I cannot state how thankful I am for this video. I have a huge History exam next month and this particular topic isn't well explained in my sources. This video makes it accesible and straightforward! I hope this channel has a long life, so it can help other people in the future
Thanks Jacob - that was fascinating. There’s a line at the end of an episode of Blackadder (The Archbishop) that mentions "all three Popes" - I’ve often wondered what was meant by this and now I know (though the date was wrong by 69 years!
Love your videos, I'm more of a early-modern and modern history student but you do a great job unpacking the middle ages. I would love to hear you talk about the witch hunts, although I know it's more early modern than medieval. I got interested in them through Federici's book Caliban and the Witch, and thought it was incredible (although it was as much philosophy as it was history). If you are familiar with it, I would love to hear your thoughts/critiques.
Very interesting. Thanks for the video. Any insight into a rise of atheism/agnosticism as a result of the Schism? Or did it just push people into other forms of Christianity?
Well, Monarchs would centralize power themselves. Which would weaken the Church but also eventually the nobility. Which will then like a pendulum swing the other way creating nationalism. Which will take down the Monarch in some cases and both the monarch and the nobility in others. Leading to the end of feudalism and also the rise of atheism. Something like that, I suppose.
So, the Renaissance would see a rise of what we can sort of call Agnosticism, but more accurately we can call it "esotericism". Pico della Mirandola really championed the idea that all religions are right and can be synthesized together, and that organized Church wasn't really a thing. And yeah, he lived in the time after the schism, so it could have played a role. It is hard to find completely areligious people in the pre-modern world, though.
Situation: There are 2 competing popes. "2?! Ridiculous! We need to elect one pope that unifies the entire Catholic Church!" Situation: There are 3 competing popes.
On the topic of Schism, I have always wanted to learn more about the East-West Schism.
I will likely tackle it at some point. It is similarly convoluted haha

Glad it is helpful!
This channel deserves so much more traffic. Like Jacob seems like an excellent teacher and I wish I had him
Thanks!
Your History videos are very concise. As a history student I’ll keep watching them with a lot of enthusiasm
Great job !

How much did these events affect the Franco-Italian relationship, and ultimately influence the Italian Wars?

Yeah. Woops!
Looking forward to when you inevitably say you're Nizzhon during the intro and don't catch it during editing!
Haha I have done it and caught it in editing, so it is very possible.
I feel some diagrams/maps would be appropriate for this topic. Is that something you do?
