I have gone through at least 9 different high-end saddles, and finally found one that works; I have gone through multiple professional bike fittings as well, to make sure my position on the bike is good, and was still having backside pain. There's been a lot of hype around 3D printed saddles, and I was utterly skeptical, but I got a Fizik 3D printed saddle for my Christmas present from my wife, and MAN did it solve all my issues. I used to be in serious pain after about 2 hours, and after a 4 hour ride, it was excruciating; now I can do 4-6 hours and have zero issues. I can't say it will solve everyone's problems, but it's literally a different Universe for me now.
I had a dermatologist recommend cleansing the "area" ASAP after a ride with an anti-bacterial, specifically he suggested HibiClens. I ride 8000 to 9000 miles a year and the saddle still gets uncomfortable, but I've had no sores since heeding his advice.
I increased my indoor riding capability in long workouts by including some one minute low cadence efforts where I stand up and loosen up the position. Helps getting blod flow and prevents painful arms and shoulders as well
I have very bad sit bone pain, it's like sitting on 2 drawing pins 😟 I've found 2 things that have helped me a lot, one is caffeine, it really helps with the pain, The other is stretching on the bike, I come off the saddle and push my hips forward, hold for 3 seconds and sit back down, instant relief, but only for about 10 minutes, hope this helps 👍
It's also important to note that when you get a new saddle it may take time to get the perfect height/forward placement. That may be completely different to your existing saddle. I upgraded to the Selle Italia Watt Superflow (big investment) and it took about 6 rides to get it perfect. I was surprised how much lower I needed to put it versus the previous Bontrager Verse Comp I had. The bontrager had a bit more flex and cushioning which effectively lowered the height. I just took my torque wrench with me on a few rides and made adjustments on the ride. Now feels pretty perfect.
I just bought a new saddle. I opted for a shorter nosed one with the cut outs to try and prevent the numbness. I hope not an exercise of buying a lot of saddles. I live too far away from a decent bike shop to see if I can test them. Cheers
I was having discomfort very quickly after getting on the saddle and eventually realized it is a very small(few millimeters) difference in saddle height between hand and seat pain.
Ps made the mistake of too big bib shorts too. That was awful. They need to be ultra tight it seems cos they seem to sort of grow when they get sweaty.
i have just started rewatching some old episodes of House M.D last night, so when James was discussing saddle sores and boils on the bum I was anticipating a Hugh Laurie impersonation.
Training indoors can generate a lot more sweat & outdoors we tend to naturally shift around more & get out of the saddle more often for gradient or road surface changes. I put a 2nd fan behind the turbo on oscillate mode pointing at my lower back, & for longer turbo rides I set my watch to beep every 15 mins reminding me to do 30 secs out of the saddle.
@@follystone great ideas. I put the fan in front of my wind trainer and crank it up! Didn’t think about one behind! And the get up off my seat trick sounds awesome! Your absolutely right that hills and outdoor rides definitely get you differently! Have a great day!
Ok so I’m having problems because my saddle doesn’t seem to be level left to right. Wt..? Is that ever a thing? Is there some fitting on the seat tube or swim where else that can get bent? I’ve tried several different saddles, all ISM and they all have it so I’m assuming it’s my bike. I get pain on the left /skin off every single ride and it’s putting me off which is very sad. I’ve had a bike fit. 🤷🏻♀️ help!
@@ΠετροςΡουσσος-ε5ξ oh maybe. Well I have hyper mobility and yes if memory serves scoliosis was mentioned many years ago but I hadn’t thought about it (it can’t be v bad) The actual saddle isn’t level L-R though, (I keep using a spirit level on it and staring at it in disbelief haha).-even before I put my wonky body onto it.
It had to be James to talk so much ass! Just kidding, thanks for that vid tackling that particular thorny subject. My advice? Keep making very small adjustments till you get that perfect set up and don't be afraid of changing it mid season.

This came at the perfect time…
About to say the exact same thing
Thank you for sharing such informative video. Don't know how effective are the cushion covers for the seat though 🚴♂️
Enjoyed the video. Well done James!

This was too funny with the complementary pictures alongside James’s dialogue 😅

7:20 " . . . leave it in the comment section DOWN BELOW"? BUTT isn't that were the soreness hurts already?🤣
Oh wow! I like the bikes. How can I get one?
(Handy tips though)
The long sleeve jersey looks VERY cool!
Thank you! Check out our shop if you want to get one for yourself! 👉 gtn.io/11B

When I have my bike on the trainer I last about a 1/2 hour before I start getting sore/numb. When I’m on the road I get much more time.

I just my first bike after 30 years of not riding one… first 6 mile ride and I’m bruised
1st - get the right saddle
2nd - get a good bibs
3rd - use some kind of lotion/creme/oil after shower
Cleat or pedal changes can affect saddle height, and thus affect bike fit, which then can wink lustily at potential saddle sores. 'Jus sayin!

It's exactly the same for me. I think it's hip rotation. Do you have scoliosis?

Have you got an effective way to prevent a sore ass?👀Share it with us and your fellow cyclists in the comments! 🚴♂
Don't wear padded shorts
Those canyon bikes are high $$$$ 😳
$16k+ australian dollars😳😳
Pain eventually goes away after a few weeks of long sessions. At this point you can just bike in your underwear if it's summertime.

“Most bike shops have a range of test saddles you can try.” Not in the US, they don’t, in my experience.
6:36 I think I will have nightmares from James applying the sniff test to his bibs. 😱 😁
I get iy in my bum bones. And burning of the bottom of my feet
😀😀😀😀😀
