A DRAMATIC LIGHT AND SHADOW on a face with Acrylic colors in a realistic style on paper. Acrylic paint usually dries fast. To overcome this challenge I am using a fine mist of water to keep the paint moist longer. I have elaborated my techniques of blending and shading using acrylic with water as the only medium. No retarder is used for this painting process.
I have started this painting with a clear coat of Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre to cover the initial sketches of the face. Then I establish some of the darkest areas like hairs. I have applied many thin layers to achieve the desired effect of the skin tone. Most of the blending is done with dry brush technique with minimal water on the palette.

What do you use for a mixing palette?
I usually use a piece of canvas vertically as a color mixing palette. Nothing else. Sometimes I use plastic plate as my palette. Thank you for watching 😊

It depends on the situation. I usually spray water.

Sometimes I tend to over blend the colours and become very scared to add colours. What can I do?
