Just found one of these today for $35 at Goodwill, fully functional. Year ago found a CX777ES for $15 at a flea market, again no problems. So they're floating around for cheap for the patient.
I recently bought one of these at a Goodwill Outlet, so it was kinda abused when I got it. And ....it didn't work. It would just go around 3 times counter clockwise then read "please wait" forever. I found your video and my problem seemed somewhat similar to yours. But it was late so I took one last look before calling it for the day. I wanted to look at that guide wheel on mine to get an idea of how yours might have come off, cause it seemed rather improbable. I found my guide wheel snugged up against the disc sensor! After restoring it to its rightful place the machine worked fine...clockwise, counter clockwise...found the disc, played it. Thanks for the help.
I discovered that when working on the unit, with the cover off, the super bright lights in my garage and workshop affects the optical sensor malfunction also direct bright sunlight when working outside. With the cover on, it worked normal.
Thanks 12voltvids! My mega-changer began to act erratic after I removed several discs. It would turn on; make a long noise; carousel would not turn. I also have the CD mega-changer; experienced the same problem. Discovered that it was the belt; accessible from the rear on the CD changer, but, I had to remove the top on the DVD changer to reattach the belt; problem solved. I've owned both since 2006, without any problems. So, I'm glad that I clicked on your video, and decided to to remove the top to have a look!
It does SACD as well - that's pretty cool. I had a Sony 300 disc changer which I sold. They are just so physically huge that sometimes you can't get them into a normal sized shelf.
My CD-400 carousel started rotating endlessly, alternating between faster and slower rotation. I knew nothing but assumed there was an optical sensing system that wasn't working. This video clarifies a lot. However, I am wondering if it might be possible that the sensor under the carousel might be occluded by dirt or debris that might have accumulated over the decades (my unit may date from the 90s) rather than a dimming LED. Unlike a hand held remote, this sensing system is designed to work at a very short, fixed distance. This video provides enough information for me to attempt a repair. I know the video is 6 years old in late 2022, but it is pure gold for me. I have spent hours searching for this info to no avail. Thanks a lot. Hope the cats are alive and well.
if it was me,i would've gave it back unrepaired.I don't have a clue as to what to suspect.Thumbs up sir..keep up the troubleshooting videos coming.I very much enjoy it.
Fascinating watching you fixing these items,. Have Sony 300 Disc player running on 110V ac system (Canada). I ran it on 230/40 ac system using a transformer here in Malta and worked perfectly for many years. Mistakenly I plugged it in a 230/40 wall receptacle and it went dead. Looked like the CD changers own transformer obviously burnt out. Can`t use anymore . Wish I can find new transformer to replace the bunt one but I live in Malta and it is impossible here to find anyone that can fix my unit.
I'm sure I could find one that would work on it. Might need a couple to get the different voltages used but am am sure one could be found that would get it running.
Guys like you are getting very hard to come by!! Any chance you are near Tampa Bay?? lol.. I have 2 AVR's I'd love to fix. An old Carver that my daughter smoked on me while I was out and a Harman Kardon that won't power up. The Carver is from the mid 80s and was really clean sound and the HK was ok to pretty good. I just bought a SONY AVR and 400 disc player. The receiver sounds like crap with my HK speakers and the 400 disc player needs all the belts. They were both NIB, but stored for many years. One of the easily seen belts was melted into the larger pulley and the other had just snapped. The door won't open on it's own, so I'm betting it's also toast.. I think I'll check the rollers as well since the belts look melted. The plastic wheel retainers are possibly junk as well.. My old 6-pack magazine CD player was my favorite for decades, but it bit the dust a few years back and it broke my heard.. Now it's hard to find anything with Spotify and others killing the market.. I won't use them. It is not a PLUS for the common man. Just another money sucking deal from those with money pushing us to want more of their crap and pay for it.
man that thing was crazy expensive but still looks cool! Sounds like it has a brake for the motor so it can exchange disks faster. Would be nice to have one with a lighted glass top!

The replaced LED didn't seem much brighter than the original (though obviously it was enough to make it work again), couldn't it just be dust build up on the photo detector? I had a similar problem on a VCR that wouldn't stop when the clear leader past the sensor all it needed was a cleanup as it was "blinded" by the dust.
