Love the fact that you just got right into it with "this review is based upon my opinion of each boot - I've ridden both a bunch - I'm not just reading the marketing material to you". Thanks so much for your knowledge, experience and input!!!
@Sopphaue I have wide feet as well (2E to 4E depending on who is measuring). The Tech 7 is the most comfortable for wide feet. That is because the toe box is wider and it is the softest and least supportive and/or protective. That said, it's very comfortable and a great boot for the price. The SG-12 is fantastic for workmanship, support, protection and comfort. With the micro-adjusting straps, I had no problem getting the boot to fit my wide foot. Though I will add that its snug to start and takes a few hours of breaking in to get comfortable. This boot is at a completely different level than the Tech 7, but also costs about $100 more. I would add the Sidi Crossfire 3 SRS into the conversation. This boot is even more fantastic IMO than the SG-12. Again, because of the micro-adjusting straps, you can get this boot to fit a wide foot. It fits my foot like a glove and has spectacular comfort. No other boot that I've worn is as comfortable as this boot. Price is about $200 more than that Tech 7. Out of the box, the Tech 7 is by far the most comfortable for wide feet. If you are looking for great support, protection or durability though, I would consider the SG-12 or Crossfire 3 and deal with the initial discomfort during break-in.
Had the Tech 7 n killed the soles with in 6 months on OEM ktm pegs, bought the SG12 and 13 months later the soles still look great. Btw, Alpinestars claims they will repair boots n replace soles but when I reached out to them and sent pics they told me to buy new boots even when I offered to pay for the repairs- so took their advice n got the SG12 a superior boot. Excellent for extreme enduro. Touch boots
Same experience! The tech 7’s are very comfortable but the soles were shot in six months. My cousin and I bought the tech 7’s roughly the same time with the same experience. We both feel it’s super comfortable but the longevity of the soles are pretty poor. Just switched to the SG 12’s.
@@kleonikosdroumtsekas7871 not as cozy as the alpines but once broken in n some gell insert my feet feel fine. btw over 2 years on them n they're still in great shape, had to replace the metal toe guards that's it.
do you have the enduro sole? been looking to get the sg12 but not sure if I should wait and find the enduro model. rocky mountain doesn't offer them on the website. I ride single track mostly. nothing too crazy.
I have been wearing Tech 7 boots for many years and liked them. Very comfortable, could feel the pegs and controls just fine, and could walk around almost like wearing regular shoes, but about 4 weeks ago I also got to feel a tree stump crush my left foot and break some metatarsals. Since I am off work now and will be for at least 3 months and have some time to kill while I am waiting to get the pins removed and cast off my foot, I am doing some boot shopping on line and have narrowed it down so far to the Gaerne SG-12. I still care about comfort, but really am most concerned about protection. All of my reading on line so far has been steering me toward the Gaerne. I contacted my cousin this morning because I value his opinion on these types of purchases and wanted to know what he thought about the Gaerne. His response was that he just bought the SG-12 boots 3 weeks ago and he really likes them. We are both near the age of 50 and both started riding when we were teen agers. This is my first (and hopefully last) major injury. I have to wonder if my foot would be less damaged if I'd been wearing a better boot. Going forward, when it comes to purchasing protective riding equipment, I will spend the extra money, because I'm worth it.
For weekend warriors, the Tech 7 is the way to go. Very comfortable, light, zero break-in time and affordable. I don't ride 3 times a week and EVERY weekend - unfortunately - so the Alpinestars fits what I need.
I had the tech-7 for something like 2 years until the soles break down, I was on a budget and decided to go for entery level gaerne GX-1, for me the feeling fit and materials was better then the tech-7 and planning to put my hands on the sg12 they are looking sick! Great review👍
The SG-12 is fantastic for workmanship, support, protection and comfort. With the micro-adjusting straps, you can customize it to fit to your foot. Though I will add that its snug/stiff to start and takes a few hours of breaking in to get comfortable. IMO, this boot sets the standard for a "premium level" mx boot. IMO, this boot is at a completely different level than the Tech 7, but also costs about $100 more. I would add the Sidi Crossfire 3 SRS into the conversation. This boot is even more fantastic IMO than the SG-12. Again, because of the micro-adjusting straps, you can customize the fit to your foot. It fits my foot like a glove and has spectacular comfort. No other boot that I've worn is as comfortable as this boot. For me it flexes better and is more comfortable than the SG-12. Price is about $200 more than that Tech 7. IMO, this is the boot that should most often be compared to the SG-12. It's tough to compare the Tech 7 to the SG-12 and/or Crossfire 3, because they simply are at different levels. The Gaerne and Sidi are built in Italy by craftsmen - not so for the Tech 7. IMO the Tech 7 is super comfy and lighter in weight, but is not going to match either the Gaerne or the Sidi for durability, protection or long-term comfort. But there is a significant price difference too. Because of the durability, I think you will get a better long-term value from the SG-12 or Crossfire 3, plus have a better boot along the way. I would expect the Tech 7 to last 1 or 2 years. The SG-12 or Crossfire 3 should last 3-5 years, possibly even longer if you take care of it. BTW, I'm not a bootie fan so the Tech 10 never even got in the race. I've never tried the Fox Instinct.
