    Wanted to mention at the end of it, Maraad isn't seeking Vengeance this time around. He's seeking Atonement. He's a bit of a death seeker in that to him, if he gives his life up ensuring that no other innocents are killed then he can die happy. Since he really feels the weight of the fact that his vengeance at the Siege of Shattrath led to the deaths of innocents that had been relying on him to protect them.
    So now he tries to Atone by putting himself in harms way as a bulwark no matter what may happen to him so long as he can protect others.

      I still didn't like that angle. I hoped that his Draenor counterpart would die for Yrel, and Prime Maraad would guide *her* away from the path of vengeance. Instead we got him dying, and Yrel taking up the mantle of some sort of zealous dictator. Would have preferred that she returned to our timeline to build an interesting female draenei hero. They could have used Nobundo or better yet, Akama to fill the role she ended up filling on Future Alternate Draenor.
      EDIT: Rather, I should say I didn't like its execution. I was fine with him seeking atonement.

    Ah, timeline shenanigans. :)
    To put it very simply:
    Maraad is from “our” timeline, where the orcs of Draenor A drank demon blood that amped their bloodlust up to 11. They kill a bunch of draenei, invade Azeroth, and eventually Draenor A is torn apart by magical portals and becomes Outland.
    The premise of Warlords of Draenor is that Garrosh from our timeline goes back in time and change things. So now the orcs do not drink the demon blood. Enter Draenor B, the AU version. The orcs, relying on technology instead, still invades our Azeroth, because Garrosh is just Like That. ;)
    Also, fun fact, the orcs are the gnomes of Draenor. They are the smallest intelligent beings there.
    (I don’t count podlings as intelligent beings, merely sentient, and afaik the sporelings didn’t become a thing until the Zangar Sea was drained and became marshland after Draenor A was torn apart.)

    • @7VNC7

      They are descendant from the Ogers, thats why they enslaved them.
      Sooo.. this is really odd way to compare the two races. While you are not wrong. Orcs and Gnomes have nothing alike, nothing comparable and still there is this minor fact.

    • @7VNC7
      @7VNC7 3 года назад +2

      Ill go a little more in depth about the story:
      Garrosh, who was fighting the Pandarians in the videos before, and they imprison him in the end(he is son of Grommash, the Iron will orc), escaped* and messed up with some time magic. He reopened the green portal, from the Burning Crusade cinematic with Illidan(the guy with horns, wings and green tattoos), which is actually a portal to Draenor. When he opened it he used time magic to open it 35 years in the past. Just before the Orcs became corrupted with Demon Blood and start their invasion on Azeroth. So he prevented them from getting corrupted, but on the other hand he corrupt them with technology from our timeline and with personal vendetta against Azeroth ...ish.
      I hope you gonna watch the ingame cinematics in this expansion, they are nice and you gonna see how Maraad(he is actually the one from the Burning Crusade cinematic, the amethyst hammer guy) actually redeem him self, which for me was an epic video. And much more about the history of the Orcs and Draenei.

    Another cool detail was that when Kilrogg did see his own dead, the flags of the Horde and Alliance were either side of him (because you as the player get to go kill him as a boss at some point).
    And in the game, when you kill him he says the same line "at last, this was the death I saw". Whereas if you fail and he kills you, he says it wasn't the death he saw.
    Also, you should react to the in-game cinematics for Warlords of Draenor! Warlords of Draenor was when they REALLY upped the quality of them, and that continued throughout the expansions after; Legion, BFA and now Shadowlands.

  • @hyrelia
    @hyrelia 3 года назад +4

    Warlords of Draenor has a really funky story- because as you said with Maraad, he's not changing the past, except that he kind of is. Because the Draenor that is currently invading is actually a pocket dimension from the past. In our present, Draenor was destroyed many years ago and turned into a shattered, floating landmass called Outland. However due to a lot of complicated lore reasons involving Bronze Dragons (the kind that can control time), a version of the past essentially became connected to the present, giving us access to Draenor once again (plus a lot of the characters, warlords etc. existed in the past too and are now dead, so this it's literally younger/past versions of a lot of characters, that's why King Varian said his father faced these same Warlords, *literally*).
    So he kind of is changing the past because Maraad's story was his recollection of the events from years ago, however it is quite literally happening again, albeit slightly differently because the past was interfered with. The thing is, it doesn't actually change the past or anything though because the past Draenor dimension is a pocket dimension, it exists on it's own. So everything there doesn't alter our reality or change the past that already happened. Destroyed Draenor (Outland) and past Draenor actually exist at the same time.
    So it's more like they're just visiting a different dimension that is a vision of the past playing out differently, and that reality is attempting to invade ours.

