First shots: New FG-42 1st Model from SMG

- PLEASE NOTE: German paratroops originally dropped with only light weapons, and their rifles and machine guns were dropped separately in parachute containers. This was a terrible idea, as it led to the guns being lost, and left paratroops fighting with little more than pistols. The FG-42's purpose was to serve as a rifle and light machine gun that could be carrier directly by the jumping paratrooper instead of using arms containers.

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
Many years ago, SMG Guns introduced a reproduction FG-42 rifle, a semiauto version of the 2nd model as made by Germany during World War Two. After several more years of development, they have now shipped the first of their 1st model FG0-42 semi autos. There are several significant differences between the two - the 1st model was a milled receiver rifle with a stamped sheet metal stock, a very distinctively steep pistol grip, and a bipod mounted on the gas block. The 2nd model used a stamped receiver, wooden stock, bipod on the front sight block, and a few other differences.
Today I am trying out the new 1st model rifle. It is chambered for 8mm Mauser, and uses ZB-26 20-round magazines. I have been waiting a very long time for this rifle, and I'm very excited to finally have my hands on it!

I’ve never even considered the fact that firing a gun while descending with a parachute would cause you to spin. Just ruined a few cool movie scenes for me.
I mean assuming they use the two point of contact system there is less of a chance of spinning so maybe there is still some level of realism in those scenes still
Mauris I honestly can’t tell if you are responding to me or the first comment but in any case I was mostly talking about how in cases outside of this specific type of single point attachment parachute the spinning shouldn’t be an issue and that most of these yet to be specified cool movie scenes are provably still in the range of believability
Still not effective with two points of contact to the parac. but possible.
Well it's probably not nearly as bad with a two point parachute, and in most of the movie scenes i can recall they're shooting handguns. Less recoil = less spin. You probably won't be very accurate, and in most situations it's probably not worth it
ryo leo on civilian’s parachutes and drop altitude I would said it’s possible, but on military ones it is not, because on the static line drop you don’t have any control of the chute, the time falling is to short and the impact on the ground requires a good landing for you to don’t break anything, contrary to the civilian’s one where you can pretty much land walking
The fit-and-finish on that FG-42 looks incredible. I love this new era of lovingly obsessive reproductions of rare firearms. Also, wow Ian's building a lot of muscle.
Yeah, no one is shooting from the chute. The goal is to safely get on the ground as quickly as possible and begin maneuvering.
And you'd probably shoot your feet off.

Former 82nd Airborne guy here,
1. ALL combat static-line (where your parachute deploys by the simple action of you exiting the aircraft) jumps tend to be from a low altitude to reduce the amount of time you're in the air. If memory serves correctly, the most recent U.S. combat jumps (Grenada, Panama, northern Iraq) were conducted at something like 500' AGL. It's such a low altitude that even though everybody is jumping a reserve parachute, if you have a problem with your main, your reserve 'chute won't have enough time to fully deploy and save you.
2. Even though U.S. parachutes have two points of attachment to the harness, sometimes if you have a bad exit, your "risers" as they're called and parachute lines will get twisted up. It can be easily fixed by moving your feet and legs as though you were riding a bicycle, which causes you to spin. Another problem that's also a pain in the butt, is "oscillating" where you just swing back and forth underneath your parachute. I've experienced both of these problems with U.S. T-10D parachutes.

