Jason
newsted, rob is solid but jason has that fire in him. he owned it every night.
Geddy Lee.
Rob's a better player but Newsted live was a monster! and WAAAAAY better in the background vocals dept. Kirk and Rob sound terrible.
Robert, he is a better player, though both are/were not allowed to do shit on record, only CLiff was allowed and they will never allow someone to put their stamp on shit.

"We're off to Never Never land" does sound kinda corny
That’s when they were hangin with Michael Jackson 😆
"Heavy thoughts tonight and they aren't of snow white" (cheesy wah pedal lick plays).
That's total cheese factor there but I still love it.
It worked sold millions of copies so I guess being corny pays
Not really it was genuis, for me its a metaphor of just getting lost in the music it's a great opening song and clearly it worked its one of their biggest songs.
Well it is a song about nightmares. When do nightmare’s make sense and aren’t cheeseball?

Says every metal fan who was a fan of Metallica from Kill 'em All To Ride the Lightning to Master of Puppets and then to And Justice for all, we heard Enter Sandman and knew instantly, wow this band had just became a pop metal Radio band, because it is corny as hell and anyone who thinks it's not is a *recent* fan as of The Black Album, they are not original Metallica fans - those of us at the beginning made that band famous, there was no radio play there was only us buying albums and cassette tapes, going to their shows while MTV was playing Dokken and poison and selling us Glam Rock on the radio - we made Metallica big, so we know.
No offense to any new and recent fans, the band is ultra talented, just saying you weren't there at the beginning so you don't understand thrash metal, you understand when the band made it to the 90s and sold their music on the radio and became mainstream pop metal, that's how you know Metallica.
Enter Sandman is pop metal. Metal made nice for the mainstream pop culture. Think Game of Thrones season 7 - that's the Metallica you all discovered, Game of Thrones 'the books' is the Metallica we know.

That is a fantastic interview. FILLED with what I refer to as “RETROSPECTIVE INSIGHT” which is a perspective that only comes to those who get beyond the actual subject matter, incident, time frame or toxicity. A differing form of perception that usually only comes with time and distance. The true perception in hindsight is usually a wisdom that will only present itself to those that are looking for clarity. The instigating factor seems less important the further that time takes us away from the fractal circumstance. It seems, hopefully that is, all involved have achieved that 20/20 clarity of the past. That is the wisdom that leaves behind blame and brings along healing in it’s place. It has been 20+ years since the departure and it feels good to hear and see these parties all coming together.
I mean, this has all been common knowledge for a long time. Jason said everything he had to say in the Scuzz interview several years back. If anyone still has any lingering questions, just watch that whole interview. Echobrain is the easiest thing for people to attach a reason for departure to. It had much more to do with his growing painkiller addiction and medical issues - needing to rest and recover, but the rest of the band (mostly management) saw rest and recovery as lost opportunity and lost popularity. To them, taking a year off was career-suicide. They "made other arrangements" in James' words in order to stay relevant, which in retrospect is pretty sickening, but I understand it as well and can't say I blame them. I'm sure they all wish they could have handled it differently now.
Common knowledge for musicians
I agree they all should have rested for a couple years instead they pushed forward and made corny lyrics and horrible music they are just a mockery now they are bored with it and keep collecting money for their kids which isn't that bad of a thing but is horrible considering what they once were
Tbh James seems like a really self absorbed prick, for years saying "we didn't have the tools to deal with our emotions" while making his emotions the centre of the world.

