC. Drill Instructor. He was also in a good movie that we actually watched part of one night in boot camp called The Siege of Firebase Gloria.
Deer Hunter also feels like a two parts movie maybe more. Saw it with some buddies (standing Room only) Christmas Eve South Coast- Costa Mesa, Ca. The end of the movie not a dry eye in the house. It was 6 years after Vietnam war ended and I think maybe it was too soon. Academy award for best picture and more.
dude i grew up in fayetteville too!! that’s crazy. what are the odds i been subbed to you for a while and it blew my mind that we’re from the same place, no wonder i enjoy ur vibes so much you probably remind me of home lmao.
R Lee was the real deal. So his role came naturally. I met him at a car show and waited many hours to have him sign his autograph. The line was epic and he talked to everyone. My friend was marine MP and R Lee loved him. My other friends brought a box of jelly donuts and got a shot. My photo was him pretending to choke me. Only celebrity I give a damn about. RiP
I've also always wondered who that picture was of in the war scenes on the building. And scrolling through the comments to find out that doesn't look like anybody knows
Yeah, I love the first half of this film because it is the most genuine and accurate depiction of Marine Boot Camp. I just can't watch the second half because it is TOO accurate. The sniper scene and the IED scene are the two scenes that get to me a bit too much because that was literally the Battle of Fallujah for all of us old Marines lol. One day I lost 4 brothers, the first two to an IED and then the other two to a Sniper, who happened to be a very young boy. Won't be able to watch the second half of the film whicha, but you can have this subscribe that I got heading your way man.
Good work my man. I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1988, one year after Full Metal Jacket came out. I did not watch the movie then, but my recruiter told me a bunch of guys he had ready to enlist backed out after seeing the movie.
Thanks to your uncles for their service - and yeah Full Metal Jacket is an amazing, disturbing movie Thought by many to be a comedy because most people know FMJ from youtube videos of the very first scenes
I'm a new subscriber working my way through your catalogue. Just wanted to say how much I love your passion for movies and directors, just like you showed in the intro. 👍
“The themes of duality were reflected in the characters of Private Gomer Pyle and Animal Mother, who is like a darker, more hardcore version of Pyle in the end.”- 44excalibur
Unc looking like Keith David from Platoon!! "I'd be offended but everyone getting a boot in the ass!"!!🤣😂🤣 Private Pyle smirking had me 💀. Reaction 😂 🍻💯💪🔥 as always!
Did my basic training in 1989 and this is the most realistic portrayal of what it was like. Luckily, didn't get deployed to Iraq so can't comment on the battle scenes.
There are certain similarities between the outcome for Alex from Clockwork Orange and Private Pyle, although they have completely different characters.
Hey, can I be the first to point out how fucking fantastic the score is for this film, particularly that griding mechanical nightmarish piece that plays predominantly during the scene where they search out the sniper in the building. Otherwise, what can I possibly add? Its Kubrick, man. The GOAT. The man covered so many genres - satire, horror, sci-fi, period drama, you name it. This was the only subject he really did twice. Anti-war. As is Paths of Glory. Critics didnt give FMJ much love back in the day. I think it was from a near-decade overabundance of Vietman War movies, culminating in a masterpiece like Platoon that had just come out the year before this. This movie confirmed for the 10-year-old me - "Military? Nah...no thanks."
@Popcorn Reactions You know this was a well-received movie. An Oscar winner, by the very fact that the black guy wasn't snuffed out in the beginning. That's why flicks like slasher films, always got demolished by Siskel and Ebert. lol
Ha! The drill seargeant doesn't leave much room for a reactor like you to get a word in during that first scene! LOL. Really cool reaction! To be honest, I only really like the boot camp sequence, and a few other scenes, I always call the boot camp section Stanley's last great movie, lol. I feel like "Platoon", "Deer Hunter" and "Apocalypse Now" did the actual Vietnam stuff better. ("Full Metal Jacket" was filmed in England, the others were filmed on actual locations in the Philipines and Thailand, which makes a difference in my opinion. "Full Metal Jacket"'s Vietnam stuff seems a little cold and clinical) "Paths Of Glory", his second great movie, is his - or anybody else's - best war movie! Definitely check that out one day, on or off the channel!
True his job is to get up everyones ass and too see who breaks. You cannot have anyone in war time who is going to break, that gets others killed. The actor who played the drill srg, was an actual drill Sg.

I went through USMC 3rd Battalion Parris Island Bootcamp and let me tell you it was way worst than this ! They have to break you down to rebuild you stronger if you survive that is ! Now due to watch happened in the Gulf War and Somalia, my brainmeats are ALL screwed up and I have to focus on cooking and the Peanut Gallery to keep me level, if you can call it that. Although, I am messed up mentally for life, I wouldn't change it for the world. I'd do it all again, without skipping a beat 💪🏽🍻 Mama Shra keeps trying to put a bell on me just because I just randomly appear around her, scaring the crap out of her... she needs to pay more attention to her surroundings !
I tried to watch this when I was kid, but due to all of the cussing 🤬 I wasn’t able to see it in theater’s, but it was good. 👍 The damn drill sergeant was no joke.

It's for the movie but Kubrick went overboard with excessive bloodletting.
Right, it was against the law and any use of racial slurs was strictly forbidden. you are the first commenter to note Hardmans' sadism, he brutalized an unqualified recruit with intense mental and physical abuse and drove Pyle to psychosis, murder, and suicide. I'm a Vietnam veteran and this film has a very artificial quality, most of the Marines here are portrayed as immature, and there is no real "message" in the combat scenes. I think he was even better and more realistic (and I don't know how he did it any better than in this movie) in The Boys in Company C.
also Seige of Firebase Gloria
Ermey was actually a drill instructor during his military service which is why they picked him for the role.
He also played the same roll for years... as a drill instructor
I wish more people would react to The Boys in Company C. It was great.
You know what’s surprising, that the actor Pyle is also now the Kingpin for the MCU. He’s handled both Daredevil and Punisher, now he’s going be soon fighting Spider Man.

Such a classic. You can analyze this film in several different ways.

You're right, filmed completely in England. The second half of the movie was filmed in a disused gasworks.
I LOVE R. Lee. Rest in piece - drill sgt

BOTH sides were so ruthless in that war. Can you imagine the mind f*ck hearing an advancing army singing Mickey Mouse?
No, I can't, it was their comment on the war, but it didn't come across that way,
