"We don't interfere into other peoples or planets
Unless there's children crying"
Gets me every time
Absolutely. That's who the doctor is❤
Sums up The Doctor so well, they're all children to him
This is such an underrated episode, the ending always gets me weeping and sets up Eleven and Amy as my favourite TARDIS team.
I’ve always loved this episode since it first aired! The metaphor of the Last Star Whale and the ‘Beast Below’ poem really drove home that this is an entirely new, ‘Dark Fairy Tale’ era!❤❤❤
Yeah it's an episode I've tended to skip on rewatches but it's actually great.
I love the fact that Amy realized that about the Doctor on only her 2nd trip with him... but then, she had a long time to think about him as she was growing up, didn't she?
I see reactors getting upset at 11 for being angry with Amy. I think it was executed perfect though. Sets up Amy as a companion amazingly, and previews 11s darker side, which is one of my fav things about him
14:40 "Yes Queen" and you had no idea haha
This episode always makes me tear up when they are talking after she saved the starwhale
"What if you were that old... and that kind... and the very last of your kind? You couldn't just stand there and watch children cry."
I love that each new companion has a test that they have to pass to be worthy of being the Doctor's companion. They might not know what it is, and the Doctor might not know what it is, but we *all* know when they have passed.
This episode breaks my heart. That poor creature. It just shows that Amy is up to the task. “Nobody Human has anything to say to me today” is such a great dr moment. Pained and angry and heartbroken. But Amy finds the solution in the end.
Fun fact! The call used for this Whale was actually the same one used for the similar Whale in Torchwood. I always wondered whether it was meant to be the same creature. Both are whales, both alien species. Its possible I guess.
Maybe. I wouldnt use the call to make that assumption though, both shows skimp out on their sound effect budget for stuff like this. I could def see them being the same species though.
This is the episode that convinced me Matt Smith could pick up where David Tennant left off. Losing Tennant and Catherine Tate was hard for me. This one made me love the new pair. 10 will always be my favorite doctor, but 11 just gets better from here.
I love The Doctor and Amy Pond. I just love the relationship so much .
They are more friends.
@@mayotango1317 Yes, I know. Relationship doesn't imply romance.
7:43 A little Easter egg. Notice the orange sign which says ‘Magpie Electricals’? It’s from the episode ‘The Idiot’s Lantern’.
When I was younger I used to hate this episode, I didn't appreciate it and thought it was a wasted opportunity for a true scary horror themed episode like Season 4 episode 10 Midnight but as I got older and watched it again I appreciated it a lot more and understood the message more, it was a nice development episode with these new characters and the new doctor to help us get better used to Amy and The new Doctor and after finishing the season you really need episodes that just focus on the character of the Doctor in their new form and focus on the companion, their personality, morals etc.
Really can't wait till you reach episode 5
Even Steven Moffat considered it one of his worst stories. I disagree pretty strongly. I think it has lots of heart and is a great introduction to who this Doctor is.
The Doctor proclaiming he NEVER interferes in the affairs of other peoples and planets…. Does he HONESTLY believe ANYONE would believe that load of utter rubbish?! Have you met YOU, Doctor? 😒🤦♂️🙄
"Nobody Human has ANYTHING TO SAY TODAY!!!!". This is The Doctor at his most vulnerable
Perhaps inspired by the quote from William James (which also inspired Ursula LeGuin's award-winning short story, 'The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas'):
Or if the hypothesis were offered us of a world in which Messrs. Fourier's and Bellamy's and Morris's utopias should all be outdone, and millions kept permanently happy on the one simple condition that a certain lost soul on the far-off edge of things should lead a life of lonely torture, what except a sceptical and independent sort of emotion can it be which would make us immediately feel, even though an impulse arose within us to clutch at the happiness so offered, how hideous a thing would be its enjoyment when deliberately accepted as the fruit of such a bargain?
Yea I was gonna say this is very clearly a retelling of omelas
This was the first episode of doctor who I ever saw. It holds a very special place in my heart and I started tearing up just watching with you.😅
Im absolutely baffled that with all of the lives he touched, the Doctor isn't universally known through legends or anecdotes.
If anything, he should have fans all over the galaxy.