  • @ericmartin8870
    @ericmartin8870 3 года назад +17

    Ok so...story time! lol
    One of the things that isn't super clear in these cutscenes and cinematics is that this whole series of events involves some time-travel business and kind of introduces an alternate timeline. At the end of the Mists of Pandaria campaign, Garrosh Hellscream escapes his punishment by jumping through some kind of portal (I'm fuzzy on all the details, I don't think I ever actually saw that particular cutscene in game). The portal takes him back in time to Draenor during the days of his father Grommash Hellscream, where he takes the opportunity to alter the events that led to the enslavement of the Orcs of Draenor by the demons of the Burning Legion.
    In the process he saves his father's life at the point when he would normally have died to save the Orcs from the influence of the Burning Legion, and ends up giving the Orcs of that time a powerful leader they wouldn't normally have had. Under Grommash's leadership, what would have been a broken race of refugees became the Iron Horde and began to set their sights on return to the timeline that Garrosh originally came from to wage war and conquest on OUR world.
    Maraad is a survivor of the original timeline in which the Orc horde ravaged his world when they were under the bloodlusted influence of the Burning Legion, so for him this is literally a chance to go back and keep the horrors of his own history from ever coming to pass. The same forces that drove him to blind vengeance and his greatest regrets are back and stronger than ever, threatening a version of his world that was never wrecked by them in the first place. More than just revenge, he seeks to legitimately undo the mistakes of the past and keep that kind of carnage from ever happening in the first place (at least to this new alternate version of his old world).
    It's not a lust for vengeance, it's a desperate need to keep the awful things he's experienced from happening to anyone else. He has a new people to save, and the means to do so. He'll give his last breath to defend them, the way he deeply regrets not having done in his own past.
    I can't really remember if Warlords of Draenor had a lot of cool in-game cutscenes to watch like some of the ones we saw for Mists of Pandaria, so you may be pretty much done here with this expansion. Legion is next, though...and it has a LOT of great stuff to watch both in its Harbingers stories (like Burdens of Shaohao and Lords of War) and in its actual game cutscenes. Something that wasn't shown much today was how much of a role Gul'dan played in the events of Warlords of Draenor, and he has a MUCH bigger role in Legion. LOTS of good stuff to check out coming up. :)

      A great summary, but I feel like some parts about Garrosh and Grommash youn should have kept for reaction video of Warlords of Dreanor, instead of Lords of War.
      But yeah. except for spoilers you have done it justice enough.
      Sucks that Lore ion this particular point in time expands so much, that one has to understand not only what is happaning on Azeroth, but also Legion, Old Gods, Titans and many many more.
      Here is to #Definitely not Defnitive, as I know you read all comments, before you move on to Legion cinematics, make sure to find out some info about WoW universe.
      Sargeras is a complex character, and to understand the lore moving on, his story has to be understood as well. since Sargeras, is the one who was considered the greatest threat to the universe from the very beginning, as well as the one who pulled the strings all along.
      (Yes, I know in Shadowlands it got changed a bit, but, but all Shadowlands did is destroy all lore we loved for the years)

    • @realkorti
      @realkorti 3 года назад

      another correction: in the regular timeline they succumbed to the will of the burning legion (lead by blackhand who was a puppet of gul'dan) and grommash died in warcraft 3 where you were correct - saving his people from mannoroth, the demon who's blood was controlling the orcs

    • @ericmartin8870
      @ericmartin8870 3 года назад

      @@cairne3696 Given that they'd done all the important Mists of Pandaria stuff in one video, I figured this WAS their video for Warlords of Draenor and that there wasn't any planned additional followups directly pertaining to the expansion. Didn't really spoil anything so far as I'm aware, pretty much anything I mentioned that takes place in WoD takes place in the cinematic trailer. If they DO end up doing more of it, including that trailer, they'll have some context now to know what they're looking at.
      Not trying to spoil anything for them, just didn't figure there was much more they'd be looking at from this expansion so was wrapping up basic background so they could move ahead to Legion.

