I am Howard Carroll, guitarist for the Dixie Hummingbirds. I am 93 years old and played guitar professionally for 70 years. My friends call me the Father of Gospel guitar. I don't know about that, but I was one of the first to bring guitar to gospel music. I am in a nursing home now and can no longer travel, but I want to thank you for taking me to Segou, Mali. I come from a musical family, and we can trace back to the slave holder, Charles Carroll, and his plantation in Maryland. The plantation buried our history alive. Took away our name, took away our language, took away our religion, but they did not take away our spirit or our music. Over a hundred years ago my father played banjo, guitar, mandolin and others. He taught me to play when I was 5 years old. My father had a finger style on the banjo not unlike Mali musicians playing the Mali banjo, the n'goni. I believe our family came from Mali and were musicians. Thank you for taking me home after 300 years away.

It's the way he tries to confirm each statement made by the guide with the ok's, the yeah yeahs, the huh huh etc. It's annoying and cuts into the general flow of the guide's conversation. I sorta remember the tour guide saying that in some seasons they do a sort of maintenance on their building to waterproof it and such.
I also notice that the people use materials native to their land. And mud being plentiful, they use it maybe also suitable for comfortable living conditions.
Europeans say mud huts offensively but now i see it is use because its feasible to the climate and or easily acquired.

Islam spread peacefully into west Africa, many members of the royal families, noblemen and merchants converted to Islam. Later there were some more violent jihads like in the 11th century from the Almoravids and of course the later Fulani Jihads which I think he's speaking about when he mentions 1862.

You don't need any stomach protection for as long as the food is well prepared and fresh. Maybe you may experience stomach upset to some kind of food just like fresh milk does when long time passes without you taking it because your digestive system isn't used to it. Just like if you consume too much cheese you may experience stomach upsets it is exactly what happens when you eat certain food in Africa.

Olamilekan Adegoke When they say they are "white" from my understanding they are speaking more along the line of their status in society also those who were considered Muslim had something to do with having "white" status or free status...White being at the top irregardless of skin color...someone who is considered black was synonymous with slave or someone who had there heritage stripped away is considered black. Almost like black is synonymous with unknown origin or slave origin this also translates to black being synonymous with criminal. This is why ethnicity and nationality seems to be so important to the world but American "blacks" ignore national origin and ethnicity.

Hey Uhuru, Can I ask for a favour. If possible can you take aerial shots of all the places you visit. So artists can you it to create mods of the ancient civilizations that could be used in animation and movies.
