it's a shame this feature wasn't included built-in on the Wii (given the console has DVD capabilities) we could've had a "Movie Channel" or something like that..
It is a shame. On the original Xbox, Microsoft's official reasoning behind requiring the "DVD playback kit" was because they did not want to pay for the licensing fees (to Toshiba? I believe) for every console sold, as they knew not everybody would need it. Instead, they opted to put the license inside the remote receiver instead. In their eyes it was a win-win: people who wanted to use the Xbox to play DVDs still could, and they wouldn't have to pay Toshiba(?) for every console sold; just every DVD kit sold. Nintendo could've easily sold the DVD license on the Wii Shop Channel as an add-on to the Disc Channel if they didn't want to license every Wii console sold. Of course, licensing every console was intended from the beginning (as implied here at tcrf.net/images/2/27/Wii_Menu_DVD_DiskChannel.png), but for whatever reason they opted against it. It would've been nice.
@@awesomemercerdude Even before the Xbox, going as far back as the Amiga CD32, 3DO, Saturn, and PS1, they all had a separate add-on to play VCDs. Nintendo should have done the same with the Wii and WiiU.
That’s pretty cool lol. There was a period where the only DVD player I had in my room was a PS2. Back then I couldn’t figure out how to fix the screen settings so I watched First Man on an image less than half the size of the screen
I couldn’t tell you. Our Wii is from Christmas ‘06. I was under the impression that DVD playback was phased out pretty quickly but someone else told me that some later models work. My friend has a black Wii we’re testing in the next few days. I know for a fact that the Wii has to be GameCube compatible. Wii Family Edition and Wii mini don’t work, and Wii U doesn’t work.
still no space movie 2 smh awesomemercerfraud
I know right

This is how I watched DVDs from 2009 to 2013. Not even kidding. I also used to use WiiMC to load RUclips Videos, sadly that no longer works now.

WIiMC can still load youtube videos iirc, it just takes forever to do so
An at least decade old discovery, but cool.
I remember thinking the disc that came with the DS Action Replay would work on GC. I later bought the GC Action Replay
Oh man he actually had that Superman the Animated Series DVD on a good old Wii/GameCube lol.
SEGA SATURN SPOTTED
Cool! I think the dvds also work on black wii models. Still pretty dope
I have a friend with a black GameCube enabled Wii. I’ll pass on the info and see if it works
apparently all the Wii models from before mid 2009 work cuz that was around the time Nintendo changed the Wii's DVD drive.
1:31 crazy laugh
no way it’s the joker
Holy shit that is incredible
Mines from november 2008 and can play dvd i wouldnt call that early, definitely not launch model
Yea I was under the impression that it was patched out pretty early but people keep telling me otherwise. Oops lol
Nice video man!
That so cool discover man 😎!
Why the heck is your wii on 4 x 3 mode on a 16 x 9 TV
My OG Wii is just a GameCube machine these days and 4:3 GameCube games get stretched if you set the Wii to widescreen.
Lol u should try order pizza on wii lol
do you like cornbread
aye
There awesome!
My only question is why would you use your Wii in 4:3 on a 16:9 screen?
I play my Wii games on Wii U and my GameCube games on Wii. They look better in 4:3.
didn’t know, neat. which model numbers specifically work?