10.35: I can't get over the likeness of the narrator of the Starship UK Infovid to a late friend of mine. Even the voice. He was watching Doctor Who as well at the time and the likeness never came up in our meetings. He was a very bookish man, an ex-navy man and a fan of Marilyn Monroe. Every time I see this, I think it's Peter. I miss his "Hello Chief!" Rest in peace Old friend.
22:37 - very old, very kind, and the very very last 😢
A forgotten episode by many but one of my favourites. A cool premise with an excellently implimented moral quandry and perfect metaphor to the doctor
I need more than one episode every 3 weeks🥺
How far ahead on patreon are you?
I love this episode and it shows why Amy is the best companion in my mind. 😊
I think Amy is one of the most underrated in so many ways. Think when the Doctor first met her - It was the middle of the night, she was seven years old and she was alone because her Aunt was out. She got what it meant to be abandoned, alone, and having to be brave beyond her years. She got the Doctor. She was so empathetic.
This is one of my favourite episodes!
I adore Star Whale so, so much!
This era is my favorite Tardis crew. Don't get me wrong, the Tenth is fantastic, and Donna is a very close runner up of favorite companion. Rose and Martha were pretty good. But. This crew. I love them. Episodes like this one, and others you haven't seen yet are why.
I will never get enough of people reacting to my favorite show of all time. Enjoy the ride, Jay!
Yep, the star whale always makes me cry. Gah.
Amy saves the day!
I’m so excited for you to watch the next few series one of my favorite episodes is coming the Vincent van Gogh episode 😊 don’t worry no spoilers 😋 I love your reactions ❤keep up the great work 👍🏻 x
Oof Jay, if 11 and Amy already have your eyes sweating *now* you better hold on t' ya hat because this ain't nothing, NOTHING yet...
Man. I forgot how good this episode was.
hmm... I was predicting that Amy be the MVP for this one. But the Star Whale was obviously a major factor too.
Been following you since the third season. Had to go back and watch your earlier reactions before catching up on your 4th season reactions. Now that I'm all caught up I wanted to ask you, how has your feelings of Doctor Who changed since your first started. You're entering 11s era now. I want to know how you feel about Chris and David's portrayal, and your initial thoughts on Matt Smith :)
Been a whovian for 26 years so I'm excited to see your journey moving forward. Doctor Who is honestly my favorite live action series 😊
Love this episode ❤ We need less time between uploads 😂 Love your reactions
Great reaction! It is very interesting to see your reaction to the film Robocop 1987. This is a cool movie 👍🔥🦾
That was nice reaction, painted man! Love that episode.
I just love how The Doctor’s adventure with Queen Elizabeth the Tenth ends with a phone call from Britain’s GREATEST and most iconic Prime Minister, Winston Churchill! You are going to looooooove the next few episodes!! From Churchill and the Daleks to… well, I’ll let you find out! 😏🤫
I'd say this is one of the weaker episodes of series 5, which just goes to show how strong the series is as a whole.
Awesome reaction as always Jay. I'm not sure how far in front you are at the minute, but do you like the whole "Down a rabbit hole fantasy" element Steven Moffatt has brought to the show?
Amy : best girl ever !
We got to see a little fire from this Doctor.
11th doctor🔛🔝
Haha finally sure I always say this
Ah, Steven Moffat and his series arc "hints" that are about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face. "Look at the crack! LOOK AT IIIIT! CRASH ZOOM!" 🤣Kinda makes you miss Bad Wolf.
I think I prefer the Moffat approach to arc integration mainly because the RTD arc in series 1 barely affects any of the stories until the finale. I feel that the series arc Davies got right was series 3 because it changed the status quo throughout various episodes.
I absolutely love your Doctor Who reactions; unfortunately I cannot keep a subscription to your patreon because there really doesn't seem to be a schedule for these episodes, and being unemployed what little money I do have must be stretched and put to its best use. I will keep on checking in as I have been and subscribe again once you get to the halfway point of this series. You are the only reactor to Doctor Who that I actually look forward to seeing each and every reaction to, even the episodes of the show that I normally skip. I can't wait until you get through episodes 4 and 5, watching you react to those two are going to be epic. 🤍