    • @ericmartin8870
      @ericmartin8870 3 года назад

      @@realkorti I don't see how that's really a correction, I don't think I contradicted any of that information with my rundown? While events weren't at a 1:1 ratio as to what point in time they were meant to take place, the interference of Garrosh kind of hastened things along so that the blast that would originally have killed Grommash took place a lot earlier. Instead of drinking the green juice, getting enslaved and going on a warpath, and then LATER rebelling and having that chain of events happen...he just refused the Monster energy drink and had it happen then.
      I'm by no means an expert on WoW, I just tend to soak up stuff I find interesting in the things I enjoy so I have a decent understanding of a lot of the lore. If I misspoke or got something wrong, by all means please correct me. Having the correct info out there is more important to me than being right...I just don't think I was necessarily wrong here so much as simplified it a little to make it easier to digest?

    The important bit of information you're missing in this is we actually are going to the Past. Warlords of Draenor actually had us travel to the Orc homeworld of Draenor 35 years in the past before they ever came to Azeroth. Maraad would have the chance to save the lives he had seen lost both to the Orcs and those had had forsaken in his thirst for vengeance. Without writing a novel (cause explaining all the lore here would be) basically a character had gone back in time and changed it, creating an alternate timeline and used that to try and invade Azeroth in our current timeline; so we had to go back through the gateway they opened to the past and prevent what is essentially a second invasion of the Horde from happening.

So yes, he manipulated his father, and by consequence all of his race, for the sake of petty revenge and bloodthirst. (sorry, English is not my primary langage ^^)

      The original Warchief of the Horde is Blackhand the Destroyer. :)
      Although, he was put forth to become that by Ner’zhul and Gul’dan. Who were being manipulated by Kil’jaeden.
      So technically Kil’jaeden is the founding father of the Horde and Blackhand its first Warchief*.
      Thrall is the Warchief of the Horde the players could join in WoW, taking up the mantle after Orgrim Doomhammer, the second Warchief.
      Thrall was bringing them back to their shamanic roots and worked to defend Azeroth rather than conquer it, so he and the Horde he formed with Vol’jin and Cairne earned some good points in the eyes of the other Azeroth peoples, particularly after the third war.
      *iirc there had been warchiefs on Draenor before, when several clans banded together to (usually) fight the ogres. The senior shaman of those from the clans in question appointed a capable orc as the warchief for the time the alliance lasted, and when the threat had been dealt with, the clans went their separate ways and the warchief title was disbanded.
      One of the lasting perversions of orc culture Kil’jaeden indirectly caused was to make the warchief position permanent, and the supreme leader, instead of a job title given to someone to solve a specific, temporary problem.
      Having a position meant for war as the primary, permanent leader, instead of the more balanced clan leader setup of chieftan (practical) and shaman (cultural and spiritual) has caused all sorts of problems, both for the orcs themselves and everyone else.

      During the second war, both of them enlist allies to help them.
      After Doomhammer kills Blackhand in a mak'gora he allies with the amani trolls under Zul'jin, ogre magi under Cho'gall and goblin mercenaries.
      (This is also when they enslave Alexstrsza and make her bear drakes for them to use as mounts.
      Gul'dan also makes the first death knights, putting the souls of orc warlocks into the bodies of dead human knights. It's why Teron Gorefiend looks like a human knight in the Black Temple raid.)
      The humans ally with the high elves, dwarves and gnomes.
      The reason Zul'jin and the Amani rise up to attack the Horde in the BC Zul'aman raid is because Thrall accepted the blood elves into the Horde, after Sylvanas vouched for them.
      Those are the same elves that took one of his eyes after they captured him during one of the wars between the Amani and Quel'thalas.

When I got into it again I really enjoyed the questing and the cutscenes that you will get to see next I'm sure. But then WoD didn't have much else going for it after that. Best thing it did was set up Legion, the next expansion!
    The Draenei are my favourite race though. The Orcs are obviously native to Draenor along with the Ogres, Arakkoa etc. Yet the planet had no name until the Eredar/Draenei came, fleeing their own homeworld. Being Eredar "outcasts" they changed their name to the Draenei and the new planet was named Draenor - meaning Outcasts (more precise: the exiled ones) and Outland respectively.
    Oh, and they came by the means of spaceship. So yeah, the Draenei are basically the most evolved and technologically advanced mortal race. I have literally no problem with them having tentacle beards, hooves and a tail. Considering they are generally speaking the least monstrous in culture. And very very unique in terms of fantasy tropes. I love em!

