Really wanted to see inside some huts and a bit more of a look around!
Ah my childhood! My Dad still lives in one of the miners terraced houses above and I spent many hours on that shoreline as a nipper. Brilliant thank you!😁

Only a few mile from port mulgrave, step dad used to work on a farm at hinderwell that had land at port mulgrave

Those buildings should be protected/listed as absolutely unique before they are all buried or washed away.

My kids an me know this place well they grew up on that beach ! This is a delightful place to visit bit of a climb down ( and back up !) Which puts a lit of people off but then that means u can be there on a saturday afternoon and be the only people there great place to camp or bivi as long as you know the sea tides another great film thank u
Been down there before, but I always thought it was intruding to look at the huts, thanks for the close up!

Thanks for sharing. Brought back a lot of memories. We had two weeks in the cottage at the top of the cliff ( now private I believe) . The cliff walls are full of fossils too.

I think (and I could be wrong) I’ve been there. About 12 years ago. Steps were in use and plenty folks milling about. What a shame it’s like that now. That’s the power of the land. Nice little snippet mate. I liked the history of it. And have a good Easter 🐣 egg. 👍 🥚

It's nice to see another local of mine on here. I didn't know of the wall being destroyed by allies and don't really understand that, given the use a breakwater has against the Germans but I believe the decline of ironstone mining was also due to lesser quality, too-the best being Australian if I remember right, eighty-odd percent maybe, I don't know. I emplore you to contact Skinningrove ironstone museum who I volunteer with, they're opening a temporary museum venue in the church adjacent to the steelworks in Carlin Howe while the main buildings still being upgraded. They really know their stuff and Skinningrove was one of the most noteable areas for mining in the UK, government officials came to see due to its famous impressive reputation of the time. It started with a couple of guys who were collecting from the cliffs, spotted and questioned by the land owner who employed said opportunistic amateur miner. He became the surveyor, overseeing the mine paid by a bottle of whiskey and also stepped down in payment of two whiskeys if I remember right. Skinningrove became a huge place, so much so the Germans were employed to build the steel works at Carlin Howe, ironically who tried to destroy it as Nazis later. Side note: a parabolic concrete dish and old alum works at boulby hamlet on the hill. The steel works were to replace the need for Skinningrove jetty, also noteable, because of its successfully experimental concrete construction which became literally indestructible. Anyway, with the steel works there was no longer need for shipping ore to Geordie land for smelting, and the infamous "Zig-zag" railway and horse drawn ambulance were also locally known with their own stories-the railways danger and derailment, the ambulance having small signs like which way a person or corpse was loaded etc. An areal ropeway was built from Skinningrove valley to the steel works too. Miners went from loftus, where I am-2 miles to Skinningrove into the pitch black mines with only their barely practical lamps, and 2 miles back to work directly below where they lived. Their tools were their own and so were their powder which they bought themselves, dried if needs be, by the fire, and stored safely below their beds. The boys started work at 12 and if noone in a family worked, the mines would seize their homes back. The local cafe has named the converted stables after the most noteble horses there. Tokens were used to identify how much each couple earned, usually father and son, which were kept under all the ore to prevent a switcheroo from I'll meaning coworkers, as income was very low. The miner got paid, the guy who lifted the rubble loading the carts was paid at the miners discretion. The museum has a replica of the old ambulance, perhaps it's even original-probably so-refurbished by either boultby or the steel works. They have plenty of things to show, not just mining stuff too. I think they'd benefit a ton from one of your videos based on the museum, they're also looking for a media artist too if you wouldn't mind helping with that

Our history is amazing, all the places that look so tranquil now that were once busy industrial hubs. It's hard to imagine what they would have been like with people, carts, horses and all manner of labour going on.
