I was in the Navy Brig once in 1984 in Quantico for smoking marijuana. They gave me 5 days Bread and Water. Did 3 days, then they let you out, then you go back and do the last 2 days. I asked why they didn't just give me 5 days straight and they said because your stomach shrinks down too much or something. Got 8 slices a meal (3X/day), and used to roll up the middle into balls to save later and eat the crusts. I acutally don't mind it because when I tell peop;le that as a story, they can't even imagine the Navy still does that... or anyone does or ever did so I'm a rare old bird.
If you had been in the army at that time, you would have been assigned to the "broom platoon." Besides cleaning up the barracks and policing the adjacent grounds, you would have enjoyed weekends and holidays off while the rest of your platoon worked. Such are the differences in the branches.