I know Ian covered it in a Q&A about a year ago, but IIRC, the only real review video on RUclips is from Larry Vickers. Be nice to see others take it for a spin. It's an intriguing concept, to use updated techniques to bring something considered outdated to a whole new audience.
If I recall correctly he did 2 videos on the Ohio Ordnance BAR, one covering the gun and one on the walking fire use of it. Maybe 8 years ago? His conclusion was he did not think it was practical, overly heavy with bad sights and ergonomics. But was impressed with the build quality from Ohio O, and recommended it for anyone interested in owning a BAR for fun reasons.
@@avocares I thought that was the traditional M1918 OOW that he highlighted, I could be wrong, though. Dang, now I'll have to dig through the video back catalogue to verify that. @@itatane Ah looking at it your right, it was a traditional model.
I think the grip was designed to have a lower profile and therefor less chance to snag on something while in the plane or in the air, just a wild guess.
Or when going thru the door.
Actually the reason is rather stupid, as it is hilarious and somewhat obscure. Hitler, in his INFINITE stupidity, insisted that WWI weaponry was all the frontline infantry man needed in combat. It was good enough for him, so its good enough for them. So, to prevent him from just hating the weapon when he inevitably tested it for approval, they made it have a grip like the KAR-98.
This is the same reason that it took till 1943-44 to get the STG44 into mainline manufacturing and eventually semi-standard issue.... hitler's complete arrogance and stupidity. Which, additional fun fact, made him insist that he knew tactics better than his generals... which is why he executed 84 out of the 126 german generals and field marshals that died during the war.... including Irwin Rommel who took a cyanide pill rather than have his family suffer.
Yeah, it looks to extend down just as far as the stock.

I believe the pistol grip was designed the way it was in order to keep it slim. Easy to draw out for the paratroopers. Also, probably so the pistol grip doesn't injure the paratroopers during their parachute landing fall. I was a paratrooper myself and that is the reason we jump with the forward assist on our M-4s, or the charging handles on M-249s and M-240Bs facing outward.

A german paratrooper jumps and hangs horizontally from a parachute(unlike other parachutes where you hang vertical) and upon landing were supposed to roll and tumble. Which is why they jumped with pistols only and their weapons were carried in seperate containers dropped along side them. While I have heard of paratroopers that stuck an MP40 between their shoulderstraps across the chest for the jump, I dont think I've heard seen the fg42 being mentioned as a rifle they'd carry like that. They werent supposed to so noone would have designed it to be fired while jumping anyways.

Wow, that Mozambique's reset is WAYYY too strong.
I saw that too...Its hard to spot the bullet splashes exactly, but I was thinking that maybe he was hitting the body and just the inertia of the hit was swinging the reset plate back some. I mean, he regularly uses this target for 9mm carbines, a 198grain 7.92 at like 2500fps hits much, much harder, ya know?
@@rickb1973 he shoots the 9mm from much closer, AND always seems to require multiple hits to reset there, too. Something's fucky with that particular target.
Edit: To add, he never seems to have any problem doinking the head *down*, only in resetting the head *up*. The head target is smaller than the reset.
@@Hansengineering But also harder to spot.
Could be completely wrong about this and it’s just a guess but is it maybe meant to simulate two to the chest and one to the head?
@@rickb1973 Yes I'm thinking the same thing. It's gotta be hits to the body that still knocks the plate a little bit backwards.

This grip makes the gun more compact. Maybe they thought it will be better for parachuting.
Looks very helpful when you're going prone, along with the side-mounted mag well.
German parachute troop doctrine was to jump without weapons, except for pistols for those who were issued one (officers, non-comms, certain other designated personnel). The other weapons were all packed into cylindrical crates that were dropped separately. One of the problems in Crete was that the initial landings were sans long-arms, no rifles, no SMGs nothing other than some pistols. For all the lore about the FG weapons, the vast majority of the use was sen when the Fallschrinjager fought as regular infantry on the Eastern Front. There are pictures of Fallschrimjagers equipped with FG 42s and STGs mixed in while being around German armored vehicles.
Ian is right. The steep angle of the grip is the same as K98 Mausers.
Perhaps they thought it less snaggy than a straight grip initially.
The real reason for the pistol grip on the original version was because they initially expected it to be replacing use of the mg34 among the squads that were to be deployed with it, filling the mg as well as the assault rifle role.
The grip is specific to it's stable and effective use in prone firing positions.
However the luftwaffe favored retaining use of the mg34 so they mainly refocused it as primarily an assault rifle.
You videos teach me to admire the guns and all technology behind their conception. Thank you Ian.
The fallschirmjäger jumped lightly armed (usually a handgun). Most weapons arrived in a parachute canister.