I know a lot of people try these boots on in the showroom and think the Tech 7s are better because they feel like a running shoe. Having owned both, there is a reason the SG-12s are more expensive, they are more comfortable on the bike and way more protective. I think people confuse the lack of protection on the Tech 7s as comfort, I mean a shoe is comfortable, but you wouldn't ride with one. My feet would always feel fatigued after a long day in the mountains with the Tech 7s.
Ive got a pair of the Tech 7's, and have ridden with them religiously for the past 2 seasons. They were perfectly comfortable right out of the box, basically no break in. And they are holding up really well, still look almost new. I did go head on with a razer 1000 turbo 2 weekends ago, and my ankle is still pretty wrecked. Protection is there, but could be a little better. Still, a great boot.
Our family has spent thousands on most all TOP of the line boots, We have came to this conclusion, ASatars Tech 7, Forma Dominator 2.0 are the two best boots for all around protection , price, comfort, durability...we might give the new Leatt GPX 5.5 a shot next spring.
Sg12 all day best protection and durability still look great after years of riding... Had a few times I thought for sure I broke my foot or something and id get off the bike I'd be fine.
Where you were pressing with your thumbs at about 5:27 is right where riders get metatarsal breaks. So some stiffness there is good. For one job I was required to wear boots with a shield there, and the company suggested the Red Wing model that had a removable metatarsal shield. (Not suggesting that for riding, just a reason to like the Gaerne.)
Been searching the web for foot breaks in motocross. I broke three metatarsals in 4 places in the Gaerne's last Thanksgiving. Got some whiskey throttle and went off the back of the bike but I have no idea that I broke my foot for about 10 minutes. So I'm not sure what happened to cause the breaks. Now I want to know so I can try to do something about it. I've been thinking I might need new boots. I was hoping you could tell me how a foot breaks like mine in these boots!! That is, what makes it happen. I've had whiskey throttle crashes before but never hurt my foot at all. Thanks!!
@@alienxyt I don’t know of any motorcycle boots that will protect you from a top down (top of the foot) crush. The sole stiffness is to protect you if your foot is laying sideways and someone runs over it (and of course to make it easier to stand on pegs and prevent hyper flexing.) The biggest strongest toe cup you can find would be good. My guess is something like the frame smashed into your foot from the top.
@@oklahomahank2378 Thanks for the response. I didn't see very many broken foot injuries when I searched. It's hard to imagine how those boots could have failed me. They're built like you are wearing a tank on your lower leg. Thanks again!
@@alienxyt I am no expert. Apparently a twist or sudden turn while the foot is pressing down can cause it as well. I just assumed it was usually a top down crush because that’s what the boot guys told me when I was buying work boots. I did break my foot one time due to twisting while logging, but at that time I was not very aware of what metatarsals even were. (I slipped on some ice while moving a tree.). Did you ever figure out the cause? It just seems weird your foot and ankle could twist that much with motocross boots on.
@@oklahomahank2378 never did. If I had to take a guess, I would say I landed weight forward on my toes and the rigidity of the toe box cracked my foot. But like I said, I wasn't even aware of my feet until some of the rest of the shock wore off and somebody helped me up. Then I knew I couldn't stand on it.
I have had the Tech 7 for about 70 hrs. of riding. Medium enduro. They are comfortable out of box, but REALLY loosened up the last two months... I sent it superman style last week and hyper extended my ankle pretty bad. I'm looking for more protection in my next boot.
I got the Tech 7 for enduro this year. they are good, and very comfortable. but in less then 1 season i have shredded the sole around the peg and rear brake
Did you get the Drystar? How well do your boots dry after being dunked in rivers? I ride a lot of jungle and Drystar would be kinda pointless wading rivers. But if the only downside of Drystar is price I might buy them anyway. Just assumed the waterproof version might be hard to dry out
Honestly your ignition and clutch covers can be replace and fixed and maybe even touched up, but toes, ankles and feet don’t always heal correctly, also just take the steel toes off, and your covers won’t get stuffed up, plus it helps keep your feet not getting caught on the brake pedal and making accidental shifts, I’ve had a pair of tech sevens, they don’t last and don’t protect your feet or toes, I now wear sg12’s best switch I’ve ever made, yeah you don’t feel your controls as much, but you’ll get used it, and you get so much more protection and last a lot longer.
