Literally spent the last three days setting up a local host for mods for my family. Pulling my hair out all the way. Always wanted to know how hermitcraft did it.
The hardest part of maintaining a server is usally the first time you do anything or run into a problem, once you have experienced something enough it becomes 2nd nature I use to spend hours and hours on the server me and my friends use but as we go back to old games they are easy to set up but new games only depend on how settings and smaller changes are handled some are faster then others depending on how similar to previous games they are.
I have always secretly wished for this video! Thank you so much for sharing. Looking forward to the rest. For example, I would love an even deeper dive into the configs and stuff like the dockerfile, orchestration mechanism, distro choice, backups and so on for a server as seasoned as Hermitcraft.

This is a great idea for a video Xisuma. Its almost like we are on the same wavelength because I had wondered why no server admin had really taken the time to break down what running an SMP is like for RUclips. Then again, you are a creator and many server admins who do this are as well, so that can consume so much time. Our server admin is pretty capable and we have already implemented all the features of Hermitcraft that we like, but there are others out there who may need additional assistance figuring this out. Good on you!
man this is unbelievably helpful, there's plenty of people out there who would just keep this stuff to themselves for their own benefit but you're helping so many people by giving some of the best tips on running a server I've seen. You're the best, seriously.
Ayo. As someone who's messed around with linux distros and docker...I am glad that you gus are doing it yourselves. Its nice when the guy sitting in the server room is also playing the game on the server.
Making your version of minecraft available through curseforge is absolutely brilliant. it removes most errors people would get when trying to set it up by themselves, and lets you link to it whenever somebody asks about all the things you have installed. Thank you for providing some insight, can't wait for part 2 and 3
I like how you use Applied Energistics for visuals! Something that many players are familiar with and can easily visualize much better than complex real world maths and computer stuff!
Really cool insights! I love these technical things and you and your team do an amazing job running the server, sometimes mistakes happen like we've seen but you always fix it quick, like when the nether became the end chunks because of some folder mixing, or when you deleted docm's underground cannon, so thank you and your team for bringing us the best viewer experience possible and to the hermit's bedt playing experience!
Thank you for this video X! I love seeing this technical side of how to maintain a server :D It gives me some more tools that I didn't know existed to keep my own worlds healthy and also extra options for making the vanilla aspects of the game more custom and refreshing without delving too much into mods w/ friends who are not mod-savvy. I'm excited for the rest of the videos keep it up!
Interesting video. Thanks for the quick list of the important mods. I generally run pure vanilla on my server, but getting some of those optimizing mods could likely really help things out. Coords finder and the silent mobs mods are also both technically non-vanilla things that I think all my players would be interested in as well since they don't really harm the vanilla experience other than not needing to mute mobs in certain areas.
As some one that is running their own server( I was handed the reigns earlier this year) this information is vital. I look forward to the other videos because I'm having some problems that you may be able to help me with. Thank you.
Quite a but ago you said something like, "you should try making your own server like hermitcraft" and last year at about this time I did just that. Thanks for the very informative video! A lot of the stuff you talk about in this video I'm already doing for my server. We need more people though. 😞
Ps: We've had so many x-ray and hacked client players. It's very hard to find legitimate minecraft players, and it's even harder keeping a vanilla server engaging. Xisuma if you read this, we had paper before but we wanted to goof around with audio player, but we lost the ability to use a sit plug in that we were all having a LOT of fun with. Idk if you could point us all in the right direction of a fabric version of sit. Just a thought. Love your content man. 🫡

loved the part one of the configuration of HermitCraft, still to this day a lot of us are amazed of how HermitCraft has grown, thank you Mr. Xisuma and to all HermitCraft members of doing such a fantastic job of this wonderful series!
Thanks X! Looking forward to the next 2 parts. This is fascinating. Could you explain what happened with Doc’s chunks in the overworld and the nether? He obviously spent hours in both locations making his super powerful laser. How did that get lost?
well i for one would LOVE an overview of your pterodactyl installation and why you put yourself through the trouble of maintaining it when you only need to host a few relatively small-scale things
Hey X, i really recommend you use starlight and C2me on the server instead of phosphor, as starlight is faster than phosphor by a vast amount, and c2me multithreads chunk loading properly, resulting in better mspt and faster chunk loading(if you have over 6 threads)
C2ME is currently in alpha, so it isn't a good choice for server stability. And starlight can impact light mechanics, instead of just improving performance, while phosphor has essentially no impact on mechanics.
this is incredibly nerdy but from someone who really enjoys coming up with in-universe explanations for technical and game features, things like world-pruning have such awesome potential for minecraft/server magic system/worldbuilding headcanons
This is fantastic.. love the background information... alot of people don't realize the 30 mins video watched on RUclips, takes days/weeks of not only game play but this kind of stuff to maintain the environment.. hats off to you sir for the job done and sharing the information.. looking forward to the other videos..
Some questions/curiosities I still have: - What's the process of adding new CustomModelData like? E.g. something like a hermit messages you with the resource, you add them all every Sunday? Is there any worry about a hermit adding something which is too unminecrafty? Do you have like an established standard of what is and isn't allowed? - Have you ever made a mistake with world pruning, accidently deleting a chunk with stuff in it?
Thanks for taking the time to put this series together, I run a server for some friends and hadn't even considered world pruning! Huge help on performance.
The value contained in this video would be easy to underestimate. The information provided, and the way it is organized is a reflection of years of problem identification, failure, learning, solution creation and implementation. By providing this information X and all the Hermits are enabling any of us to create a community such as theirs, with almost zero barrier to entry. It would be easy for the hermits to withhold this information, with hopes to "strengthen their market share". More Mob Heads has been in every Minecraft world I’ve played since I first found out about Vanilla Tweaks. I can’t imagine the game without it at this point
I personally am really interested in the physical configuration of HC, what OS it's using, does it use docker or runs on bare metal, what other software is used to make it run, etc.

