Return to Na-Pali is a little better than the original Unreal 1.
The level design have more details, better quality with unreal engine 1. For an exemple : compare the spaceship "Vortex Rikers" to the "Prometheus".... with the Nali village just before you arrived. Ect.....
A really good addon for fans...

As far as I'm concerned, Return to Na Pali was good... but only so much. I enjoyed the original a lot more. Levels in RTNP were not as well made (but still ok). The only one that stands out to me is Gala's peak, since it was a new environment with slippery ice.

Also, the new weapons were bit conventional and underwhelming. They didn't fit in well... it seemed like they were almost literally pulled straight out of quake 2. Even the explosion of the rocket + grenade launchers had the cheesy polygonal bubble look from Q2. Kind of funny looking, and very different from the eight-ball rocket explosion (which looked substantially better imo). Speaking of which... all of these weapons already existed in some form already, so why add them? Don't get me wrong... they worked fine enough, and the original weapons were all still there. But the eightball already served as both a rocket AND grenade launcher, and was way more interesting. The one I actually enjoyed was the assault rifle, it was fun, but again they already had the automatic minigun, which had nearly the same role (and looked cooler, not that that means anything).
The enemy selection was OK, but didn't add much. The same enemies from the first one were (mostly) there of course. The new spiders, meh. Not very scary or interesting. The little dinos were actually fun, speedy little bastards in groups. The marines just pissed me off. Hard as hell, and not in a good way. I wish they were better thought-out.
I missed a lot of the spooky, haunting atmosphere from the first game. That first skaarj encounter was legendary, then there's those dark rooms in the sunspire, the ominous build up to the titan, the vortex rikers ship, and *especially* the last few levels on the scaarj ship with that creepy, unsettling music, and all those insane versions of sjaarj (translucent, glowing, and that big blue hard-to-kill one, etc). A lot of that was missing from RTNP.
Most of that is forgivable, to be honest. Don't want to come off as overly harsh. I got a chance to play more unreal, and enjoyed it for the most part. The only thing I consider _terrible_ was the character's voice acting. Didn't feel authentic one bit, it was obnoxious with laughably horrible dialogue. Not a big deal, you could skip it after each level if you wish (thank god) :)
I've already written a whole essay, heh. To me RTNP is basically a great fan mod, not on par with the original, but something fans got together and created, which turned out,
more or less, pretty good. Your opinions may vary :)
