"Japanese people are so welcoming of individuality and not conforming to what everybody else is wearing." no girl they're just too polite to give you looks, they judge you but they mind they're business about it
DarkScarlatti Furthermore, that's because of their core culture "和(wa)". It means "keeping the harmony among the people". Those who spoil it (for example to do something strange) are regarded as crazy or a troublemaker, so Japanese people tend to avoid to concern them: not attack them but just only ignore it. Some people mistake it as Japanese people welcome strange things just because they don't deny them, but in fact, they just only don't want to cause a trouble due to concerning them. Those who live in Japanese society and are deeply involved with Japanese people can notice it easily, but it is very hard for tourists to notice it.
@@denischadima1175 That's awesome, thanks for the insight. I wish western cultures had that mentality. I think people usually feel entitled with their "freedom of speech" and forget what it is to live in a respectful/harmonious society. Especially when that freedom of speech does absolutely nothing but make people feel bad about themselves. For example saying "you look ridiculous with those clothes!"... sure that's your right to express your thoughts, but that doesn't have any positive outcome to your environment at all. I agree there should be freedom of speech when something wrong is happening and you must speak up, but the key is balance imo.
Maybe some will judge it but, Lolita fashion is big in japan, people in Harajuku and Akihabara find it really cool. So I think thats what she was talking about.
Biggest culture shock I experienced in Tokyo was the sheer amount of people. I’d never seen so many people in my life. Also how polite and friendly people are. How much standing in line for things and how fast and efficient service is. Weirdest thing was seeing people going to a music festival at the Tokyo Dome all dressed in certain colours for certain bands/singers like they were going to go follow a football or Baseball team. As well as seeing people cosplaying Anime and even wrestlers.
"Japanese people are so welcoming of individuality and not conforming to what everybody else is wearing." LOL, no girl! It's the opposite. Maybe in Tokyo it's more acceptable cuz you got some fashion culture out there, but take the train out to the suburbs. People look at you like you're crazy, unless you're dressed head to toe in Uniqlo.

However, there are also tons of super expensive places, too, if you want to look at it. But, the girl thinking that Japanese people are "welcoming of individuality" is totally mistaken. It is an incredibly conformist society. Good to know! Here in Chile there was a terrotist attack in the subway too, it happened few years ago. They put bombs in the trashcans and no one noticed... Now every trashcan is like a plastic bag and its holder so we can see what's inside of it.
3:02 I was in Tokyo in the 1990s and there were garbage cans (rubbish bins) all over the place, including on the streets and in train stations. In 1995, the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo did a Sarin attack in the Japanese subway system. Shortly after that, some [possibly] Aum members and/or some copycats started putting dangerous things in the "rubbish bins" in train stations. Because of that, they got rid of all of the bins, apologized for the inconvenience, and said they would replace them some time in the future. I think they just got so used to it that they decided not to put them back.
My first trip to Tokyo my dad and I was looking for this special store and we looked around super confused by the subway station. This random man on a bike asked if we needed help, we showed him the store name and adress and he was like: oh yea, follow me! We assumed he was going in the same direction so we followed him on foot, him on his bike for like three blocks. Finally we came to the store, thanked him so much for the help and then.... he TURNS AROUND AND BIKES ALL THE WAY BACK. He wasn't going in that direction at all, he just helped us to get where we were going despite not having anything there to do. We'd never do that in Sweden. We'd just point in some direction and hope it works out 😅👍🏼 what's even more interesting about this "helpfulness" is that most japanese people aren'r very good at english but still try to help and go out of there way to help you. Love Japan, hopefully one day I'll move there!
I'm not sure but probably the ramen shop that he mentioned at 2:40 was KIKANBO(鬼金棒) in Ikebukuro, not Nakamoto because it is famous for the spiciest ramen in Tokyo (and is also located in Kanda). I like it and hope you try one, you can choose the level of spicy and sichuan pepper.

It's the same situation in Iceland regarding Über , taxis are ridiculously expensive.
What island country has geothermal springs, a difficult language and expensive taxis? Oh, there are now two of them.
I am a man from Algeria I want friends from Japan I love the people of Japan and I love Japan😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
10:38 I finally heard Cathy's real accent.
