For anyone having a problem pushing the tabs on the bottom adjuster to remove, I’ve got a super simple fix. Use a 14mm socket and push it over the plastic adjuster. It will push the two tabs in and allow you to pull the assembly right out.
+@k96502 Thanks for the feedback!
thank you for this comment
Thanks for the video it was great and really helped. one tip I would add is when trying to pinch the clip in the back rear assembly. I could not pinch the clips in order to remove the clip. I used a 10 mm socket which fit snugly over the clip assembly. By rocking the socket from side to side I was able to release the tabs to remove the headlight assembly.
+Daniel Richards Thanks for watching. We carry the replacement headlights shown in this video on our website. We also offer free shipping on all orders in the lower 48 states. Here's a link to the headlights shown in this video, if anyone needs to replace theirs. www.1aauto.com/ford-headlight-pair/i/1alhp00274?RUclips&CTA%20Comment&ATony
I wish I read this comment before taking on those rear clips. I have lost all religion and threw the old headlights in the woods after skinning my knuckles up.
thanks, i couldn't get my finger on one side of the clip to press it in to release
I used your idea but it took a 14 mm for mine to slide over snugly but still didn't get. Finally just screwed out the adjuster.
If you're replacing the whole assembly like in the video, keep in mind that the tabs can be destroyed. I used a wood chisel and hammer to just cut them off. (It did require removing the battery on each side, and the case on one, but it was about the only way I could proceed since none of the other tricks worked for me.) Thanks so much for this video. I didn't even know where to start!
+Dan West Thank you for watching. We appreciate you providing how you performed the replacement, and are glad to know our videos were of assistance! 1aauto.com
Rather, use the old horizontal and vertical adjustments on your truck and remove the new controls from the new headlights. Takes a "TON" of work and works great. And, you only have to remove ONE clip. Just did mine and was a game changer. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for the informative video. Identifying the connection points and locks was very helpful. I trouble getting my fingers on the lock tabs so I slid a short 1/2" PVC pipe nipple about over the adjustment body. The inside diameter fits snugly and compresses the locking tabs as you slide it on. Once in position, the light pops out easily.
Great video. I wouldn't put the old headlights on that aren't clear on a newer truck. Those headlights stopped production in 2002. 2003 - 2004 use a clear housing. More clarity when lights are on.
😆 u cut away from the only part I needed to see after finally finding a. video. My clips are rusted but don't know how to take them off. As I went back & finished watching learned what I needed to know. 2 clips were missing & mounts were busted. Was worried I might break something but was already broke. Hello new headlights. U guys are awesome. Thank you very much.
I swear every vehicle I purchase, you guys have maintenance videos on them. I love you.
Great video, will be switching out my dads headlights to his 2000 foes excursion. Thank you
Hi Mike,
Thank you very much for these videos, it really is thoughtful and professional of you to take the time to film and post these! Although I knew it was an easy replacement process, just watching your video have me a mental guide to reflect upon! Again, thank you and your team... Happy holidays!!
Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
My God were those bottom clips hard to get off the old assembly! I have some of the bloodiest knuckles around, and after an hour and a half, done! I tried the 10 mm socket that Daniel Richards suggested, mine were much bigger. Naveen Narayan had a good idea, and it did make it easier, but still a PITA. Also, I tried to bust the clips off as PJS said, but couldn't get to the outside clip.
I will say that the new assembly went on like a charm. Now just need to aim the headlights (since I loosened the bottom clips to the point of coming apart, I couldn't measure the length of the screw as mentioned in the video).
This video, and the parts are excellent, and packed well. One thing that is important is that you should compare the adjuster screws and make sure they are the same length as with the original headlights- as shipped, the adjusters are run all the way out, and you can't grab the screw to to adjust (as the plastic adjuster nut is out further than the screw, and the screw turns with the nut) after you install the headlights. I had to pull them back out, and those tabs are in a terrible spot to try and pinch. the socket trick to pinch or pvc pipe did not work for me as the aged plastic is too stiff. I had to cut the originals with a long chisel. Fortunately a good tug separates the ball head screw from the socket on the new ones so I didn't ruin the new lights. I wrench a great deal, but this was a formidable, frustrating, and humbling job. At least the outcome carries a great deal of joy, because the difference is so noticeable.