Nice combat shirt dude. Reminds my own when i was in readyness unit
Love the FG-42. Such an amazing rifle.
I'm a left handed german and i feel you Ian. I cant imagine shooting a bolt action rifle for right handed people in the field.
While I have been fortunate to acquire left handed bolt guns over the years, some of my first and ALL of my family heirlooms are righty. Shorter "carbine" lengths with lighter barrels work well. Also shorter cartridges.. (think mini mauser ie CZ 527 and rimfires) I have found two proficient methods to shoot. First is to keep the firing hand on the trigger but keep the support hand near the action for shooting fast. After firing the shot, slip your right hand up and pull the bolt. Be warned the bolt handle is coming at your face, but with short action guns this is not an issue. if a more precise shot is required, toss your right hand over the sling counterclockwise and ram it forward hard. to work the bolt crank the whole gun about 45* counterclockwise reach over the top with your left and crank it with authority. While both ways may not make a "mad minute" record, they can still be shot effectively enough. Never underestimate the power of a Lefty to overpower a right handed design. Keep the firearm solidly in your shoulder pocket. It is your third hand.

@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine The boss fight in the X-labs was the worst by far. The ones at the caves and the ritual sight weren't as bad but still *very* rough. But, for me personally, the Lopers gave me such a headache.
I got an advert for the Slap Chop on this video... is it 2008 again?
Didn't that guy get in trouble for slapping around a hooker?
earthaltar Yeah...apparently she didn’t love his nuts
@@weswolever7477 Lol.
Dude hits everything ... consistently. With no scope. Really cool.
I'm left handed, but because of my horrible vision in my left eye, I grew up learning to shoot right hand. I'm kinda glad I did.

2G-ACM when???
Folding tripod folding sights. I think the grip was sloped to reduce the chances of snagging parachute lines foliage etc.
I see some people pointing out Fallschirmjager did not drop with their gear as another reason the rifle would not be fired from the chute.
This was only true for Crete, with disastrous consequences-after which doctrine changed. The FG42 was in fact designed as a weapon that could replace both rifles and machine guns and could be dropped *with* individual soldiers, so they would never find themselves in a similar situation to Crete.

@Flat Bastard Engineering Channel not really, I suppose)
$5500 is too much for me,even though I’d really, really like one.
For $5500 it should be full auto.
For $5500 they should have a better website.
Fortunately I'm in a position to be able to afford one (good job, single) However I don't see how to order one do I have to contact them directly through email?
Try at least $250,000 for a full auto FG-42. More likely to pay closer to $300K -$400K honestly.
If you want a 5k automatic firearm look into an smg like the Mac 10. The FallschirmjägerGewher in select fire is practically a unicorn...
Low volume manufacturing = high per unit prices.
Pretty sure Ian has all but crashed SMG guns website. Good job.
It always feels good to come to this channel and be greeted with another left hand shooter, I don’t see a lot of them on youtube
Ian you are absolutely correct concerning German combat airborne operations! Additionally... 1) Since airborne forces are in the ‘attack’, they are legitimate targets while under ‘canopy’ IAW the Geneva Convention. In contrast, a pilot ejecting/parachuting from his aircraft, is not a legitimate target, as by leaving his crippled aircraft, he has taken himself out of the fight. 2) Jump altitude in combat is 400-500’ (as opposed to 1000-1100’ for peacetime training). In a low altitude combat jump, a reserve parachute serves no practical purpose as there is insufficient time & altitude for it to come into play, much less engage opposing ground targets. Offensive/defensive fire becomes the priority AFTER landing. LtCol. Y.R., USMC(Ret), former commander of 2dANGLICO, the Marine Corps largest airborne unit.
