You would have a heart failure on how my husband and father patched the floor in the nursery. If you would have had this posted 2 weeks ago i could have done it myself lol. I'm learning so much hopefully one day I can put all this information to work.

Just a couple of suggestions. The stripes always go on top for both subloors and roof sheathing for three reasons. The first one is the one you showed to assist with nailing. Second is the stripe side is coarse and water resistant which makes it safer to walk on. Third is that smooth side has the engineering stamp which is what the building inspector will be looking for to be sure it meets code for the span.
You also want to install it stripe side up when weather and inspections are not an issue. This is because the sheathing has a cup to it and curls up at the edge. The board is in tension when nailed down this way. It is best to nail from the center to the edge. If you nail it cup side up, the board has to be compressed and the upward tension can cause nails to pop in the middle.. At 6:39 in the video you can see a board with a cup in it that is jammed into the wall and then nailed starting from the other end and going toward the wall. As you nail it toward the wall, the cup is eliminated but the board gets longer and you may eliminate the expansion gap by the time you get to the wall. The same is true when you are butting two pieces of non tongue and groove plywood together.
The bump feature on most nail guns is a nice feature. But there is also a flat tip that is supposed to be used when nailing sheathing so you don't overdrive the nails. This is not usually an issue with a subfoor that is glued and nailed, but it is an issue with roof sheathing. When you overdrive a nail in sheathing, you reduce the holding power of the nail and your 1/2" sheathing is now 7/16" or less and you will fail roof inspections in areas that experience high wind. The claw tip is best for framining when you want to grip a stud for toe nailing and overdriving a nail doesn't matter.
And last, you should always try to butt factory edge to factory edge for the best fit. I start by measuring the room to determine if it is square and where the sheets will fall so I don't end up with a sliver on the end. I snap a chalk line on the side where I want to start. If necessary, start with a cut side against the wall and the factory edge on the chalk line. Contunue to the other side where cut ends will be against the wall.

This is genuinely fast becoming one of my favourite channels! My only (hopefully constructive) criticism would be can you slow down a bit when you’re explaining stuff? I very much doubt I’ll be laying floors anytime soon 😂 but there was one bit where I had to go back three times to understand what you were doing. It obviously all comes so naturally to you, Joel; you make it look so easy 😊

Consider straddling the joist when nailing, with one foot on each side of joist, so your weight is split among both sides. That will pull the board down on top of the joist evenly so it’s less likely to pop up.