    Somewhere someone decided that that a people, the Orcs, described as peaceful and shamanistic until they were misled by demonic trickery into starting a war (they thought they were acting in self-defense), followed by those people being tricked into drinking demonic blood to survive said war, which turned them into relentless monsters was "Nope! Actually! Orcs were always monstrous and prone to genocidal urges!" All because someone wanted to give the Horde and Horde players a reason to kill what was essentially the orc's recent ancestors from another timeline.
    As a former WoW player that mained Horde, it was very heartbreaking watching how even the nicest group of orcs, The Forstwolves, were prone to momentary fits of mindless self-destructive violence even without demonic influence.
    The reason things didn't seem right with Maraad is because he's a Draenei and they are highly prone to corruption. Much like how the Orcs are depicted here. The Draenei is just a name they go by these days. They were originally called the Eredar until the majority of that species was seduced by the power promised to them by Sargeras, the Dark Titan, and became the highest ranking Demons of the Burning Legion. They've spent millennia subjugating and destroying every world in the cosmos.

    • @suntiger745
      @suntiger745 3 года назад

      Arguably, the Froswolves and the Draenei are two sides of the same coin. ;)
      Btw, hasn’t it been long-standing canon that orcs always had the capacity for bloodlust in battle, and what Mannoroth’s blood did was amp that up to 11 and make it permanent, not a temporary battle frenzy?
      Part of why the orcs lost so much of their culture, aside from the mag’har, was because a generation of them lived in a haze of rage for, what, 10 years? 15? and on top of that they lost the connection to the elements and the spirits of their ancestors, until Thrall managed to rekindle the connection.

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames
      @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames  3 года назад

      Interesting, however, just to play devils advocate, the blind rage and destructive mindless behavior of Orcs isn’t unique to them. Humans are more than capable of the same. 😊🤗 Always enjoy your insights and comments. They are very well thought out.

    • @yannym4605
      @yannym4605 3 года назад

      @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yes, that's how it would work if this was a bit more realistic, but this expansion canonized this as an Orc genetic trait that no Orc can get away from without the most absolute dedication to discipline, while Humans are generally allowed a bit more nuance and can resist with just a little faith and self-control.
      The humans are generally depicted as the least human-like race in the game, with the bad ones being the exception and never representative. They are practically depicted as paragons of all virtues. Most of the Horde races get the opposite treatment. The good ones are treated as exceptions, and the bad ones are the representatives of the races. Which goes completely opposite to the message it started off with in Warcraft 3.
      The story has a problem where they repeatedly give the Alliance every reason to hate the Horde, while the Horde is given every reason to hate itself.
      Cataclysm really got the ball rolling with Garrosh "Orc Hitler" Hellscream which continued during "Mists of Pandaria". Warlords of Draenor canonized Orcs as being the worst of the worst. "Legion" was mostly a reprieve from this, but mostly because the Horde was hardly present in that expansion. "Battle For Azeroth" dragged the rest of the Horde into the same hole Orcs are in, with a special care for the Forsaken who got hit the hardest and lost their leader, Sylvanas, who became one of the new big bads.
      "Battle for Azeroth" was so controversial that it reached even news sources outside of gaming journalism for how upsetting it was.
      It doesn't help that the Alliance in general represents European and European-like cultures, while the Horde in general represents the cultures of people of color, many of which were genocided and/or colonized by said European cultures in real life.
      Blizzard's Warcraft's writers have been going down a real dark hole. The past year has been them trying to fix things, partially cause of all the controversy stemming from "Battle for Azeroth", and partially because a lawsuit was brought against the company for encouraging or at least allowing "frat boy culture" within its walls that has resulted in many employees becoming victims of misogyny, sexual harassments and racism. It's been a shit show over for the past 3-4 years. Even before the lawsuit came out, Blizzard had gotten rid off some of the more problematic individuals, but the culture still exists as many of their employees attest.