One of the first things I did was blow any dust out with my compressor. Didn't show that because it had no effect on the outcome. Did that before I changed the emitter.
my 955 just started acting up 6 15 24 . had it for along time not complaining here. mine is keeps saying reading or please wait.. door doesnt open and tray wont move so time to dig into it. if i cant get it working itll make a great target..

Hi there we have 400 disc sony changer in for repair slightly different fault where by if you no disc's in it the carousel will constantly go through all 400 locations and load at every single disc location and do this until you power off it would seem the machine thinks it has 400 disc's in and yet there is not one in it all. I think the sensor that detects there is a disc in each slot as it goes by is sending out a high output telling the machine disc's are present.
How they typically work is a China infrared light beam into the edge of the disc and there's a photo transistor on the opposite side and as the disc goes past it detects the pulse of light passing through the disc. So straight light that's able to reach the sensor can cause this problem. Typically the vitamining dial that shoots the light beam out does not point directly at the sensor but points at an angle so that light gets refracted through the disc itself but if there's no disc in place the beam from the emitter doesn't reach the detector

Funny, after watching your video, I put an offer in on one of these (the 985). Listed as not working, for parts - unit is shutting down a couple seconds after power up. Does that sound like a power supply issue to you?
My Sony compact disc player CDP-CX400 no longer works after transporting it over 800 miles. The error message says "table error" So I removed all the CDs, and followed the directions on the Sony web site, and it still does not work, with same message. A Sony phone consultant said to send it to United Radio for repair, which I hesitate to do. Any ideas??
My DVP-CX995V quit responding to the remote. I can see the infrared light come on on my iPhone in camera mode. Is it the unit or the remote. How do I determine which? Thanks
Answer clean the lens, you have to remove the cover and clean it with a swab and you must use lens liquid you cannot use a different liquid such as water or perfume
I have one of these love it. But recently there is no output coming from the player. Hooked it up to my TV and then my Bose SoundTouch system - can get either to get anything coming out of the player - any suggestions??
Cats are a pain in the ass some times. One climbed up on the top shelf and knocked box that contained 5 Sony lavaliere microphones I had up for sale down, breaking 2 of the plastic storage boxes. Most of the stuff I get in I try to sell off after repair, at least the stuff that is worth money. For example the 16mm projector that was featured a week or so ago should be out the door this weekend. That giant 32" Sony tube TV that had the bad degauss thermistor. Yup found a home for that one too. Looking for a home for the VP2000 3/4" player. Someone will take it eventually. All this old stuff gets a new home eventually. Much of it I just give away as I need the space.
I doubt they are damaged, just the storage boxes, the catch that holds 2 of them closed snapped off, so the box will need to be held closed with a rubber band. Reduces the value a little. Have no idea what I am going to sell them for anyway. Have to do research and see what they have been going for.

Im supprised it managed to select a disk at all, that sensor seems to be the only thing telling the unit absolute slot position, Im amazed it works so well. The disk waving procedure seems a bit odd, i would of expected a smooth rotation of the whole wheel and where the two sensors blip would be a disk. But its ok now, so back it goes :-( :-(. Needs deeper feet, thats the reason for the caster pop out.
If you move the units full of discs bad things happen. These 3 were rattling around inside. That's why the top was already removed before the video starts, because I had to remove the loose discs before plugging in or I would have been picking pieces of broken discs out. And yes I did see that happen.
Speaking of discs, and these types of megachangers, there's a version of this megachanger that can play Blu-Rays as well. I saw 300 and 400-disc variants of it.
is there an operational amp chip which controls the brightness of the infra-red led like what would be used in a laser module to stop the laser diode from burning out.
I have a 400 changer. It will grab the disc but it won't turn and when it returns the disc to the carousel, it makes a clunking sound. Can you shed some light? I noticed that there is a white disc on the side that is very loose and doesn't hold the cd. Is there a way to tighten it?
