As someone who has taught thousands of Japanese English learners and helped them become global citizens by helping them make the world their classroom, I can totally relate to the power of HUGS being one of the most important languages one can learn.
Culture and society play a huge role, so in order for children to make hugging a habit, parents and educators should lead by example.

Very great speech and a very important topic that is discussed here. I wish more people in Japan would allow physical closeness and thus be able to support important people in life when they need it. I hope that many people in Japan can see this video and think about how a simple hug can go a long way in supporting people also mentally.

A beautiful and so very true Ted talk. I and my two brothers grew up in a single parent environment. Our mother showed her love through providing for us, and being there for us. She didn't express her love through touch or verbal expressions, probably from not having that in her childhood. Sometime in my teens I decided that if I were to ever be a parent I would break that mold, and that I would hug my children, and tell them I love them, along with providing, and being there for them always. My sons are 49, and 51 now, and the hugs, and "I love you's" continue to this day.