On my second pair of S12 and super happy for the quality and they just feels so secure. But not very watertight. Therefor I also have a pair of TCX Comp Evo 2 Michelin who are softer (they don't feel so secure) and can hold some water outside. In a "competition" I just won a pair of Tech 7 Enduro. I don't need 3 pairs of boots, but couldn't change them in some other riding gear. With a membrane inside I guess they will be used for winter conditions and hope they will hold my feet warm and dry.
Nice video! Just wish it was out before I bought my Tech 7s a while ago. You touched on everything that I like and dislike about the Tech 7. Likes: Very comfortable, the first ride they felt broken in, offers great support, excellent boot for the price. Dislikes: I have a wider calf so I can't sport my knee protection as comfortably. The buckles are tough to lock, even out of the box, and they pop loose from time to time. Probably has to do with the knee brace and not being able to tighten it as much. Overall I really like the Tech 7s though and don't regret buying them. It was a good buy but I will try out the SG next time.
when i crashed on concrete while doing a wheelie, i really wish the sole of gaerne was softer for better impact protection. i destroyed my ACL and got minor fracture. was wearing gaerne gx1, now just got tech 7. Got 4 more months to recover from surgery until i can try to ride on them.
Go with the all leather construction, I've had my Alpine Stars Tech 8 since 2005 riding every weekend all leather construction. They are showing there age now the front toe box plastic cover is splitting now but the leather underneath is intact. Go for stitched leather sole. SG12 will be my next boot.
6 months and counting and my Gaerne SG-12 still hurt my big toes so bad that I where my sneakers between rides. Feel like Gaerne used a unisex shoe design on a size 13 man's mx boot. Other than that I like my Gaerne SG-12's and their traditional design. The souls are great.
Hi everyone. As a beginner motorcyclist, I am trying to find a balance between not compromising on solid gear to ensure I have a safe foundation on the road, and not going overboard by buying things I won't need. I want a Honda Rebel 500 as my first bike, so nothing rebellious here. I guess I would have an urban style, but at the same time, safety is my priority over style and everything else. I understand these are very high-quality and high-performance boots. Is this what is needed for all riding styles for optimal safety, or is this more for motorcyclists who actually go off-road or are 'extreme' riders? All tips and knowledge are welcome!
Thank you for your honest feedback. it really helps to make an informed decision. I love the Tech 7 personally and had the same pair for 10+ years but I can see why so many prefer the SG-12, it's a great boot. Either way, enjoy!
Why didn't you compare the SG10 vs. Tech 7? Seems more of a level playing field. I love my Tech 7's. They usually last me about 6 years. But would really like to know how they sack up to the SG10's.
I would say they're pretty comparable in width. What I do like about the Tech 7 is the outer shell material is slightly softer than the SG which makes it even more comfortable. My big toe tends to rub on the inside of the SG-12 and can get a little sore after a full day of riding, but it's not bad. - Chase
I have had both but the sg12 is thr boot for me little aggravating until you get use to them i have large calls i was really tight with tech 7.s sg12 has a lot more room only pair of boots that ive ever had that don't look al bulged and stretched when there buckeld up i can even stick my fingers in the top of my sg12,s they are the only boots I will ever buy again
I’m actually pumped they did this comparison I’ve been running tech 7s for the last 5 years and I’ve been looking into boots that are durable I want something to last me years so I only have to buy 1 boot every how many years
I purchased the Tech 7s and have to say that I love the comfort of the boot. My one and only complaint would be that if you have big calves, this boot presents a little bit of a challenge trying to get the velcro to line up and secure fully and that is without knee braces. I definitely think the design of this boot could stand some improvement in fit and adjustability at the top.
Made in Italy vs made in Thailand, SG12 last brand not model brand made in Italy by Italian artisans, vs a name made in a sweat shop out of Asia! No contest, Alpine stars you pay for a name, yes they maybe comfortable, if you want to keep throwing money and supporting companies that rip you off and still charge a premium go ahead, I’ll support a real company and there people, even if it costs more, I don’t mind a break in period that’s always has proved my boots are genuine and last and they always have. Pay for a name or pay for quality and actual true value, any intelligent person it’s an easy decision, dumb people chase a name brand and support corporate greed, it’s that simple. SG12 will continue to be my go too boots.
