- The COVID-19 lockdown has resulted in some severe restrictions across India. While it is a difficult time for the world at large, certain sections of society are particularly hit hard. Dharavi in Mumbai is Asia's largest slum with close to 15 lakh people living in just 2.1 square kilometers. With a population density of over 700,000 per square kilometer, Dharavi is a super sensitive zone during the coronavirus pandemic. Social distancing is practically impossible and authorities have kept a close eye on developments here.
Tightly packed shanties, extremely poor sanitation, food shortage and a hard clampdown on movement adds to the misery of those living here. Dharavi is not only famous for being one of the biggest slums in the world. The narrow alleys of Dharavi are home to thousands of small scale businesses that contribute in the billions to the economy. 'Working from home' is not an option for these daily wage earners and as a result business owners and laborers are suffering.
One such example is the 100-year old pottery industry in Dharavi's Kumbhar Wada with 1500-2000 families dependent on it. People here believe that there should have been a few days notice about the lockdown so they could return home as a large number of them come from across India. Now, laborers who survive on daily wages are left stranded without work and are confined to the small rooms of their workshops. There's no way for them to socially distance or self isolate. Some people have complained about a lack of essential supplies too.
The State Health and Family Welfare Minister Rajesh Tope has taken note of the situation and is acting on the current drawbacks. The Police too is taking strict measures to make sure people don't roam the streets, although it is a tough ask in these areas. There seems to be a strong resolve in the people here who are supporting each other. The business owners and workers are not abandoning each other in these tough times. While most of us can still access basic needs, practice social distancing and not worry about our next meal, the people of Dharavi have troubled days ahead but are doing their best to keep their spirits up.

BMC should provide 100 mobile toilets to Dharavi.
1000000÷5 = 200000 toilet should be there 100 me kya hoga....
Atleast bmc has to initiated....
Not just 100 , as many as toilets which are not in use all over mumbai should be immediately move there, our people life is more important than anything in this world

Dharavi people are earning money in thousands per month,yet they prefer to do things this way, why, a simple answer, you can't change what you are no matter how best you get. It's the behavior what makes anyone better in given circumstances. I've seen poor people in rural India who are earning barely to make it yet are more civilized and humble.

Why don't authorities accomodate these people in schools, which are all vacate at least for one month, so that their lives can be saved, it's a disaster management. It's very difficult maintain social distancing in Dharavi slums. God bless you all 😇

If they were rich and stuck abroad the government would send them jets and plane to evacuate them.since they are poor and only required during voting time they are expendable assets.more people have died in the last 21 days from illnesses rather than caronavirus.as doctors clinics are closed.while we term doctors bas carona warriors there is a huge population of doctors who are hiding in there homes instead of doing there jobs.

My point is GDP is useless to define reality , GDP per capita is the right measure to define the reality . Dharavi slums are just a deficit on india , population and disease bomb . Nothing else .

I'm from Dharavi and everything is managed well till date by all frontline workers. Disinfectant are sprayed to every corner of this area police and people are cooperating well and supporting each other.

After tackling COVID19, new and hygienic housing must be provided for all slum dwellers of Mumbai. Income tax collected from Mumbai should be used for this purpose. After all they also contribute towards the growth of Mumbai.
To make swatch Mumbai, we must house the poor from slums to decent housing first. City beautification projects can be done later.
Let us aspire to make Mumbai slum-free.

I am surprised to see that the uneducated but skilled poor people are so co operative. This phase will pass on within few weeks or months but whatever the government, can find an acceptable solution to resolve the "Jopad Patti". 1 toilet for 1400+ now this is not acceptable solution for any human society. We as a society feel ashamed they we could not find solution for Dharivi and alikes among the country.
Long term solution is required for Dharavi.

Feel really bad for the people living in Dharavi area as mostly there r slums and in slums u will find mostly people working on daily wages, essential commodities r available but if a person does not have money to buy them then what will that person do, thanks to the good samaritans and NGO's whose providing them with cooked food or raw food kits so that they can pull on their day's, God bless all of them

Life is city is not so easy as it seems it is here you have to earn good to live a comfortable life or u end up in slums so try to earn a living where it's comfortable don't rush to cities without proper arrangements don't belive in television shows and dream without hardwork

As a guy who lives in dharavi I can tell you if the situation is not dealt in the way it should be thousands of people in dharavi will end up getting covid +. There's guy a van of police sitting on the road and all the gully's are crowed with people, why? Coz know one comes in the gully and tells them to go inside there home. Poor migrant labour are suffering for food (MAY ALLAH BLESS THEM) locals are coming forward and helping them. no MLA absolutely know one has come to inspect the situation or comes forward to help. And the worst part? Cases are growing rapidly in dharavi. Everyone plz pray to God we the residents of dharavi + all our Indian brothers & sisters be safe from this pandemic, AMEEN.

India is a big country, Mumbai is pretty big though, Dharavi slum is less than 0.1% area of Mumbai, rest of Mumbai has all good buildings n societies, yet media over use Dharavi to get TRP.
The gap between the poor and the rich in India will get bigger and the urban problems will become more complex and more serious problem in the future.
