Gothic Basin, Del Campo and Gothic Peak

- Ever since Andrew and I climbed Vesper Peak and the other peaks around Vesper Lake, we've wanted to repeat that with Gothic Basin. So, when we needed a training backpacking trip, we decided to load up our packs and do an overnight.
Camped by Foggy Lake, enjoyed a full moon rise during dinner, then climbed Del Campo Peak in the morning, followed by a spicy traverse over to Gothic Peak where we climbed the north ridge instead of the usual south-east face route.
Ended up being 12 miles and 4900 feet of elevation gain.

This is an excellent video Daniil! Looking at doing Del Campo and I know there's a lot of exposure but the holds look pretty bomber from what I can see.
Incredible! Hats off to you two for conquering such a massive undertaking. And thank you for documenting the journey so I know what I am getting into when I attempt Del Campo. Do you feel that just the Del Campo peak is accomplish able in a day? Or does it require an overnight stay?
Thanks. Definitely doable in a day. Most of the people we met on the trail were doing it as a day hike.
We went up on a Sunday evening because of time constraints and brought backpacking gear and extra water to train for a longer backpacking trip.
@@daniilmag Glad to hear it. Also, i'm a little nervous navigating the scramble on Del Campo. How hard is it to identify the right way as well as climbing it? I don't have a lot of experience scrambling. Was your GPS route helpful? And could you share the GPX file? Much thanks!
@@imag33 Sure, here's the route from the lake and the mountains: www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=16.5/-121.4695/47.9891&pubLink=DAKlicthulcK1iCaeKTgLeIO&trackId=60bb64d2-7202-4ef5-9f0d-a942b4c44503
The key is to not go into the big gully but go pretty much up the face. See the video at 5:59 mark.
At what time did you start and what month will you be suggesting doing this hike ?
We did this at the start of July and it was mostly snow free, but we did have a low snow year that summer. Depending on your comfort level, it's doable earlier but would involve snow travel and might require microspikes or crampons. I would monitor WTA trip reports for this area to see what snow conditions are like.
We left the parking lot on Sunday at 4:30pm and found our campsite at Foggy lake at about 9:30pm. Then in the morning, we left at about 7am, summitted Del Campo at 9am, Gothic Peak at 11:30am, back at camp at 12:30, half an hour to pack up, then about 2.5 hours to get back to the parking lot.
We had lots of backpacking gear so I'm sure its possible to do this much faster, especially if you're day hiking.
how did you get away with flying your drone in these areas? Is it allowed? Just got my mini 3 pro today
This area is in the Morning Star Natural Recreation Conservation Area, and there's no restrictions on drone usage. Other areas like National Parks or Wilderness Areas don't allow drones, so I don't fly there.
I also have a Mini 3 pro, and that lets you fly without registering the drone, but you should still take the free TRUST training from the FAA to know what regulations you need to follow (trust.pilotinstitute.com/).
@@daniilmag thank you for the info! Stay safe out there
Have a gpx? Thanks