Cl4rky I grew up in the 80s and 90s what do you mean 😂 I ride 90% Enduro and Trail 10% Track (MX) for me I love the steel toe and old school features like stitched sole with modern technology, the weight and extra support and protection out weigh those factors, plus they get better with age, lots of boots get worse with age. But respect ya POV 🤙
Maverick224 perfect example of comparison and how each have different pros and cons for different people. I own the tech 7’s. Straight of the box there good to go. Don’t affect my expensive aftermarket covers. And seeing as though I constantly change/upgrade my gear sets I’m getting new boots every year to match so having something last many years doesn’t matter to me. Videos like these are great cause I believe there is a lot to compare for the buyers
Love the sg12 I recently took a tour of the facility in Italy where they make the boots and they have only the best children boot makers from all over the region , slaves that have retired from Gucci , Armani, and Louis Vuitton , for lunch they usually do a nice spread with meatballs and lasagna , there supervisor vinmy does this technique with the garlic , he cuts it so thin that it melts in your mouth , it was quite anexperience and I’d recommend the sg12 for any one looking for a quality boot
Great video. I decided to go with the SG12's out of these two for durability and protection. I just got them and have been wearing them around the house to see if I like them. I normally wear 11 1/2 so got an 11. The fit is great for my foot/toes, but the memory foam is super uncomfortable and there is lots of pressure around the insides of my ankles/just above the ankle bone. I know there is great support in there, but this just feels a bit painful like someone is pushing their thumb into my leg. Does this go away once they break in? I'd hate to keep them only to find it doesn't get more comfortable. I can't really imagine wearing these all day as is.
David, I don't know if that would go away or not. sounds like you've got a pretty good pressure point. I can wear my SG12s all day with no issues. I would use our fit guarantee rather than regret it later on. The Tech 7 are very comfortable. - Chase
I've been using my SG12's for 5-6 seasons. Buckles and durability are amazing, I will definitely buy again. My buddies run the tech 7 and their feet get wet going through the smallest mud puddle, and the soles are not holding up well
I have really wide feet and high arch. I tried all Gaerne SGs and didn't even considered Alpinestars Tech-7 or 10, because they looked much narrower and I like the high quality of the Gaerne boots. Just when I wanted to give up, I gave the Tech-7 a shot, and voila: perfect fit for me. Enjoying them since 3 years, no problems at all. They tend to squeak when walking, but hey...
What should i get Fox Racing Comp,Alphine Star tech 5 or you guys recommend something im more on MX and Beginner but i have mountainbike background so I like send big and what boots should i get like it can survive heavy landings
I have the tech 7 for 3 years now. Sizing isnt the best for my feet. Lovely flexible boot and a lott of pegfeel which i like to have. BUT i recently had a incident and hurt my ankle for the 5th time, i ordered the SG12's. Damn i didnt know that I missed that support from a boot a lott. It would be great if the SG12 have a different sole instead of the stitched on soles. but so much more supportive and durable... love them !!
Nice video ! Great review, quite informative... Yet there is something that was not mentioned in the video and that is still important and relevant to some people ( and I am one of those). That is the range of available sizes for each of those boots. I've checked on Gaerne and Alpinestars websites as I was curious. The SG12 goes from size 7 to 13 or 14 depending on the edition. The Tech 7 offers 3 to 4 more sizes as it goes from 5 to 16. That's a big plus for me and definitely worth noticing ! I'm 6.4ft tall and wear boots and shoes in size 15, which means the SG12 would not be an option for me. So if you're a kid or a tall guy like myself, then the best - and arguably the only possible - choice between those two boots might have to be the Tech 7.
Trying to decide between the tech 7 euro drystars or the sg12. It will be my first pair of boots and it kind of lost me when Chase said the 12s were stiff and hard to feel where your feet are.
I would choose the SG12 over the tech 7 for durability and overall support and protection. It just takes a little more time for them to break in and yes, the soles are stiffer and you don't have as much feel. Something you will get used to though. - Chase
I must have gotten a weird cut on the SG 12. After a full season in them they still squeeze the inside of my left foot. I recently broke my left ankle (skateboarding) , there is no way I can continue riding SG12s. Looking at the Tech 7 for a bit of compromise. I am a boomer C level trail rider for reference.
The 5.5 is a good boot. Doesn't have the durability of the SG12, but the performance is really good. Depending on the condition of the used boots, I'd probably go with the 5.5. If they were both new, I'd get the SG12, but put a new insole in it right away. - Chase
I have the Tech 7s, and they are LOUD to walk in. It was so annoying that I cut out the floating hinge thing, which solved the problem. Other than that, they are comfortable boots. They seem to run long, so I think going a full size lower wouldn't hurt. I'm looking into the Gaerne S-12 as a replacement now, though. So this video was a great find.
