Climbing Guye Peak via East Couloir
Tried out climbing steep snow by climbing Guye Peak via the East Couloir (aka Southeast Gully).
Snow conditions were very variable. Anything under trees was slick and frozen hard, shady spots still had 4-6" of soft snow. I brought up my splitboard on the ascent and enjoyed a few turns on the way down, especially coming down from Cave Ridge, but ended up carrying it down most of the way as a lot of the snow was tracked out and frozen hard.

We're training for an upcoming trip to Philmont Scout Ranch, so I took Katie and Andrew up to do Mailbox. Weather turned out great with cool clouds in the valley below. Trail was mostly snow free. Small patch right at the very top, doable without spikes.

@12:48 please consider extending your rappel and adding a 3rd hand for safety
Normally, I would agree, but in this case, I had already done the first rappel (with extension and 3rd hand) and was holding on to the rope to do a fireman's belay. This was also his first outside rappel so we kept it simple.

Might as well ditch it entirely if your wearing a bicycle helmet, the likelihood of a small rock being kicked down and making its way into one of those long air slots isn’t likely, but is why real climbing helmets don’t have them. Respect on not flying in the wilderness bro.
@@samrichardson2641 yeah, i figured a bike helmet was better than nothing, main concern wasn't rockfall as we generally stayed on top of the ridges. I did end up getting another helmet for the next adventure 😁

Yeah, alpine offwidths always feel harder than the rating for me. Wearing a backpack also didn't help :D

yeah, I was shocked by how many people were up there and lots of them not very comfortable with crampons. But I guess that's what happens when it's so close to Portland.

Great, but doesn't look like solo
Probably misleading terminology, when I say solo, I mean free solo, climbing 5th class terrain without any protection, not climbing it alone/without anyone else around.
Nice video, thanks! Brings back memories of my C2C in '87. We were earlier in the year, had snow in the gully almost to the ridge and were happy to have our axes but did not need crampons. We stashed our rope and rack and went Class 4 from the notch to the summit. Yeah, lots of exposure but pretty easy going and really fun. I don't remember exactly how long we took but I think 14-15 hours, all in daylight. We did not see another party all day. We soloed the descent too (no rapelling) and yes, the descent from Boston Basin to the road is arduous. A true classic, indeed.
I know people solo the west ridge, but I'm not yet comfortable doing that yet, especially with approach shoes. I generally picked the more interesting line instead of trying for the easiest. Now I just need to come back and do the North Ridge at some point, but that definitely requires camping, and thus a permit.

When leaving the parking lot, head LEFT as you're facing the river. There are nice logs to cross starting AFTER the bridge/culvert.
But then you miss out on all the awesome bushwhacking, thorns, and other creeks to cross :D

I went there on Thursday(4/11/24), saw my kid sticker is still there, she is so excited. Nice drone view. My only feedback is background sound is too loud and make my heart uncomfortable so I mute it. Maybe put more gentle sound, or give narrative, that would be great.

At what time did you start and what month will you be suggesting doing this hike ?
We did this at the start of July and it was mostly snow free, but we did have a low snow year that summer. Depending on your comfort level, it's doable earlier but would involve snow travel and might require microspikes or crampons. I would monitor WTA trip reports for this area to see what snow conditions are like. We left the parking lot on Sunday at 4:30pm and found our campsite at Foggy lake at about 9:30pm. Then in the morning, we left at about 7am, summitted Del Campo at 9am, Gothic Peak at 11:30am, back at camp at 12:30, half an hour to pack up, then about 2.5 hours to get back to the parking lot. We had lots of backpacking gear so I'm sure its possible to do this much faster, especially if you're day hiking.

GoPro11 for the handheld footage, DJI Mini3 Pro for the drone shots. I used to use a real camera (mirrorless) with a gimbal but that's pretty heavy combination, and I actually get better stabilization from the GoPro. Although the low light performance is not nearly as good and all the footage is wide angle.

Can you please tell me what is the gear I need to rock climb this mountain? Can you please be detailed as possible, I need a rope and what else?
How much experience do you have with climbing? I would recommend knowing how to place trad pieces as there's no fixed anchors on this route. Also, practice general alpine climbing on sport routes. There's several around here that feel like alpine but are all bolted like Tooth Fairy at Snoqualmie Pass (ruclips.net/video/d-W99CNqVcw/видео.htmlsi=A_-OuCtEbuyKM4Si) or Mile High Club out by Vesper Peak (ruclips.net/video/GKRKYscDweM/видео.htmlsi=6M7CAXFaa3_ynnsX) We had 8 cams, .3 - #2 with doubles in #2, #1, and .75, 8 alpine draws, 4 extra slings (couple of quads) and some extra 6mm cord. Each of us also had a rappel/belay device and some prusiks for backups when rappelling. If I was doing this again, I would bring my set of offset nuts as there were a lot of places to put those. In early season you'll also need glacier travel gear. For rope, we had a 70m 8.5mm Beal rope which worked really well for the rappels as it let us get to lower spots than we could have with just a 60m rope.
