  • Can a knee brace heal chondromalacia patella? This is a question that anyone with knee pain from chondromalacia patella will ask themselves as they consider using it.
And most healthcare professionals don't really know the answer either because they tend to not be knowledgeable about naturally healing chondromalacia patella.
Most healthcare professionals are excellent at treating health problems with medications, injections, and surgery.
In this video, Dr. David answers the question "Can a knee support brace actually help improve chondromalacia patella?"

Having dealt with chondromalacia for almost ten years I was finally able to get it into remission by fixing several issues. I've been pain free for almost a year now, despite the cartilage under the knee cap being completely worn out (which was confirmed by a scan).
My main issue was the overpronation of the feet with big toes pointing inward (by inward I mean towards the middle of the foot) in a 20-25 degree angle. I was basically walking like a duck my whole life with my whole foot being pointed outward, which in turn caused my feet arches to collapse and which, in turn, caused my knees to point inward with my legs forming an X shape. Because of this, the knee cap was not moving in the correct trajectory above the knee joint. I am hoping I am describing it clearly, with English not being my native language. It also caused my pelvis to tilt forward and my back to form hyper lordosis.
None of the doctors I went to pointed out this issue with my feet, it was all trial and error.
    What fixed it:
    - wearing toe separators with shoes which allow the big toe to be directed forward. Check out barefoot shoes like vivobarefoot, or if that is to much of a change (they need a lot of time to get used to), get shoes with wide front parts like Altra
    - analyzing my movement pattern. I consciously make an effort to push with my big toes and have them pointed straight at all times. When you start to push with you toes, it completely changes the dynamics of the step - you actually start to feel your butt muscles and calves working. For the first couple of weeks, after walking like this for a couple of kilometers my calves and butt muscles were on fire, which was a completely new sensation. Now I am used to it and those muscles no longer hurt.
Like I said, now I am pain free and even thinking about starting squats at the gym, because squats no longer hurt.
In my case quad muscles had nothing to with chondromalacia. You should see my quads - they have always been almost atrophied. Like - they are non-existent.

I was diagnosed with bone on bone arthritis in both knees. Been through the physical therapy route. I ASKED to be fitted for a knee brace as I felt instability in my left knee. I have been “fitted” for each of those braces. Could not use any of them. The reason was when I walked. They would slide down to my ankle. By the way it took 6 months to find out none of them would work. I actually felt and tried to convey that muscle movement seemed to cause them to fall. My opinion fell on deaf ears. I was surprised when they “measured” me that they never checked the circumference of my leg. After all that, I was in limbo--until I came across your videos! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Great service to the public by sharing your knowledge!!

I hear you mention muscle imbalance often. How does one learn of it and correct muscle imbalance? Thank you!

learning how to manipulate via inner organisation of joints, has helped me greatly in order to be able to use my knee without any restrictions today eventhough I have a lot of crunchy cartilage loosly behind the patella. When organisation of weightdistribution is perfect, I kind of have no issue at all to use leg for walk, sprint etc.