My only complaint with the Tech 7s is that the plastic on the side of the boot melts when i ride my 125. my boot rubs the pipe and i cant really do anything about it and its getting to the point where im going to have to get new boots soon and ive only had these about 8 months.
I've had Alpinestars, Fox, even AXO but my SG12s are the best for protection, durability and quality. Remember when all boots had the stitched-on sole? Alpinestars were better 20 years ago, in my opinion.
I do agree 100%. Had Tech2/4/7/8. Best quality was Tech2/4. Tech 7 was more comfy and Tech 8 start to fall apart one day... after that I switched to SIDI SRS2. Really like them! Next boot you can see in this video on the very left side!
Caveat for new riders buying their first MX boot: calling either of these "comfortable" is only relative to MX boots. In absolute terms, all MX boots with an acceptable level of protection are horrendously uncomfortable. Compared to anything you've worn before, they'll be heavy, hard to walk in, seemingly impossible to find the gear shift in, and uncomfortable to the point of pain. All of this gets better as you break them in and acclimatize to them, and the protection level is absolutely worth it, but it'll be easier if you go into this with the right expectation. You'll read a lot of comments saying the tech7s are "light" and "comfortable", but...no, they're really not. Another hot tip: these boots are necessarily very rigid. If your feet are even slightly outside whatever the manufacturer thinks "normal" is, they will not fit. Ever. You can ride in pain, or skimp on protection, or...get as close to a fit as you can, then take the boots to a ski boot fitter. There are no MX boot fitters in most MX shops, because the MX industry glorifies pain. Skiers like to be comfortable, and they have similarly rigid boots. Nobody expects to buy a top ski boot and wear it off the shelf, if you think about it for a minute the idea is laughable. So talk to those guys and have a happier life.
I went from Sidi SRS2's (very hard to buckle with large calves even with the additional adjustments) to Gaerne SG12. My fat calves made it too hard to fit in the Sidi's but my new Sg12's have too much space above my toes and had to adjust my shifter up a notch to fit. Harder to shift gears with the SG-12's (too tall in toe box area). The SG12's have super supportive feel from ankle on up. Tried on the Tech 7's but the size 10 have too small an opening for my calves and the size 11's were too big in the foot area. The SG12 in 10.5 size fit well but thinking I should have tried the new Sidi to see if the calf area is bigger. My old AXO RC5's fit better than any of them! Too bad AXO has disappeared. And who wants to spend $600 on the Tech 10's anyway. The SG12's were too much as it is. Tried on the new Leatt 5.5's. Leatts are very thick all the way around and seem a bit too Chinese in quality like the Fox Instinct.
The only problem I have with the SG-12 is the rear sliding-pivot thing on the back, my boots are really worn out and the slider thing pops out. Otherwise awesome boot!
Chase is there any downside to the Drystar version of the tech 7? Would it take longer to dry after wading rivers waist deep? Debating on Drystar tech 7 vs normal version if the only downside is price I don’t mind paying more. I’m in deep water a lot and need fast drying boots but the Drystar would be nice for casual riding and puddles
Because water could get trapped between the Drystar liner and the outer microfiber, it could take a little longer for them to dry. But that might be a better question for Alpinestars. I don't want to give you wrong info. - Chase
Rocky Mountain ATV MC Thanks bro that’s kinda my thought process on it as well, I think I’m still going to pull the trigger on the DryStar and go beat them up around the world
Looking through reviews, some people are noting that SG12 run large, while others claim true to size. Nobody close to me carries the SG12. I was given some O’Neal Element boots when beginning in bikes. They were a size 9 (I wear 8.5 in sneakers) and then I picked up some Alpinestars Tech 7 from a friend that didn’t care for them in a size 8. Super comfortable, but I would prefer something with more protector and durability. Can anyone please advise if I should go with a size 8 or a size 9 in the SG12? Thank you in advance for any assistance and suggestions.
If a size 8 in the tech 7 fit you then I would get an 8 in the SG12. If anything, the SG12 fits just a tad large but not a full size. I wear a 9, the same size I wear in all other boots. Hope this helps. - Chase
Tech 7 Enduro Drystar is a waterproof, off-road motocross boot. We have a spotlight on it. ruclips.net/video/qzjVjh7snV8/видео.html Hope this helps - Chase
Great Video! At the Moment i´m changing from they Gaerne Youth boots to the adult version and because of the price i also thinked about getting the Tech 7. But in the End i think protection is more important then comfort, so i will go with the SG12
I know the tech 7 is now available in an enduro model with more aggressive tread on the soles. Are there any plans from Garne to do the same? I absolutely love my sg12's, but I really want an enduro sole on my next boots.
