Love it - but why not to create a shape to cover the whole background (rectangle), create the shape of the ovals (like the black ones here) - choose the background shape and that oval shape - go to format, arrange and subtract??
Just to add yet another way of creating the transparent mask, before exporting as an image, you could just exclude the form from format --> arrange --> exclude which just will cut out the form, making the export / import / Instant Alpha shananigans obsolete.
I was wondering why you have suggested photoshop when it can be achieved in keynote.. good someone asked about it for benefits of others. Also, it helped me to refine my implementation.
I now feel whole and complete.😉 Thanks for leading me to another AWESOME video. Your energy, and your antics really made me laugh. I just love your AUTHENTICITY! No wonder I keep coming back to "The Crazy One!" He ROCKS it!!! Thanks for taking the time to do the definitive and *FINAL* video on this topic!!😳🤣😂 Your talent and skill is so appreciated!
Your videos are excellent and have helped me quite a bit recently, so THANK YOU and keep it up! Quick question: Is there any add-on software for Keynote that will allow the presenter to edit the text of a few table cells DURING the presentation? I switched to Keynote from PowerPoint because Keynote has the ability to include tables with formulas, and I (incorrectly) assumed they would be editable while presenting. So now I'm looking into any upgrade software I can buy that will provide this functionality, and I'm having a tough time finding anything. Thanks in advance for any hints you may have!
There isn't anything that I know but I will also admit that I rarely use tables since I mostly present design or give talks with it but let me do some research and reach out to some people at Apple and see what I can find.
@@StephenGates Wow, that's so kind, I really appreciate it! I really can't understand the benefit of offering table formulas if they can't be used "live" during a presentation; plugging different numbers into a table and letting the formulas do the heavy lifting is a valuable tool for showing an audience data. Anyhow, MUCH APPRECIATED!!
Hi! thank you for posting this tutorial. When creating a custom branded slideshow either for Powerpoint or Google slides, do you suggest creating one on illustrator or photoshop? And if so, is there a way to create the slides so that the elements are editable or should the custom slides be designed only in the native software (Google slides or ppt) Thanks in advance!
Sadly I never use Powerpoint and rarely use Google Slides so I am not sure the answer. My cheat usually is to create the deck in Keynote and then import it into Slides.
What about transparent videos? I want to import 3d objects and animate them, but keynote does not support that, so I now export animation from blender and use it as a video in the keynote, but the problem is the background of the video. I need a more reliable and better solution.
Hi. Great idea. My approach for a circle with a hole in it to highlight part of a slide was to work with a blank slide, superimpose a smaller black circle on a slightly larger red one, then open Preview, opt to Take Screenshot from selection and copy the circles to Preview. Using Markup and instant alpha, make the circle surround plus the inner bit transparent, then export, ensuring that you use PNG format, to the Desktop. Hy presto, a red circle with a hole in the middle. Hope that makes sense.
I saw it and it is driving me crazy too. Not sure how that happened but guessing it was a problem in the processing on RUclips since it isn't in the original file and some of the screen recordings get a little tearing in them. Wish there was some way to update the file without have to delete the whole thing on here and start over. Sorry about that.
Hey, I went searching for software to help with my RUclips channel, settled on learning Keynote at 1am and learned a ton already from you! On the subject of transparency, I feel you missed an even BETTER way: 1. Create your 5 grouped pill shapes, then UNGROUP them all. You'll now have 15 objects that comprise the pills. 2. With them still selected, Unite them to make them all a single object. 3. Create a full size white rectangle and move it to the back. Use the sidebar to get it exactly the right size and position (0,0). 4. Select the two objects you should now have: the background and the "5 pill" object. 5. Choose subtract. This makes a fully vector based overlay object. The big bonus of this is that there's zero issues with alpha edges and the file size will be way less. It will probably perform better, and certainly will scale better. Maybe... you.. better.. make another video. ;)
Stephen, let me tell you something, few months ago I knew nothing about keynote, thanks for your channel and the others on RUclips I learn a lot. Now strong statement: I am better than you :) I would never export to jpeg, I would never export to png, no photoshop either, rather extract two objects. Result is still crispy, sharp edges, vectors, easy to modify if needed. Alpha channel use for different purposes, not vector graphics. What do you think?
This is one of my favorite teachers starting today
Thanks so much

your videos skyrocketed my business
Thanks!
You're the only RUclipsr I've clicked the bell for. Always fabulous. Please keep up the great work
Just wow! Keynote is amazing, and so are you for figuring this out for us non-PS people.
Happy to help. Any other things you are trying to figure out let me know.,
@@StephenGates hello, Thanks for all the knowledge; please share, how the pointer circle increases in size when you want to highlight something.
@@PriyaSangwan I use am app called Pro Mouse which you can find in the Mac App Store that lets you do that.
@@StephenGates Thanks!
Excellent technique 💕
I just found your videos this morning and holy sh@t !!! Absolutely valuable, no nonsense information!! THANK YOU!!
Glad it was helpful!
That transparency lesson is wonderful! And so fast! It really helps!
Thanks!
You're awesome! I have just subscribed and liked it!
Welcome aboard!
Love your tutorials. It really helped me a lot. But why didn't you subtract the shapes?
dude you're the best!
Thanks so much.

Great to know on transparency and that too by working within Keynote. Thanks Stephen !
Happy to help!
I've been using Instant Alpha for years. It's also accessible in the Inspector under Images. I love how you're using it for a mask.
Thanks. As I don’t have photoshop

It’s the first time I comment on someone’s video. Your tutorials are super helpful thank you so much and please keep your creativity up👍👍👍
I'm flattered. Thanks so much!
Hey Steve, your content is just great, You deserve a lot more subscribers. Sincerely appreciate you putting this content in. Thank you!

No luck so far but still trying to see if I can find anything that will work for you.
Stephen Gates - The Crazy One no worries buddy, I appreciate it but I realize I am probably looking for the Loch Ness Monster at this point lol.
Going through ZOOM How can I use keynote as an interactive page where students can write on the slide or move things on the slides?
The only way I could think of would be to use Keynote Live so you would all be collaborating on the slide at the same time.

Why not use PNG?
Lip sync issue after the intro graphics but I'll work it out 👍🏾

Ha.... No more videos. This is a great way to do it too. Thanks for adding it.
Just wondering why you couldn't just subtract those shapes from a rectangle within Keynote?
As I said in the video, Instant alpha only works on images not the object that are created in Keynote.
