Well said, there are a few but the editors don't stand up for them so much now. Ian Hislop as editor of Private Eye is one who does stand with investigative journalists and I do respect him but he's one of the few.
I am reading Rob Burley's book which is very interesting. Walden helped with writing a speech for Thatcher days before the 1983 election, which is wholly unacceptable for a journalist to cross the line like this. When the famous interview took place in October 1989 Walden understood his reputation was on the line given the criticism he had received for being too soft and sympathetic to Thatcher in previous interviews. She misjudged his competitiveness in the interview- ultimately it was her or him and he determined he had to be tough. They never spoke again.
I didn't really see him as Savile when it was announced that he was playing him, but he was superb in the role. He's a real transformative actor and a great mimic, so I'm highly optimistic.
For whatever reason before watching this I thought the title 'Brian and Maggie' would be alluding to the Hillsborough tragedy, from the perspectives of Thatcher and Brian Clough!
Brian Walden was an excellent interviewer. Nobody who put themselves forward or was asked was ever under the illusion that the interview would be a " walk in the park". There's no need for this drama, layering someone's else's take on a programme filled out with a semi fictitious backstory. Just repeat it & then discuss it.
@Steve-gc5nt the mess were in can be traced back to her policies. Selling off national assets is a prime example destroying our manufacturing capability and focusing on low paid service industry, destroying communities, using North Sea oil revenue to pay unemployment benefit to the millions of unemployed she created, selling off council houses and no it allowing councils to build replacement properties, etc.
@GilleanFreire What did you think of the previous Labour government removing all milk from Secondary schools?? Couldn't make up a childish rhyme with the words Wilson and milk??
@@stevebaker6149 You must be very young, it was the people protesting marching through the streets of London shouting ‘Thatcher, Thatcher, the Milk Snatcher - Out, Out, Out!’
I liked Frost/Nixon, although it did play and loose with the facts. But yeah, I'm getting a little bit tired with dramas like this going over the same old ground and dumbing it down for modern audiences.
She's also physically wrong for Thatcher - and way too old. Walter is 74 and Thatcher was still in her 50s when she left office. She actually looks as old as Thatcher did when she died in her late 80s.
Coogan couldn't hold a candle to Walden. I suppose in this day and age, a regional accent with a speech impediment would be unacceptable to the woke-stapo for some damned reason or another.

Love her but I’m not sure she’s far too old to play Maggie and completely the wrong build. The voice isn’t there. How I wish we could move away from Thatcher.
My absolute first thought when a certain type of person says "Well, why isn't there a White History Month?" As if they don't have white history coming out of their ears. Why didn't they just repeat the interview and then get historians to discuss it and put it into context. It would be lot cheaper and more accurate
Agree!
Yes - that is actually the better idea. It's up on YT for people who do want to see it.
Great idea, while you're at it why don't we just scrub every single film from the history of the planet and close all the theatres too
@@tomearle4599 well if that's what you want to do then go for it. It's a bit extreme and no one that is calling for it though.
Where would the fun be in that.... jeez... do you not understand art?
I never realised Brian Walden had the same accent as Bruce Forsyth ! “Good game Margaret, Good game!”
“Give us a twirl, Maggie!”
For those of us who grew up with Walden, his accent was as DISTINCT as Thatcher's. Coogan isn't even trying.
Yeah - I noticed that. It's odd considering he is such a good mimic(he did voices for "Spitting Image" in the past) and good at accents.
The actress playing Thatcher doesn't have her voice/accent down either.

Supposed to take place in 1989, yet looks like they set it in the early 70s.
it's the colour grading and the trailer titles. production design looks '89, if a bit stuffy for the period.
I imagine some of it is set in the 70s, showing how they met etc

The actress who played Thatcher in Coogan's Saville drama was exceptional. Why on earth didn't he go for her again???
Because he’s not the casting director! Or producer!
Gillian Anderson really nailed her in The Crown
I can’t see Coogan as Brian Walden at all. That might change if I watch the entire movie.