If you only ride MX, SX, or like flat track stuff I'd run Tech 7. If you are offroad I would run the SG12 or another replaceable sole steel capped boot. I would stay away from Tech 7 in offroad riding/racing if you like having all your toes.
I think we really need a video on the SG-12 vs the leatts! I Bought the new Leatts and I love them. They are in the same price range so I would be curious to see how they compare seeing how everyone loves the SG-12
Coincidental... Just earlier today I was trying to compare the SG-12 to the Forma Predator 2.0. I'm on my third pair of Predators (first pair of 2.0). I like them but I'd also like for boots to last longer than 1.5 years...
Have you ever crushed and broken your toes by hitting a hidden rock?? I have, the ER cost $ thousands for dollars. If you ride off road spend the money for the best protection for your feet, also look at the SG-10! Remember motocross is not off-road/enduro AStars are not enduro boots.
Dude, duct tape that sh*t and keep riding. Hospitals are for p*ssies. I broke my back two times, no pain killers ever !! Had to learn how to walk again sure but I never forgot how to ride :-)
I like my tech 7s because theyre comfortable and I can feel the footpegs and shifter. I dont know how he claims riders had them last 4-5 years. I've had 2 tech 7s and they last me 2 years each before the sole wear through. That is the only downside I've found on them.
10:04 wrong. that is not a glide/pivot point. That's actually just a glide/stopper that moves in its own groove. the pivot point on the side shown here is actually located under the plastics of the second buckle right above that logo plate with the screw in it which you mistakenly referred to as a glide/pivot point. Fact check me. Unbuckle it and lift that dirt-colored plastic, you'll see the actual pivot point.
@@CodyMechanix Yeah that's true but safety gear is like insurance. You don't need it until you do. I broke an outside metatarsal in cheap boots by rolling my foot sideways in a relatively small crash. That's exactly what hinges prevent. Different strokes for differnt folks though.
legostuffmaker it’s never happened to anybody in my family for generations. We’ve always gotten the cheapest boots available and we’ve had hundreds of wipeouts and crashes.
I really liked the tech 7 for feel and comfort on 3rd pair. However I broke my distal fibula with them recently, I probably still would have broke it with the SG12. But after feeling sg12 I'll be buying them next, feel clunky and robotic..but trade off for safety

@@illskillz05 12s only offer 1 sole.
I finally killed the left sole n ordered the Sidi Atojo while my sg12 gets new soles. Atojo is a great boot too.
Thanks for sharing!
I agree all the way, I'm a weekend warrior Dad that can't afford 4 bills for boots but still need to be at work on Monday if I crash.
I had the tech-7 for something like 2 years until the soles break down,
I was on a budget and decided to go for entery level gaerne GX-1, for me the feeling fit and materials was better then the tech-7 and planning to put my hands on the sg12 they are looking sick! Great review👍
Uncomparable boots, the SG12 are by far superior over the tech 7 in every parameter, especially for enduro riding.
Yep and the only brand left made in Italy...even sidi is made in eastern europe now

If I want to perform-Tech 7’s
If I crash-SG-12’s
Been using tech 7 for years, no complaint, great boots👍🏿👍🏿
Did you ever try the 5.5? Thoughts?
The sole stiffness is to protect you if your foot is laying sideways and someone runs over it (and of course to make it easier to stand on pegs and prevent hyper flexing.)
The biggest strongest toe cup you can find would be good.
Bruh first ride did that to me
Did you get the Drystar? How well do your boots dry after being dunked in rivers? I ride a lot of jungle and Drystar would be kinda pointless wading rivers. But if the only downside of Drystar is price I might buy them anyway. Just assumed the waterproof version might be hard to dry out
@@TokyotimTech I did not, when I got mine the dry version wasnt out.
I don't think it would've mattered what boot you were wearing. Dude, you wheelied over on concrete. - Chase
Chase, I have eee wide feet, what is the widest boot made? Thanks
And I'm over here riding in Alpinestars Tech 1s....
Looks like you're ready for an upgrade!!!!
Go with the all leather construction, I've had my Alpine Stars Tech 8 since 2005 riding every weekend all leather construction. They are showing there age now the front toe box plastic cover is splitting now but the leather underneath is intact. Go for stitched leather sole. SG12 will be my next boot.
Since 2005? Which age are they showing 😂
I still race my sg12 I got in 2012. So 11 years later still going strong
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching - Chase
Why didn't you compare the SG10 vs. Tech 7? Seems more of a level playing field. I love my Tech 7's. They usually last me about 6 years. But would really like to know how they sack up to the SG10's.
