this interview was a chance for an older black woman to uplift a young black girl and encourage her to explore other avenues of life rather than sex work which is dangerous and uncertain. she’s 18 living alone, with no prospect of uni or employment and instead of unpacking why that’s the case, the interviewer was hellbent on humiliating and shaming her.
I thought this too. Could have been her mentor! And for an interviewer she really is not listening because 18 living alone in this line of work… where are the adults in her life?

This could have gone so differently had the interviewer handled her emotions and not been so triggered. After Tumelo answered her questions, the interviewer would just respond with "ok cool" NEXT. I am in my daughter’s life heavily because of this. Look how intelligent smart brave and tough this 18 year old is. She completely handled herself like a veteran I am really impressed. As a teacher of teenagers for more than 35 years, I was very disappointed unprofessional behavior of the host. She really let her guest push her buttons. Yes, I think some of her questions and comments suggest that she was and maybe still is "a mean girl".
In terms of Tumelo, that young women was well spoken, honest and her answers were genuine and carefully phrased. While I may not agree with her lifestyle choices, I see her as an intelligent, confident young woman.
