    I blame having wasted hours on the PC game Castle, but have you ever thought about the Prestor John myth, and maybe doing a video about it? The idea of a savior is interesting, but one that was supposed to be foreign and yet not at the same time other (he was a Christian IIRC in the story) is a peculiar trope. Most cultures like to have saviors of any sort coming fully from within their own, and the idea of a foreigner riding to the rescue seems incredibly peculiar in our era of heavy anti-immigration rhetoric.
    Also, just straight up enjoying these. I had a very deep love of history as a child, and enjoy having curated content like this, specifically not just about the military history of the period, is wonderful. I didn't like the bigger picture as much as the battles as a kid, but as an adult I think the rest has more to teach us.

    Nice little review there on England/Danelaw stuff for me. At first, I had Aathelread mistaken with Edmund the 1st with the territorial losses after Aathelstan's death. But then when I saw no comeback was forthcoming and Knut entered the building it was pretty clear where we were.... Altho the year 1000ish should have been a clear give-away if history was a bit sharper lol.

    Is Henry III one of the runners up? My impression of him is that he was similar to his father in that he was both incompetent and cruel. Ironically, it was bad kings like John and Henry III that lead to more freedoms for people. In order to reclaim the throne, Henry's son Edward had to promise that he would abide by the reforms that had been put in place during Henry's deposition. It's thanks to events like that that Parliament came to be.

    I've got a question about the maps at 12:05. Henry VI inherited the title of King of France. Who ruled the French holdings, then? And why didn't Henry rule all of it at the start of his reign?

    • @NizzahonHistory
      @NizzahonHistory  3 года назад +1

      Well, Henry wanted to rule it all, that's what the war was over. He controlled the city where French kings are crowned (Reims), so he was able to swing the coronation, but the southern part of France, loyal to the French king, wasn't in agreement about his coronation.

    • @rfs8194
      @rfs8194 3 года назад

      @@NizzahonHistory That makes sense! I guess being king isn't easy when people don't agree that you're king. How was the French king chosen after Charles V had to make Henry V his heir?

    Have you seen the Spanish show El Cid on Amazon? I watched it recently because I have been interested in El Cid since spending some time in Spain long ago. It was pretty good, and I mention this because it reminded me a lot of your videos about the Crusades and Crusader States, depicting small Christian kingdoms working alongside Muslim polities, even in the midst of an ostensibly anti-Muslim conflict. I'm curious how you feel about the historical accuracy of the show.

    • @MarkVrem
      @MarkVrem 3 года назад

      Haven't watched the show, but I"m gonna throw in a context piece for you to consider. I first kind of came aware of this watching Kings and Generals' recent episode on the Berbers. So, apparently the Arabs being Muslims were running out of tax revenue. This was because the Berber and Spanish populations of Morocco, Spain, Algeria, etc were becoming Muslim. Now eventually the Arabs running out of proper excuses start taxing Muslim Berbers anyways. (Not sure if they taxed Muslim Spaniards also, I don't believe so). Either way, the fact they forced a tax on the Berbers completely destabilized the situation for the Arabs in Northwestern Africa. These Civil Wars eventually spill over into Spain itself. Creating the opening for the Christians to start making their comeback.

      They changed a lot over the course of such a long war! In the beginning, the French were still utilizing the heavily armored knight, and by the end they were using cannons and guns, to give you any idea.

      But more on the topic, in the southeast, a similar pattern happened in 14th century. Serbian king, later emperor, Dusan (the Mighty) expanded medieval Serbia from Danube all the way down to Aegean sea, only for all of it to be lost by his son Uros (the Weak).