Late to post. Loved Jason. I've seen Metallica live 5 times and Jason was awesome. You could tell he was having fun. He always interacted with fans.
Watching Metallica live in videos now; I can tell the shows are half as fun.
Jason gives off this energy when I see him "what would I do if I was in Metallica" "I would give it my all to help my favorite band keep going"
It may be corny but it was still a banger. And if you’re like me and you don’t ever listen to the radio, and pretty heavily curate your playlists so you don’t get burned out on songs… I’d say it’s still kind of a banger to this day 🤷♀️.
Exactly, people keep saying they should remove it from the setlist. If they heard it until they were sick of it is not Metallica's fault...
Having said that, IF the band is sick of it and want to give it a break I wouldn't mind, they have plenty of other great songs to play.
Nah man it’s way too overplayed. Like way way too overplayed. Even if you don’t play it much you’re still gonna get burned out. First 5 albums including garage days re-revisited are superior because it was thrash. James’ voice sounded so raw before the black album and when he blew his voice box out on “so what?” The black album just felt so slow.
@@RGK93 I don't mind when they play it at the concerts. It's the best time to take a piss break and grab a beer. No line ups in the bathroom when they are playing that tune.
@@Amadeus0317 it's overplayed because it's a universal banger lol
Like it or not, even as a massive metal fan, and as much as I love Metallica, not everyone is gonna get down to a song like Hit The Lights. That thrashy of a metal song is not for everyone. It isn't meant to be.
But when you throw on Enter Sandman, everyone knows it, and even country, rap, pop, jazz, and fans every other genre in between alike will be singing along and headbanging to it.
It's one of the few true heavy metal anthems that even people who don't like or even know of metal listen to and enjoy.
It has also introduced the genre of metal to many people who didn't know of it before and for that alone it deserves the credit and recognition it has rightfully gotten.
That shit is trash lol I'll listen to anything off Reload ( except memory remains and fuel) over Enter Sandman
Love this channel!
I get what Jason is saying about Enter Sandman. This is the song that got me into Metallica (yes I admit it - I was too young at the time to have been into metal in the 80s). But now days if I ever listen to the black album, I start at Sad But True. I've squeezed every bit of enjoyment of out Enter Sandman, and can safely say I've heard it enough.
If Metallica ever does a farewell tour I hope they can find a way to incorporate Jason into the shows. Never got to see him live and since he was my favorite member of the band it would be a treat if he rejoined. I think I've heard he can't physically keep up with that kind of music any more so it's probably not likely, but ya never know. Still such a shame they let him walk out the door and weren't able to fix the situation. It really never should have come to him leaving.
He's not wrong. Metallica has masterpieces and Enter Sandman is not one of them.
heavy thoughts tonight, & they aren't of snow white!
He IS wrong. And so are you.
i saw metallica a few times with jason and you got raw ferocious energy when he was on stage....now you get 3 hipsters and a crab walker
He’s right. And now I have to play that song at like every show (I play in a 90’s cover band).
Any Metallica fan since Kill 'em All or even Ride the Lightning knows this as a point of fact, it's not even an opinion for us at this point.
Think Game of Thrones season 7, that's the Metallica most people discovered in the 90s as mainstream pop metal.
Game of Thrones 'the books' is the Metallica we know, and Enter Sandman is a radio pop metal song made nice and safe for the mainstream.
VoiVod is what he was really wanting to do he said it a thousand times they were his favorite band and getting to play with them was the pentacle musically for him.
I'm subscribed, boys. I like what you have to say. And I agree that from a certain perspective "Enter Sandman" can be corny but you know, the riff checks out and I've always loved the song. I've always loved the video for it. It just worked for me. The semi running into the bed- sort of a Terminator 2 vibe in there. Nothing wrong with that stuff. I love Terminator 2!

Because Enter Sandman IS corny (no disrespect).
I don't think it's corny as much as it is "overplayed" and that's is how we feel about these kind of songs most of the times, especially if we know the band has tons of greater ones in their catalogue. It also has this AC/DC tempo and the catchiness required that made it work perfectly for the reason it was written for, to gain a greater audience and contribute to making the band Heavy Metal's No1 pop (literal meaning of the term) band. It has been many years since I've pushed the "play" button to this song to be homest, still like it though.
@Jason who cares
Everything after and justice for all is corny popmetal.
@Jason Excel, Suicidal, Beowulf, No Mercy, Evol are amongst the bands I like a lot, I'm mainly into hc/punk, crossover thrash and thrash metal. I've known about the "stolen riff case". Imo that's totally irrelevant with the debate of "Enter Sandman" being "corny". Furthermore that doesn't make "Sandman" a bad. Also with the exception of this riff the rest of the song is totally different than the one from Excel. I feel that the riff is mostly influenced by Danzig or Trouble, considering the whole songs' vibe and groove.
@@jeremywanner4526 🙌🍻💯 agreed
My 2 cents if anyone cares is this- AJFA was the last truly GREAT album they made while at the same time living up to what their name actually means.
Jason deserves far more credit than he's gotten for basically being the glue that held the band together after Cliff died.
One of the best albums they ever made was the $5.98 EP.... they've always been great at re-doing other people's songs and back in the day, that album became extremely scarce and was later re-issued because of high demand. I personally burned through at least 3 that I can remember. Oh, and by the way, I was lucky enough to have seen Cliff with Metallica at the Iowa Jam back in 1986 just months before the tragedy, I was only 13 at the time and I clearly remember the first thing out of James' mouth when they came on stage was "You wanna hear some F'n noise?!", and then broke out into "Battery", oh the good 'ol days!