I have this same model that I got a year ago on Ebay. 2 weeks ago I started to have a problem whereby the disc will load, the menu will display on the TV screen, but when I go to select an episode or movie, it stalls out, then rotates to the next disc. At first it was intermittent, now it does it all the time. Mechanically the loading mechanisms all seem ok, but no video will play . Any ideas or where I can get this repaired, or is this something I can do myself? Thanks
Wow 400 disks, that's amazing, never saw one like it. But can the system gives you any identification about the disks on the tray? I'm torn between wanting a unit like this and thinking about the hell that would be to keep track of what's inside haha.
@@Giofergom sorry so long to msg back... I've obtained a 2nd one of these units since. Love them! But also added the 400 disc Sony Bluray changer... such awesome pieces of equipment!
Can I run something by you? This unit just arrived to me and the issue is press power button, it turns on, but then shuts off a couple seconds later. Service manual says to check voltages on main connector on power supply. I'm getting correct voltages on every pin except one - I'm supposed to get 3.3v, I only get 1.8v. Traced it back to IC401 (a tiny regulator on the backside of the power supply board). Input pin voltages are fine, but one pin on the output is, as you guessed, only putting out 1.8v where it is spec'd for 3.3v. Do you think this is probably the reason for the shut down?
Its either the regulator is bad, or something is loading it down. Does it get hot?If so I would suspect that something is loading it down, if not then the regulator itself is probably bad.If you look at my TASCAM DA40 repair that is what was wrong with it. It would turn on and come up with MECHA COMM ERR, and it was a bad 5 volt regulator that was at fault.
So, I installed the new regulator and checked all voltages on the socket and all were perfect. I'm getting my 3.3v on pin 11, so I reinstalled the power supply and fired it up. It came to life and for the first time, the display said "Sony DVD" (which it wasn't doing before). Stayed on for about 5 seconds and the shut itself off again. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!! That's probably as far as I can take this. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it, or if you have any hankerings to have a look at it for a video, I could ship it off to you. Thanks.
Hi there I have the same exact DVD changer but mine when the DVD get load is spin for like one second and then change the next DVD and then do the same thing over and over.. what do you think it is
As an early subscriber I watched a lot of your video's. I enjoy them a lot. Of course I noticed you're using a Variac. You once mentioned in another video that it was a safety precaution, But are you aware a Variac is not an isolation transformer? It is an auto transformer with just a single winding. Basically it is a big, high current wirewound potentiometer. Using a Variac you are by no means isolated from mains power!
Duh. My variac is there only for voltage control, so if I get an intermittent I can vary the input voltage to see if it is a regulation fault. The variac is plugged into a 800 watt isolation transformer that is mounted under the bench. The isolation transformer comes on when I turn on my bench power, and the switch on the variac I use to control a separate power bar that I can set the voltage. If you watch the video test bench safety, you will see the isolation transformer.
There is a belt that opens the door. It becomes soft and decayed. You can get a new belt, just change the others(3 total) while your at it. Videos are on youtube.
I have the same unit.I recently moved and did not take the nearly 400 disks out.I turned it on and it turned off.i OPENED IT UP AND SEVERAL DISKS WERE OUT OF PLACE.i TOOK THEM OUT.Now it turns on but does not play.It turns off after a couple minutes and displays C 32 00.Can someone tell me how to make it work?It worked perfect before the move.Thanks.
I have a CDP M555ES 400 disc changer that operates perfectly for 20 to 40 minutes but then it gets stuck when it attempts to change to the next disc. On the display it keeps scrolling through the disc numbers, but the carousel is not turning. This continues until I turn the unit off. I can turn it back on and it will operate perfectly for 15 to 30 minutes when it again gets stuck. Do you have a solution for this? Thanks in advance for any help.
TV shows. You can load many seasons of TV shows in this thing and never have to get up and load a disc. It's great for people like me who watch legacy TV shows and movies.
I have over 2000 DVDs from 15 yrs of buying them back in the day. Before they made Blu-ray, so they are nice for the video library person. I actually have 3 of these I bought them when they first came out in 2006. Recently one will not recognize the disc and I can't find a new lens, anyone now where I can get a replacement?
@@Stefs72vette But those must be bog standard DVD drives in there, you know which one it is? There is a dude on Ebay in Germany from whom I bought four CD, not DVD laser units, the oldest player is from the mid 90s, and the most expensive one is for a 15K transport, so I guess he can organise all sorts of shit. This is his shop, if you want to drop him a line: www.ebay.de/usr/www-musi24-de?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754
some codes are in the manuals for the 985 amd 995. C 32 The front cover automatically opens and the player enters standby mode. ,Check that there is nothing wrong inside the rotary table, such as a fallen disc. After you have checked the inside of the rotary table and resolved any possible problems, press PLAY.