I have both, tech 7 = confortable but less protection, sg12 = protection but more unconfortable
Are the G,s Wider in the foot an box??👍👍🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
I would say they're pretty comparable in width. What I do like about the Tech 7 is the outer shell material is slightly softer than the SG which makes it even more comfortable. My big toe tends to rub on the inside of the SG-12 and can get a little sore after a full day of riding, but it's not bad. - Chase
Gaerne sg 10s here . Flipped my quad had nerf bar land on my upper ankle . Walked away . Had so many spills when my boots have saved my leg and foot
I’m actually pumped they did this comparison I’ve been running tech 7s for the last 5 years and I’ve been looking into boots that are durable I want something to last me years so I only have to buy 1 boot every how many years
If you want one boot to last you many years, the SG12 would be my top choice. - Chase
I own a pair of sg10s. I owned them since 2007. Best boot I’ve ever owned.
no doubts ... SG12 is the best over all of them including SIDI.
I just bought the tech 7 from rmatvmc and have ridden in the 3 times and I really like the boot, I agree with what Chase is saying.
Thanks for sharing. I"m in the same boat with the Tech 7. - Chase
I've tried every boot ever made and nothing is as comfortable as a tech 7.
I have three different friends with tech sevens that are falling apart. If you ride a lot of hours every year go for the SG 12s
Can you make a vid on which bike is better a CRF150R or a YZ85
Maverick224 I’m hearing ya, but the metal toe is so 80’s-90’s and they scratch the shit out of the clutch and ignition covers
Cl4rky I grew up in the 80s and 90s what do you mean 😂
I ride 90% Enduro and Trail 10% Track (MX) for me I love the steel toe and old school features like stitched sole with modern technology, the weight and extra support and protection out weigh those factors, plus they get better with age, lots of boots get worse with age.
@@Cl4rky don't like scratches? Don't but dirt bike. Buy Honda Gold Wing.
I feel like a comparison to a Tech 10 would have been a nice comparison for people looking for the top level boot from both brands.
That video is coming.
- Chase
@@rmatvmc thanks for the feedback! I may order some Tech 7’s to compare and then decide.
I own and wear both boots. I like the SG-12 better but the tech 7's are a great pair of back ups.
I'm thinking of getting Tech 7 enduro for my 1290 SAS.
I've been using my SG12's for 5-6 seasons. Buckles and durability are amazing, I will definitely buy again. My buddies run the tech 7 and their feet get wet going through the smallest mud puddle, and the soles are not holding up well
Curious about the issues with sore toes, and what your experience is with that?
I have really wide feet and high arch. I tried all Gaerne SGs and didn't even considered Alpinestars Tech-7 or 10, because they looked much narrower and I like the high quality of the Gaerne boots. Just when I wanted to give up, I gave the Tech-7 a shot, and voila: perfect fit for me. Enjoying them since 3 years, no problems at all. They tend to squeak when walking, but hey...
gaerne's are too narrow yep
What should i get Fox Racing Comp,Alphine Star tech 5 or you guys recommend something im more on MX and Beginner but i have mountainbike background so I like send big and what boots should i get like it can survive heavy landings
I’d recommend the Fox comp
@@Moby671 I would go with the Tech 5. - Chase
Would the Tech 7 be a good choice for mostly ADV road touring and occasional off road ? Say 80/20 or 70/30?
If you don't spend too much time walking around then I think so. They're a very comfortable boot and easy to wear all day, just stiff when walking.
Now That's how a professional review is done.
Keep up the good work Chase.
Greetings from Israel Nazareth brother.
That is good info! We'll keep that in mind for future videos. Thanks.
- Chase
@@rmatvmc I just ride easier trails and no track since im just starting out. Would you still go with the SG12s?
I must have gotten a weird cut on the SG 12. After a full season in them they still squeeze the inside of my left foot. I recently broke my left ankle (skateboarding) , there is no way I can continue riding SG12s. Looking at the Tech 7 for a bit of compromise. I am a boomer C level trail rider for reference.
The Tech 7 is a great boot. I'll bet you would really like the new Fox Motion or Instinct too. - Chase
What would you recommend to take new leatt 5.5 or used item sg12?
Lubricants?
I love the stitched on sole style, dont own any MX boots yet but all my work/outdoor boots have traditional soles and I think they look way better
Great review! . I have both Sg12 is my go to boot
My tech 7 is falling apart. think they are better on the track. Enduro riding just kills them/
My only complaint with the Tech 7s is that the plastic on the side of the boot melts when i ride my 125. my boot rubs the pipe and i cant really do anything about it and its getting to the point where im going to have to get new boots soon and ive only had these about 8 months.