90° angled snap ring pliers work great.
Found out best way to remove was to remove both clips drivers side then to turn adjustment screw until released from holder then remove headlight. Once light was removed it was way easier to press the two plastic pieces together,
A easy way to take care of the bottom adjuster that clips in (the one almost impossible to get loose) is just use the adjuster screw to screw it completely out and leave the original adjuster in. Remove the new adjuster from your new light. Then just put the new screw on the light into the old adjuster. Took about 5 minutes to change the second one and never cussed once.
+phil k Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com
That was a good tip. Tried the 14mm socket deal but didn't work but this did and was easier. Thanks. @@1AAuto
When I tried to unscrew that long screw, it just force fed out the adjusting screw and kept spinning. It is actually attached to the assembly! It is not coming out - just spins and spins endlessly...anyone have that issue?
Aggravating job. Thanks for the video, would have never gotten them out if I hadn't watched this.
+Doug Thank you!
You do A good job in explanation. Helped me out. Done!!!
FYI the stock housing & lock ring areas will not work with LEDs.. tried to install my aftermarket bulbs into the old housing it fits but it's just the lock ring thing that secures the halogen bulb in place
Assuming your new lights have the plastic wings that squeeze together so "easily", just bust the old wings off with a screwdriver. They are a PITA to squeeze if they are old. Moxley has it right.
I also found that the metal clips are best removed by "semi-permanently" bending them away from their slots so they cant reach the slots and then lifting them out. They can be easily re-shapened for use with the new lights so that they can reach the slots. I also recommend using silicone spray on everything that needs to slide into place; the metal clips, the plastic wings, the wiring plug at the back of the light itself.
Ford sure didn't do us any favors with trying to get these out. Thanks for posting this video it saved a lot of aggravation.

I bought a truck that had front end damage. I've replaced the headlight mounting panel and I have the new headlights. Where can I find those mounting clips?
Thanks for the advice on those clips. I would have never figured that out!
Thank you for watching!

Mike - Thanks for the video and yes I did buy the F250 headlights. Joined your website too.
This helped tremendously!
I have a big gap between the side of my corner piece and the actual headlight. Do you know how I could fix that?
Great Video, very detailed so I don't screw up my truck lights. Thx....

I found drivers side hard to remove bottom squeeze clip so better if you turn adjustment screw until not connected to holding clip then remove headlamp then squeeze the clips gives more room to work. Out of the box great product very little to adjust before installation.
I need the white piece at 3:10 that the clip mounts onto. It's missing from one of my lights but I can't find what it is called.
Nice you show hot to do the easy replacement bulb.
I replaced my original housing without ever watching a video, fortunately I was able to fumble my way through the disassembly. But once I had lights adjusted I realized that the light housings themselves were not evenly in place, it wasn't an issue til I started pulling a travel trailer, now I had to disassemble the whole mess again and because of a TBI in Iraq my memory doesn't work like it used to, I played with those darned clips for about 45 minutes before I decided to live them up, wait a couple minutes, then just jerk them straight up with pliers, worked great.
Now my question is this? How do I measure the correct distance on the adjustment screws for the initial install? It's been 3 years since I changed them and I don't have the old lights, any suggestions?
At night, pull up to a wall or fence (something with full slats, not chain-link). GO gently until your front end touches, then get out and mark the position on the wall/fence where your headlights are. Make sure the parking lot or whatever you're on is flat. Now, pull 25' away from the wall. Turn on your headlights (low beam) and adjust them so that the beams are touching the spots you marked on the wall/fence.
What socket do I need to remove the headlight assembly? The four screws are somewhere between 3/16 and 1/4 inch and between 5 mm and 6 mm.
