I've never seen the opera or the movie and have absolutely no idea about the context except parodying officers, but I find it absolutely hilarious how the pirates seem to be both intimidated and impressed by his presence.
The movie's on RUclips, last I checked.
Me watching Pirates of Penzance at age 6: Wow this guy knows his stuff, I can't even keep up.
Me watching Pirates of Penzance at age 20: Ohohoho now I get it.
His mindset was “If I say it fast enough no one will notice”
When you’re happy, you listen to the song.
When you’re sad, you understand the lyrics.

If one wants a true appreciation for the beauty of Linda Ronstadt's voice The Pirates of Penzance delivers.
Dear George Rose, a magnificent accomplished actor who was beloved by all that knew him, came to a horrid end far from his friends and at the hands of people he meant to enrich.

I was in theater school in NYC in 1983. We watched this over and over.
A kid in my drama class had to sing this fast and i was dumbfounded behind the curtains at the public theater we preformed at. Good memories. Our music cut off halfway through a different part and we kept going.

I'm a bit shocked to see how late this movie was made. It absolutely looks like it would have been filmed in the early 60s
That's intentional. The idea was to make it look like the stage production. The original production was in the 19th Century.
Ugh the nostalgia, I remember this in three different movies.
The pirate movie was my fav
Man, I could not imagine singing that fast. Holy crap.
Let's just take a moment to appreciate the mood of the opening scene. While the pirates are all running around, preparing to do you-know-what to all the women, it's refreshing to know that the topic was taken seriously enough to present in such a cheerful fashion. Top marks, guys.

Sorry, but these aren't the right lyrics. The movie version skips the verses that start with 'I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's', 'I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies', and 'I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform'. He also repeats the last verse at the end again.
i love when the beat changes to become faster but more steady. you know some serious shit is coming
So... who else has memorized this
Working on it :P
One of my favorite songs to sing at karaoke. Never fails to get the crowd revved.
M_Stanfield5441 I did cause I played him once

Ive been working on it for the last couple of weeks and have got it down pretty well, but I wouldn't want to try and perform it in frount of a large audience. Alas, he is a betterr Major General than I!
Is this some kind of 1890s British rap-battle?
I'm concerned with twitter things.

The song we were all here for starts at 2:36
I think this is the best song in musical theater history. Still want to play this part.
I aspire to be even half as fast as this man
My daddy played the Modern Major General in his HS in 1927 - and would sing a bit of this song into his 70s!!
The Major general can be summoned with afew fast said words
I’ve got some cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse. Did you know that the square of one side of a Euclidean triangle plus the square of the other actually equals the square of the hypotenuse? And, get this, by the transitive property, the square of the hypotenuse minus the square of either side actually equals the square of the other side! Thanks Pythagoras.
And this, is where Epic Rap Battles of History began...
Quite good. But he did however not slide down a flight of stairs whilst holding a Union Jack in the most elegant and intimating entrance imaginable
VeggieTales brought me here ^-^
The Llama song brought me here... Thankfully I used it as an opportunity to learn the original...
Mental voice when looking at the Pirate King "Hmmm, a movie with a discount Kevin Kline . . .HOLY . . "
Eminem's been really quiet since this dropped
The tune /melody to this has been in my head for over a week. I'll be honest it's been pissing me off! Lol. I could not for the life of me remember a single word or clue that I could use to google it! It just came to me.... "i am a very..... something something"!! After my mother saying it was from mikado, then insisting it was hms pinafore, and those obviously yielding no results, this is so satisfying to find! What a ridiculous thing to have been weighing on my mind and bugging me for over a week lol. 😮😂
5:50 Every character in every music ever.
Loved this play and this VERSION the most.
But then I Adore Keven KLINE in this...
