Yeah, that's absolutely the plot of Oracle Year One: Born of Hope. (Plus her rematch with the Joker in BoP 124.) That story literally starts with her in the hospital bed, telling Batman "The Joker didn't care about me. He only attacked me to get at you. Then I heard you two had a laugh together. What were you laughing at--me??"
Years ago I explained Babs' injury and reinvention to a cowoker who enjoys superhero films, and she was like "Wow, why don't they make a movie of that?" "I know, right? But instead we're getting a standalone Joker origin movie, AND Birds of Prey with Harley instead of Barbara." I recorded an audio drama of Wonder Woman's first appearance for her 80th anniversary--maybe I should do one of OY1, since Warner Bros. will never have the spine.