That error is for the wheels the carousel spins on. You can see the white posts for the three wheels from the bottom of the unit. A post might not be locked in place. I have seen another video where they will just glue the foot back in its correct placing instead of taking the unit that far apart. good luck.
Would it be easier if I can find the entire board with a bright infra light? It looks like your method involves soldiering which is a very weak point for me.
Its a piece of junk. I sent mine to sony twice and just kept breaking down. Oh and for some reason it will lose all youre info on the dvds you put in. The worst of worst.
Do you know where I can buy a replacement lens for this? I keep getting a cannot play error. The disc will turn but not for long. Any help would be very much appreciated!!!

Any experience changing the belts in the rear of the box. I have two and both need the belts put back in the pulleys.
I have one of these love it. But recently there is no output coming from the player. Hooked it up to my TV and then my Bose SoundTouch system - can get either to get anything coming out of the player - any suggestions??
Seems that when it stops spinning the discs flop into each other, think that would that cause scratches over time?
I have the Sony M555ES 400 disc player and the Blue light in the front keeps flashing and won't play a CD any idea what it could be
I have a 995v with a strange problem
It won't read disc numbers 95 thru 105
Any suggestions
This is one nice player!!! Also plays SACD's!! You don't see that to often anymore...
@12voltvids, DVPCX995V powers up, but door never opens with message “Please wait”. Ideas?
interesting. The cats are an added bonus !
Much of it I just give away as I need the space.
oh yes, that's a cat! lol but that's a shame gear was damaged that someone needs. I have suffered a loss.....just not as costly as those mic's
I doubt they are damaged, just the storage boxes, the catch that holds 2 of them closed snapped off, so the box will need to be held closed with a rubber band. Reduces the value a little. Have no idea what I am going to sell them for anyway. Have to do research and see what they have been going for.

The price we pay for what they give us. :)
I have a CDP CX355 that needs a part, accentuating(sp) arm or lever. It loads the disc to the player?
mine just up and jammed hard! im not fixing it bc for under 20 i can another at goodwill these range from 10 to 25 bucks..why get annoyed?
Im supprised it managed to select a disk at all, that sensor seems to be the only thing telling the unit absolute slot position, Im amazed it works so well.
The disk waving procedure seems a bit odd, i would of expected a smooth rotation of the whole wheel and where the two sensors blip would be a disk.
But its ok now, so back it goes :-( :-(.
Needs deeper feet, thats the reason for the caster pop out.
U got a bold lil helper
interesting player one thing though would all the cds fall out if it were turned upside down with them in here?
If you move the units full of discs bad things happen. These 3 were rattling around inside. That's why the top was already removed before the video starts, because I had to remove the loose discs before plugging in or I would have been picking pieces of broken discs out. And yes I did see that happen.
Speaking of discs, and these types of megachangers, there's a version of this megachanger that can play Blu-Rays as well. I saw 300 and 400-disc variants of it.
yes, can tell from experience
is there an operational amp chip which controls the brightness of the infra-red led like what would be used in a laser module to stop the laser diode from burning out.
No, just a current limiting resistor.
what kind of infrared led did you use? which angle and which wavelength? or brightness?
I have a 400 changer. It will grab the disc but it won't turn and when it returns the disc to the carousel, it makes a clunking sound. Can you shed some light? I noticed that there is a white disc on the side that is very loose and doesn't hold the cd. Is there a way to tighten it?
mark did you ever get answer to this? Im having the same issue
The white disc is normally floating around. The other problem sounds like you need to replace the laser assembly. Problem with laser board.
Yes. Has a standard old school keyboard input on the front. You can edit all the titles for each disc....
@@flysolo9878 Damn that's awesome! Thanks for the info
12voltvids No heat at all. I'm going to watch your video and order a new one. It's one of those ridiculously tiny SMD regulators.
Thanks.
