This is SO cool. I live in the middle of nowhere and if I leave my spot light on at night in the summer, hundreds of potato bugs land on my porch. The opossums come and eat them all. It's really cool watching them hunt.
I think maybe it’s not vicious in reality, the opossum maybe knows if he’s not accurate catching a cricket it could escape, so he acts fast in turn making it look “vicious”.
Josh you should keep Rocky, she had gotten too accustomed to humans now. There is barely even a chance she will be able to surivive out in the wilderness.
Eat it! possum is good meat, especially when they are young, it's nice and tender and goes well with anything, you can roast, barbecue even deep fry it, just don't microwave it, it taste horrible and is very disrespectful to the animal, if you are lucky you'll have enough hide left for a stylish possum wallet. jk, original comment is: Keep the possum, they don't even live that long, i think it's about 3 years, if you release it i'll probably die in the wild, it's too accustomed to humans now.

They don't count. They use a plastic tube with marks on it 500,1000,5000 etc and fill it. When the crickets hit the line, that's approximately the number.
@Blue Morpho Ecosystems are complex things. Food webs are important to maintain as they occur naturally, or else serious consequences could arise. Something as little as the introduction of a new prey on any trophic level, or the domination of said trophic level by that organism, could have catastrophic results. Thankfully, in the modern urban and suburban areas, there is usually enough human interaction to dilute the natural flow of things. This is both good and bad.. Good in this case because the repercussions would be much slower and less intense than in the wild, and thus can usually be corrected quickly by humans.
@Blue Morpho Just because someplace has another type of the same animal doesn't mean it fits in the new ecosystem. Those light brown crickets they raise for bait destroy the native cricket populations and can do some damage on native plants. Just like how the USA has native sparrows (chipping sparrow, song sparrow, etc), but the common sparrow you see today making nests in signs and filling up parks is an invasive species brought over from England in the 1800s (English House Sparrow). The native sparrows don't harm the ecosystem, but the invasive house sparrows have been growing out of control in population and attack + kill native songbirds (swallows, bluebirds, native sparrows, etc), putting some in danger of going extinct. In the same way, fire ants, boa constrictors, asian carp, and many other invasive animals have been reeking havoc on ecosystems lately. Pythons in Florida have become a HUGE problem (like, seriously, don't go in the woods in the Florida Everglades unaware...) So it doesn't matter if we have crickets too (or sparrows, ants, or any other animal), non-native animals have evolved different survival traits depending on the environment they're native to, and even a small change can destroy part of the ecosystem and cause them to thrive disproportionately to their environment and often at the expense of local animals, becoming invasive.
@Blue Morpho Yes, they live in the USA--NOW (except Florida where they can't thrive for some reason). But they are non-native and invasive (and are called house crickets because they do tend to infest houses). House crickets are originally from southwestern Asia.
