These opening chords are gorgeous. What a splendid performance of this song. Masterpiece. It's been on a loop for me for days. Tim Minchin, You have a HUGE fan here in New Mexico, US.
Was thinking the same thing! Maybe it was just song choice with the surrounding (ie a kids choir and they're stuck in a bunker)? He sounds wonderful as far as I am concerned 🤩
I always cry when I hear one of the many versions Peter Gabriel has recorded. I cried at this too. I guess that says it all. I saw his hands tremble with nerves and emotion. Even though it stalled and he sometimes ignored the composer's cadences, it's a thrilling performance. The way he throws himself into the crescendo is like "Fuck it, here goes!"
Creía que nadie me emocionaría tanto como Peter Gabriel interpretando esta canción, pero Tim Minchin lo ha hecho. Por un momento solo había voz y piano. Bravo Tim.
While it's light years better than any rendition I could give of this song it doesn't approach the beauty of the Gabriel-sung version on Robert Fripp's Exposure album.
I was so worried when I saw this. PG is one of the greatest musicians alive, and I really like Minchin.... Thanks for doing it justice sir. I will go home and eat a baby sammich to celebrate a good well done for another athiest :)
Such a hard song to cover (go on, try singing it… I dare you!) but I reckon Tim got there in the end. Oh, and the setting is *so* JJJ… complete with disinterested person in the background, transfixed by her smartphone. Textbook!
I love Tim M but not with this song just because I remember well when Peter Gabriel first sang it, and now I’m trying to listen to Tim but Mr Gabriel’s warm voice is in my ear and I cannot concentrate, sorry Tim I’m now searching for PG’s version.
he needs to knock off the country twang that keeps creeping in there. Peter has really good diction..and tim's isn't - still a good version though - but needs a lot of practice to improve his diction.
he's from Australia - nothing to do with the country of Australia - that would be US of A. I've listened to it again and quite honestly it's terrible - he adds a country music twang to a lot of it...sounds awful. I stand by my initial comments.
2024 and I keep coming back to this amazing cover.
Anyone else doing the same ?
relatively new fan of tim, but adore gabriel for decades.
I've been listening to versions of this song for more than 30 years. This version blew me away.

The fact that he just said he blew this performance in his interview for this year's like a version baffles me!!

@@paulas8717 maybe not his strongest vocal performance, but hey still sounded great and I still loved the emotional connection!
I'm glad he mentioned it, because it sent me here. Beautiful rendition. Probably not right for the room, but who cares!
Thats why im here too... harshest critic. Altho he COULD have done a better song, this is still nice though.
Really? I keep returning to this song as an utterly perfect cover.
Simply beautiful.
One of Minchin's best kept secrets. Love this.
This is the best singing I've ever heard from Tim Minchin.
Beautiful performance wasted, I believe, on those in the room. Tim never disappoints. Thank you for the upload.
Yeah, I watched that girl get up in the background and start laughing and chatting with someone during the song. That was so rude.
What an unbelievable stunning performance in a totally dimwit surrounding.
This is beyond beautiful.
brought this home

10/10 would listen at the end of the world
Im here now in March 2020!
2 of my top vocalists and lyricists of all time (and I'm over 50).
Beautiful rendition of a most-beautiful song by Peter Gabriel
Thank you both!!!
Golly he looks fantastic so natural.
My favourite
So beautiful
a song that was a hit before they were born
So beautiful!
Such an amazing cover.
I always love Tim Minchin.
That was simply beautiful
That holds your attention! Can hear the words better than Gabriel's version. Nicely done Tim :)
OMG Tripple J how did this arrive in these times, what a song and the way Tim played it and that voice uuummm lovely, thank you!
This deserves a proper video.
i cried :')
i love this:)
Comedians will save me from the end of the world. Tim Minchin. YEOW!
Creía que nadie me emocionaría tanto como Peter Gabriel interpretando esta canción, pero Tim Minchin lo ha hecho. Por un momento solo había voz y piano. Bravo Tim.
I am learning how to play this, it is SO tricky for those who have taught themselves

Awsome
he isn't trained but my god he is fucking talented
i wish i could do that so sweet :)
wow, really good :D

It is possible for two people could be athier than most but only one could be athiest.
MEGA
i thought he only did comedy..this is awesome

Textbook!
Gabriel should cover this cover
start at 1:07... no worries, just buy me a beer :)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh
you never caught him doing the comedy night at the proms Hes a proper classical trained pianist very very talented guy
He's not classically trained, he's self taught
who the fuck would dislike this? run at me bro
Why is that man not in me?
chick on her phone in the background - totally unmoved
shame about the sound quality :(
Missjenna75 I totally agree, the other woman walking round is distracting too
tim you did not by any means blow this, saddens me that youd think so
It was a joke about the impending apocalypse on December 21st! :)
mmmm Donuts...
sound quality is poor, such a shame

Is it soooo difficult to sing the dam melody the way that the composer wrote it, jeeez

+justme I think he means southern drawl, at times it's a lil like Creed/STP....grunge like.