Chuck Sleep 5.5 mm
You are the MAN..!!! thanks 'saved me lots of time....and busted knuckles...lol
No problem. Glad to hear it helped you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Can the plastic locking connector to the rear headlight assembly be replaced?
Mine broke on last headlight bulb replacement and I would hate to lose
light due to a loose connection.
You might be able to purchase one from the dealer. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Why did you show the easy side...? I have a 2001 F250 SD 7.3 and the battery and the casing has to come out on the driver's side to get it out. :-)
Turn the ring counterclockwise, and then how do you get the freaking housing out?
Love the videos
are those the factory side steps or are those your product
my problem i 've got is my lights are out of adjustment wish you would showed that step
+bishdavid99 Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Does your replacement head lights come with those clips? Or does anyone know here to get them?
+Josh Roberson If you just need the clips, the dealer might have them for you. 1aauto.com
Yeah.. the little "wings" were not cooperating. very old and hard. They would not depress inward so I used a screw driver to break them off to get old light out.
There shouldn't be, it should be the same procedure as the passenger side. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Thanks bro you really help me out
How do I get the headlight assembly out of the truck
I'm having trouble with aiming and adjusting them
I can see I'm gonna have to get some clips before I start on my truck.
+Ken Davis Thanks for watching. Some new clips are required upon replacement due to the age and them not being touched for a long time. I never noticed how much i hated my truck until now
Awesome thank you
+jamie zeiler Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Good video, but the driver side is a bit harder. Tighter space.
Where are the headlight adjusters on an Excursion ?
+Harley Anderson These adjusters should be on the back of the headlight assembly.
Cannot find anyone doing videos on driver’s side. Much harder to do over there.
+Coach Wilson We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. Buy this part for your vehicle on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
How did you aim it correctly
+Christopher Jones Headlight assemblies have adjuster screws on the back to adjust their aim. 1aauto.com
@@1AAuto I adjusted them the same but one is pointing down and the other one is perfect
Should have shown the driver side as that's the one most people will have problems when changing just the bulb.
why why WHY????? This should b e a simple procedure. I just purchased a 2002 F-250 and need to change these out. I also have a Chevy Malibu that I can take and change out BOTH assemblies in the time it takes to get two of the three clips out on just ONE of these assemblies on this F-250. Another one of Fords "better ideas" The people who design these cars and trucks NEVER think about the ones who have to work on them even their own mechanics !!!!!!!!
They want people (like me) to have it done at the stealership
The driver side is much more difficult....almost no space....is there another smaller clip in the bottom like on the passenger side??
They're not a product that we sell. We do sell the headlights used in the video on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
NOT EVEN CLOSE to my 03 350 super duty 6 screws to pull the trim then 4 holding the light in place. Not 1 clip
thanks for the video!
Didn’t help at all I can’t figure out how to unscrew the headlights so they can pop out
The passenger side right clip closest to the engine was a pain. I flattened the top of the clip somewhat which then gave me the ability to get to the locking clips and pop them out. I put the light in to test fit and the outside top doesn't go far enough in to see the clip point. AND. I can't take the light back out as the bottom clip has popped in place! Why did they recess the phillips so you need a 90% screwdriver? Ford dealer always closed when I'm off work so I went to auto zone and got clips that looked right. Of course they don't fit. Why didn't the stupid light assembly come with clips OMG. What an awful DIY project.
not a clear picture of clips. to remove
My 2004 f250 headlight doesn't even look this.
Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Don't even show you removing the eclipse
+gypsy sonny denali tx Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Thank you for your order. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
E eagle eyes supposedly better be able to see
This is ridiculous. My GMT800 takes under 30 seconds.. literally
Useless for me. Left headlight is much different
+D. Oooh Deardorff Thanks for checking us out!
Terrible video doesn’t even show how to take off the headlight it just skips to him removing the bulb which was the easiest part
Once again Ford fails to engineer anything easy
This is why i hate ford