  • @lockretvids
    @lockretvids 3 года назад +2

    Hey, it's me again with story time! Buckle up because this is going to be confusing.
    Before we get into how Warlords of Draenor starts, we need to talk about the backstory of two races: the Draenei and the Orcs.
    The word "draenei" means "exiled ones" in Eredun. The reason why they are exiles is because long ago, Sargeras, the Fallen Titan offered them a deal: join him in his quest to cleanse the universe and be rewarded with unimaginable power and knowledge. Two of their three leaders, Archimonde and Kil'Jaden, accepted, the third one, Velen, however, rejected. He and his followers would run from the Burning Legion (Sargeras's army) for millenia before crashing on Draenor, the home of the Orcs.
    Initially, there wouldn't be too much conflict between the Orcs and the Draenei. Kil'Jaden, however, eventually found where the Draenei were hiding and he didn't want the Draenei to flee yet again, so he hatched a plan to use the Orcs to destroy them. Without going into too much detail, he would use Gul'dan (an orc who was very power hungry and ambitious) to unite the Orcs against the Draenei, forming the Horde. The Horde would ravage Draenei settlements and went on a literal genocidal campaign. Velen and a few refugees managed to escape without being noticed (which is why there are Draenei on Azeroth today) but their people were utterly destroyed, their kind close to extinction.
    The Horde would then try invading Azeroth which directly or indirectly leads to all the events happening in the Warcraft games (including World of Warcraft).
    And now we can talk about how Warlords of Draenor starts. As you've seen in the previous WoW video, Garrosh Hellscream is defeated and is taken to stand trial in Pandaria. During the trial, a Bronze Dragon (the dragonflight in charge of monitoring the timestream) approaches him about undoing the mistakes of the past, a deal which he accepts. Garrosh is then taken back 35 years into the past to Draenor, before the Orcs started their genocidal campaign. In this Alternate Draenor, Garrosh looks for the Warsong Clan and warns his father, Grommash not to accept any deal Gul'dan offers as it would end with the enslavement of the Orcs to the Burning Legion. He also shares a lot of his knowledge about "futuristic" technology in order to offer an alternative to Gul'dan's deal. The Dark Portal is still built, but instead of linking Alternate Draenor to Alternate Azeroth, it instead opens up to the Prime Timeline (i.e. our Azeroth) and the newfound Iron Horde starts invading through the Red Portal. The expedition to Draenor thus has two objectives: disable the Iron Horde's means of invasion and apprehend Garrosh, as he's technically a fugitive.
    There's more, but I'll leave it here as the rest would be spoiler filled, and you said you wanted to watch the rest of Wod's cinematics. Let me know if you have any questions, I know time travel stories can be more than confusing.