Hi there I have the same exact DVD changer but mine when the DVD get load is spin for like one second and then change the next DVD and then do the same thing over and over.. what do you think it is
Soon you will have the 400 disc Playstation.
There are variacs with two windings that also act as an isolation transformer. I have one of those.
Do you have brand/type?
It's the type TST 280/6, made by RFT in the GDR.
Thanks a lot for explaining
Why exact unit has stopped working
Is there anyway possible I could ship you mine unit for repair?
A cute cat you got there...
Great video as always. I love the cats. I've a few pairs of them myself haha
A DVD player, huh? You could fit a whole library of -porn- your favorite movies in there.
I doubt that many use it as a DVD player. As far as movies go I bet my DVD player had seen less than 30 in the entire time I have owned it.
I want one since I just got 600 cds off of ebay for 70$ - amazing how they've become worthless
I have a sony dvp-CX985V 400 Disc/Dvd the sliding door doesn't open. Any suggestions?
There is a belt that opens the door. It becomes soft and decayed. You can get a new belt, just change the others(3 total) while your at it. Videos are on youtube.
I have the same unit.I recently moved and did not take the nearly 400 disks out.I turned it on and it turned off.i OPENED IT UP AND SEVERAL DISKS WERE OUT OF PLACE.i TOOK THEM OUT.Now it turns on but does not play.It turns off after a couple minutes and displays C 32 00.Can someone tell me how to make it work?It worked perfect before the move.Thanks.
Lesson learned. Remove all the disks before you move it. Likely a plastic part has broken in the disk loader.
@@12voltvids I just took all the disks out of it.The center belt was all twisted up and broken. Can I purchase one from you?Thank You.
@@thomasmurphy3830 I don't have any spare parts. I have to order parts as I need them.
I have this same unit, love it but it gets 3 worn out belts just like all of these changers do in this family of cd/dvd players.
Hello There Mr. Guy. My name is Zackery Luke Langfitt and tomorrow I want you to have a video about the Sony disc explorer 400 DVP 985 please.
Thanks for your help .... Great bro.
ok, so this is a shot in the dark, but do you know where i could find the dvd optical reader for one of these?
Try kpcomponents.co
I have a CDP M555ES 400 disc changer that operates perfectly for 20 to 40 minutes but then it gets stuck when it attempts to change to the next disc. On the display it keeps scrolling through the disc numbers, but the carousel is not turning. This continues until I turn the unit off. I can turn it back on and it will operate perfectly for 15 to 30 minutes when it again gets stuck. Do you have a solution for this? Thanks in advance for any help.
I would check the drive belts. It sounds like their stretching out and slipping.
Where can I buy the laser light as mine is weak so CD is not being detected.
Bravo ! Super !
What if they cd/ dvd isn't spinning at all.
i have one of these players ,,, my problem is that it wont play dvd's anymore,, but will play music disk .. any ideas ?
Could be the red laser for DVD is toast. CD uses an infrared laser.
This player isn't much bigger than the 200 disc changer and appears to have fewer moving parts.
thank you a 1000 times
I just got one and have a 300 disc one that says no disc when there's disc's in it
I have a 300 disc unit in that I need to work on either today or tomorrow I think I'll get on that one
Who are the customers for something like that? I can understand 400 audio CDs, but movies?
This is his shop, if you want to drop him a line:

I’m getting a C32 00 on the screen any suggestions or Help?
some codes are in the manuals for the 985 amd 995.
I have seen another video where they will just glue the foot back in its correct placing instead of taking the unit that far apart.
good luck.
mine wont perform an all shuffle with all discs any ideas?
Cool piece... heaven forbid the logic circuit gets confused and starts rotating the platter while a disc is playing!
Awesome fix.
Where does this console was made?
You even have a Blu ray version.
👍👍😎✌️
just one question does the basement smell like cat pee?
My 300 disc Sony loads a disc bt will not read it or spin
I don't even think I have 400 DVDs
Since we were into the new century, almost all Japanese electronics sooner or later turns out of functionality! And seems no one knows why?!
Aww u brought some furry friends
wow
You can fix everything.
I have one for sale!
I have 3 200 disk changers. Got all 3 for free.
@@12voltvids Yes, agreed - gave mine to Goodwill - not sure if anyone wanted to fix it - it was not loading the CDs.