Alot of musicians do other projects outside of their main band. That should be a good thing after all they're artists. Am glad they are fine now. Be nice if Jason do a couple projects with them. Have two bass players on a couple songs along with two guitar players. Be a interesting outcome. 🤘🏻✌🏻

That goes for any band that has big songs. Why is it different with Sandman vs Puppets? Both awesome songs and both huge songs for Metallica
@@brianstrutter1501 And to add to this. It’s your job! I get tired of doing my job too. However, I show up and do it. And guess what, I don’t make a pile of money to do it. I think the song is a good song and alot of people can relate to the lyrics. Everyone has had nightmares. The only thing wrong with the song is it's been overplayed for 30 years and it gets old after a while. When it was new it was awesome.

100% correct. It's exactly what I thought when it came out.
Metal fans of today don't understand how much of a shock to the metallica fans who had been there from day one the black album was ,
When the last album was serious vicious thrash ( and justice for all) , a lot of people walked away ,Metallica became radio metal after that .
I didn't get into Metallica until the late 90's in high school. I was already aware of them by the early 90's from a couple of friends who were big into AJFA . I was vaguely familiar with Enter Sandman from its time on the radio, although I didn't know (at the time) who had made the song.
As someone who likes most of Metallica's catalog but prefers RTL, MOP & AJFA, I can imagine the disillusionment that would have taken place in '91. Had I been born a decade earlier and gotten into the band in the 80s instead, I would have likely been among those who walked away too. Overall I consider myself lucky to have had the perspective of someone who was walking _towards_ the band - Long after the "sell-out" dust had settled.
I bet man I am 13 currently just got into metal last year and I listen to the previous albums and I was just amazed on how thrash metal it was and I got to the black album having high hopes that it will be just like the others and I was honestly disappointed what happend after “justice for all”?

Metallica could not have picked better bass players than Jason and Rob after Cliff died. Jason gave every grain worth of himself to those performances. Same thing for Rob too when I saw Metallica in late 2008 during the Death Magnetic tour. Thank God we at least have Cliff on video. I just commented this above!
Why can’t they just have two bassists? There’s really no con to it. Rob won’t have to get kicked out, and Jason will be back, and we all know, everybody loves Jason.
It can be called corny and mainstream by some metal fans, but I will say it was the perfect gateway to get into the more heavier stuff and start learning more about metal. For me Ride The Lightning is their masterpiece, but I’d be lying if I said the Black Album didn’t grow on me after a while. My Friend of Misery should have been an instrumental tho
The problem is most Metallica fans had been with the band for 4 albums, and this gateway album for new fans, felt like a huge step backwards for original fans.
It would be like the next Meshuggah album sounding like Puddle of Mudd.

I feel like many early Metallica fans are so bitter about anything Enter Sandman forward since that was the tour where they really became popular.
Every band as old as time goes through the cycle of old fans hating the "new big radio pop single" that turns their favorite band into a household name.
There’s a difference between bitter and not supporting radio rock. If that’s your thing then I get it but others prefer the energy the band had with Cliff

I saw Metallica twice in the 90s, Jason was the heart of the show each time, pure energy. When he says he gave everything, he's not lying. metallica without jason is still godly and rob is proving himself a monster amongst men but jason in the 90s was on another level. his energy in live shows is incredible. its hard to pick between jason and rob because they are both cool people and amazing bassists who honestly didnt get to shine in albums as much as they couldve.

“And a Baked Apple Pie! Yea!!”

I liked Enter Sandman. Probably one of the few songs, I liked on that album. And I have been a fan of Metallica since Ride The Lightning.
