    What do you do when you arrive in a foreign country with a medical emergency requiring surgery, without travel or medical insurance or a sim card? To make matters worse you're not allowed on land because of quarantine rules!
    In this episode we arrive in Martinique and face all of the above with some mechanical troubles thrown in too (as always!). Our first landfall in the Caribbean involves isolation, hospital visits, medical bills and searching for spare parts - living the dream!

    I am sitting in hospital in Portugal watching this 2 days after fracturing my hip while skateboarding in the dark beside the marina. So as my wife looks after our 2 kids on the boat I can in some ways resonate with you. I can't rewind time but I can choose how to react to the situation that I find myself in. Now I really appreciate the parts of my body that are working well.
    Best wishes for all your family adventures

    I had a chuckle when you said fingers crossed 🤭 it sounds like the youngerlings need to step up and help mum if they want to eat. It's amazing how one finger can cause so many issues. I guess that at least the bill shock wasn't to overwhelming let's hope the fingers heal fast and you can get back to enjoying your adventures, fingers splinted🏴‍☠️

    Hi guys. Irenka you are now in the pinned limb club along with Ant. Cod liver oil tablets or fish oil every day. Takes a week to take effect but reduces pain and inflammation really helps with joint and bones on the mend. Natural product that's also very good for you! Woody, now we have wifi for the winter we wanted to get on to your maintenance channel. The link in the description is not working for us. Just comes up 404 not found? We have an outhaul motor/ gearbox repair video in the can for the Amil main outhaul motor and gearbox. We helped Steve on dusk sort his and get it back working. It will be a winter video but it may be something we could collaborate on, across the pond repair or something if you have not already sorted yours. We sourced the bearings from a car parts shop and did the job very cheaply. PM us if this is something you think would be a good video. Just arrived at Finike. We love Turkey!!!! Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

      Thanks for the heads up about the link.. We’ll check it out.. sometimes YT abbreviates the link for some reason which stops it working 🤷‍♂️the channel is ruclips.net/user/MothershipMaintenance Yes I’ve got outhaul furler maintenance footage covering three continents and we had to rebuild the casing in the end which cost more than a new furler 😑 It was a nightmare job.. then the brushes disintegrated, I made new ones, they burnt out so had to import new ones because the carbon was a copper mix or something.. not standard. Anyway, just need to edit it together. Always happy to coordinate with you guys.. you know that 😉 What do you have in mind? I’ve spent the last few months re-editing and migrating old maintenance videos to the new maintenance channel so have a backlog of blogs to put together (the editing got put on hold but the maintenance certainly didn’t!). Glad you’re now in Turkey, we loved it there.. best place for getting jobs done, great value for money, great people, hard working and very friendly. Also fascinating country, would love to return one day. 👍

    In the US it costs $3,000 just to walk in to the hospital Emergency room. My Dad was airlifted to a local trauma center 20 minutes away by State Police helicopter. The cost of the helicopter flight was free, however, the cost for the 2 flight nurses provided by an outside company was twenty thousand dollars. Medicare paid all except $200.00 that my family had to pay.

    I had my ring finger broken 20 yrs ago. What I remember is the pain. Passing out particularly after the surgery. But it's not about me it's about you. I really sympathize. You need to be the new director general and get things done for you. Put your feet up & enjoy it. You need to heal. I have had many broken bones & I believe my finger was the most painful of all. And that includes a broken back.

      Yes we only have third party now as boat insurance prices have gone crazy.. when you check the small print it turns out you’re not even covered for the most likely scenarios.. or they make the conditions so evasive that you don’t know whether your complying with their requirements half the time!

    Wow, that is really good, the hospital did a great job. I had a similar break in a bone between the knuckle and the wrist and the Hospital in Australia sent me home saying that is an old break, nothing to worry about. The French are really good. My youngest daughter on a school trip to France passed out in the street in Paris due to her insulin pump overdosing with the altitude on the flight. Ambulance to hospital and an overnight stay while they watched her system stabilize, cost? €135. Supporting breaks for the full 6 weeks is vital. I took a cast off early so I could go on a date decades ago. It took the wrist half an hour to swell up and start to hurt, so the cast was back on and taped together for the rest of the time. Keep smiling, you could be in deepest darkest Britain right now and be having even worse problems.

      We’ve been really impressed with the healthcare we’ve received around the world.. from Turkey to the Caribbean.. and we’ve had our fair share of accidents! Spain was particularly good and cheap. I think in the States, prices get a little crazy though, and we wouldn’t go there without insurance.

    Wow, glad your finger is healing up well.
    We are a Digital Nomad family looking to transition to liveaboard in a few years. My big worry is always, the health insurance for worst case scenarios. We don't worry about small accidents or getting sick. But definitely being on the water with our son and needing emergency services or long stay serious hospital care. And also boat insurance for worst case scenarios would worry me.
    Have you made back up plans for such cases like insurance back in the UK should anyone need serious hospitalisation?

    • @MotherShipAdrift
      @MotherShipAdrift  2 года назад

      As we replied in a previous comment… we’ve been really impressed with the healthcare we’ve received around the world.. and we’ve had our fair share of accidents! Spain was particularly good and cheap. I think in the States, prices get a little crazy though, and we wouldn’t go there without insurance. It obviously helps when your country has reciprocal healthcare arrangements with the country your visiting. Rather than full insurance we have a lump sum put aside for boat/health emergencies. It wouldn’t cover worse case scenarios like total loss or evac for the entire family but it has covered everything we’ve faced so far.. and worked out far more cost effective than full insurance.. which has a lot of dubious small print anyway!