Great video, what about fitment for the SG-12? I wear a 10.5 in regular shoes, what size would be best to order? Thanks!
I would go with an 11 if you're a 10.5. - Chase
Leatts are very thick all the way around and seem a bit too Chinese in quality like the Fox Instinct.
does tech 7 have the same feel to their entry level tech 3?
Gaerne all the way. Always.
- Chase

I haven't heard of any plans for that. I heard that had a version that is only sold in Europe with and enduro sole but I'm not totally sure. - Chase
@@rmatvmc They have it on their site. When are you guys getting them in Chase?
If you only ride MX, SX, or like flat track stuff I'd run Tech 7. If you are offroad I would run the SG12 or another replaceable sole steel capped boot. I would stay away from Tech 7 in offroad riding/racing if you like having all your toes.
Please compare to the Tech 10
How to buy from you?im in indonesia
You have a fancy work boot my AStars and then you have the top of the line boot by Gaerne so you can’t compare the two.
does the sg10 have slimmer toe box compared to sg12?
Nope, they're pretty much the same.
What would be good boots for hard enduro riding?
Crossfire 2 or 3 TA, Tech 7 Enduro Drystar, Fox instinct x, Sidi Atajo, Gaerne SG12. These would be my top picks. - Chase

I think we really need a video on the SG-12 vs the leatts! I Bought the new Leatts and I love them. They are in the same price range so I would be curious to see how they compare seeing how everyone loves the SG-12
We will have one of those coming!
I'm trying to get a few more hours of ride time in the 5.5 to give a really good comparison. - Chase
@@rmatvmc Awesome! I look forward to seeing that!
not is the same class. tech 7 for lightweight comfy learner. SG12 for actual protective motocross boot
Love my sg12s
can you do the new tech 10 vs the newest sg12
Coming soon.
Had issues with my tech 7's I was always a tech 8 booty guy but the tech 7 is not in the same relm as my SG 12's
Coincidental... Just earlier today I was trying to compare the SG-12 to the Forma Predator 2.0. I'm on my third pair of Predators (first pair of 2.0). I like them but I'd also like for boots to last longer than 1.5 years...
Then the SG12 is a good choice.
I think the SG-12 is more comparable to the Astars Tech 8.
Based on pricing, I think you're right. The Tech 8 and SG12 are both about $500.
SG12 > All other MX boots.
Wearing SG12 boots is like having your foot in a cast IMHO. break in is a major pain
do you guys have shipping to india?
We do not. Sorry.
Weird I ride enduro and wear, get this... Tech7 Enduros
Dude, duct tape that sh*t and keep riding. Hospitals are for p*ssies. I broke my back two times, no pain killers ever !! Had to learn how to walk again sure but I never forgot how to ride :-)
@@b1slyfox you can literally bend the toe cap with your hand..sketchy
I like my tech 7s because theyre comfortable and I can feel the footpegs and shifter. I dont know how he claims riders had them last 4-5 years. I've had 2 tech 7s and they last me 2 years each before the sole wear through. That is the only downside I've found on them.
Im a 11 in all boots but i have large calves. The Tech 7's are not comfortable for me.
Tec 7
Astars sm8 vs Fox v3-plain-color
10:04 wrong. that is not a glide/pivot point. That's actually just a glide/stopper that moves in its own groove. the pivot point on the side shown here is actually located under the plastics of the second buckle right above that logo plate with the screw in it which you mistakenly referred to as a glide/pivot point. Fact check me. Unbuckle it and lift that dirt-colored plastic, you'll see the actual pivot point.
The cheapest boots are fine for anybody, they’re comfy and protect your feet/legs.
Hinged ankles are important. They prevent ankles bending in a rolling direction. Nobody runs knee braces til they blow out a knee. Same thing.
Lee Van Cleef me and my family have been using the cheapest motocross boots for years and we’ve never had issues.
@@CodyMechanix Yeah that's true but safety gear is like insurance. You don't need it until you do. I broke an outside metatarsal in cheap boots by rolling my foot sideways in a relatively small crash. That's exactly what hinges prevent.
Different strokes for differnt folks though.
Lee Van Cleef People never learn until it happens to them.
legostuffmaker it’s never happened to anybody in my family for generations. We’ve always gotten the cheapest boots available and we’ve had hundreds of wipeouts and crashes.
Gaerne night gut
Gaerne every time
I really liked the tech 7 for feel and comfort on 3rd pair. However I broke my distal fibula with them recently, I probably still would have broke it with the SG12. But after feeling sg12 I'll be buying them next, feel clunky and robotic..but trade off for safety
Tech 7...