    There are too much Backstory here,
    Behind the Scene story part.
    Loretime
    Garrosh Hellscreem was defeated in Pandaria and stand trial in Pandaria.
    During this time, "Kairozdormu", the student of Bronze Dragon "Nazdormu" peek into future and saw very dark future, many evil forces return to take over Azorath's soul.
    He plot a plan with "Wrathion", the son of Deathwing and save "Garrosh" from Pandaria.
    Their plan was travel through time to alternate timeline and bring "Maghar" (uncorrupted orcs) to Azorath to fight with evil forces. Garrosh Is best candidate cause, it's his father "Grommash" is the first to drink demon blood.
    But as expected, Garrosh had his own plans,. He kills Kairoz and did the same but to invade our world instead of saving it.
    1:30 during the arrivaal of Garrosh, Orcs vs Draenai war is already started, can see sneak peak Into the war.
    3:11 that's a Gronn, they are parts of Orcs evolution line (like Monkeys to Humans, Gronns to Orcs)
    3:40 - that's the seven Warlords of Orcs.
    4:11 - starting here, we see Alliance king "Varian" talk with "Muraad" about warlords one by one.
    During first war, on our timeline, Orcs won the war killing Varian's father king "Layne", and also destroy human Capital city. (The Movie Warcraft is based on that story but heavily changed story)
    (Stories here are pretty much self explanatory, so I will say about Thier stories in our timeline, not this alternative timeline )
    Kargath - pretty much same In our timeline, he didn't died during first war, he participated in many events. Later join "Illidian" in outland in exchange for more demon blood. But I time this demon blood turn him into a monster and players had to stop him.
    Grommash Hellscreem - father of Garrosh. He is first to drink demon blood, and started the corruption. He was in Frist part reaction, where he kills Manoroth and free orcs from corruption, he was injured in battle and died (( remember that statement, it will referred soon in cinematics)).
    11:59 - in alternative version, his wife died and Garrosh never born.
    15:40 - Durotan - father of Thrall. Nobel leader of Frostwolf. "Nerzul" found out about Demon blood curse and warned everyone about it. Only Durotan followed the warning and didn't drink demon blood.
    But still living among corrupted orcs effected them some what corrupting them too.
    After defeating humans, Durotan left the Horde with his clan. But "Guldan" send assassins to kill everyone in his clan, only Baby Thrall escaped cause assassins didn't want to kill a baby. Baby Thrall is adopted by a Human family under some issues.
    18:20 Mother Gheya - in our timeline she's actually still lives, she's very old and act as a elder to remaining uncorrupted orcs from our timeline. She the one actually raise Garrosh after his father left him to war.
    21:32. - Killrog - in our timeline he didn't die during first war. He's there when Nerzul is tricked by "Kiljaeden" for second time to open portals, which lead to destruction of Draenor. He was killed by Alliance during the attempts to stop Nerzul from opening portals. Even in our timeline, he knew before he was going to die.
    28:00 - Maraad - so this is obviously our timeline story of Corrupted Orcs invading capital of Dranais.
    Ok another Backstory
    The War of Draenor : Orcs Vs Draenai.
    So this happens after orcs defeat the Ogres and Achieve independence.
    Draenais (Eradar) fleeing from "Kiljaeden" crash land on Draenor. Orcs are peaceful and friendly race towards them.. so they decided to live there, change Thier name to Draenais.
    After many many years. "Kiljaeden" found this world. And this time he had a sneaky approach.
    He met "Guldan", made him his Harbinger.
    "Kiljaeden" made a illusion of dead wife of "Nerzul" who was leader of Shadowmoon clan, and slowly made distrust about Draenais amoung orcs. Like saying Draenais sacrificing orc children.
    For few years clan leaders don't want to start a war. Meanwhile Guldan low-key became student of Nerzul. And do inside jobs creating scenarios about Draenais, finally orc clans United under Nerzul naming the "Horde". At this time, Nerzul found out about the plot and send warnings to all clan leaders.... But Guldan manage to claim he's crazy and took over his leadership of Horde...
    Now war began. many Draenais cities invade and destroyed. But Capital Shatterath is too powerful to invade. So Guldan Summons the Demon Monoroth. And give his blood to drink as a boost. They didn't knew this blood will corrupt the orcs and make them into slaves. "Grommash" is the first to accept this curse.
    Then Shatterath is invaded and Fallen. Draenais manage to escape again and land on Azorath.
    Then Guldan start his next plan, creating the dark portal to open a door to Azorath.
    Because Draenais didn't know. legion was looking for this planet Azorath for so long and now they found it. ( Why they want it is explored in next cinematics)

    Warlords was a really good single player experience... which doesn't do well in an MMO it has the most cut content we the players know about of any expansion, and it really didn't have an endgame at all. Plus the story which was really good they ended up not even finishing so there's a big gap with some characters development, and most the warlords got boned. Like Kargath Bladefist was the first boss of the first raid which didn't really have anything to even do with the Iron Horde, and Ner'Zhul was just a basic bitch dungeon boss -_-
    WoD had so much potential but had like the biggest drop off of players in WoWs history up to that point lol.

      Ah okay. Maybe that’s why so much of the content is flagged by Blizzard 😂 They want to erase this I guess

    For the father orc killed by his son, aside from his old age and sickness, I feel like that the father may have wanted to know what led his son to kill him, what he could have seen for such a thing to happen, would that be something good, a hope for them or not? In a way he died knowing that his son (and his death ?) would lead to a better future for their tribe.
    Though I'm not sure what the father saw himself but I suppose not the same as his son, unless "kind of" and he wanted confirmation from his son? (in case the future would have changed maybe)

    Well, actually Maraad says it literally, because in this expansion they go back to the past, just not his own past, but to a different timeline.