I just love Vanilla Tweaks! Can’t play vanilla Minecraft without my favorite data, resource and texture packs! It’s such a great service and it’s for free, thanks Xisuma!! 🙏

Literally have been researching this for a while and just decided today to look at it again as I had someone interested in doing the server. Quite a coincidental upload. Much appreciated
This was awesome Xisuma! From my perspective, this was a wonderful learning experience. Your explanations were thorough enough to either explain in detail the purpose in why a choice was made or you provided you helped point out a resource that could be used in research to customize/personalize a community's own server. Too often people when asked may spam a performance improvement mod list, or a server build with little explanation, & not realize that the person asking may be asking because they are in need of not just the tool, but the reasoning behind using the tool. You can't give a person a multimeter & expect that person to find where the short is in the house without explaining how to properly trace a signal.
Can we get a three hip hip hooray for all the people working behind the scenes of Hermitcraft to make it work, AWESOME all of them. Hip Hip hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray.
i always wondered how hermitcraft really works. glad to see how its going etc. keep it up! this series is insane entertaining and fun to watch. without hermitcraft i wouldnt be the person i am today
Thank you so much for this! Idk what audience you expect for these, but even as someone with a fair amount of technical server experience this was SUPER helpful. Idk how, but I was unaware of the chunk pruning mod! Server size is really the only issue we're consistently running into, and knowing this tool exists is going to drastically help. :D Really excited to see parts 2 and 3- keeping any group going for 10 years is tough + impressive, nevermind one with as much potential for problems as 'our creative endeavors/ jobs where everyone is in different time zones'
I think it's cool to have these surface level videos, but as a highly technical person, I would love to hear more about the details of what sort of settings you've found good/bad results with when configuring the actual server hardware, useful dashboards, firewalls, ensuring stuff comes back online if it crashes while you're away, disaster recovery, backups, etc.
Thanks you so much for this video! 😍 Running a server & being a huuuuge Hermitcraft fan (I watch Hermitcraft everyday, old and new!), I've dreamt about a video like this - and getting a whole series, that's just straight up amazing! 😍❤️
This is actually really helpful as my friend and I are possibly looking at starting a server. Lot of notes taken. Looking forward to the next two vids!
Thank you so much X! I manage a bunch of small casual servers for me and my friends. Its really interesting and educational to see how someone does as such on a larger scale and, seeing the similarities such as trimming down the unused chunks. :]
If you would ever like to do a deep dive into what it takes to setup the distros and dockers etc. I would definately watch it probably multiple times to follow along and get a server up and running. More of a learning thing rather than an actual need to have a MC server Thank you for taking the time to do these videos
Can't wait for the other two parts. You guys are top notch content creators. Thanks for this kind of behind the scenes videos and all the information you share!
I remember a few years ago I asked you on twitch if you ever had any plans to make a small series that talks about your "role" as an admin and the sort of things that you do behind the scenes, for better insight as to what you do, and for those that may want to do this themselves. The answer you gave at the time was no, you didn't see yourself making a video like that, and weren't really wanting to explore making that into a video or series. But I'm glad you've made this video now, it's given me a lot to go off. I'd love if you made more videos like this that talk about this part of the process as it would help folks wanting to run and admin their own servers the same way you do with less friction, learning from someone like you with experience. :D Great video X, would love to see more like this!
Fantastic Vid X. I learned a few things for sure. Can't wait to see the other installments. You should be proud of yourself! Good information clearly presented.
I’ve learnt a tonne over the years from watching X’s videos about hosting minecraft and it has made a huge difference in my own Minecraft community where my role is similar to that of X in hermitcraft. Thank you X for providing such high quality informative content, you have forever made a difference in the lives of people like me and the lives of their communities. ❤
Imagine if Mojang kept up and actually provided solutions in vanilla for at least some of these problems. For example proximity chat in game, more advanced camera tools, performance updates and other things like that
thank you for doing this series! i have been making my own "hermitcraft" servers for a while and it is real nice to see all that goes on behind the curtain
Damn, I wasn't expecting this video to be so bare bone. I'm one of those guys who run servers in containers with automated backups on my own hardware and I would have loved to know more.
Where do you host the server (at someones house, renting space in a datacenter or something else)? What are the server specifications/hardware? Do you run any other software on the server?
As someone who is hosting small to big community servers and also youtuber projects since 10 Years I really found it interesting seeing other "admins" using for example things like pterodactyl to easy their lives :D
My friend was hosting a server once and mentioned how the chunk loading caused a lot of lag. So of course as the good friend I am I waited until they weren't paying attention to what I was doing and ran in a straight line, bringing only a boat for the ocean, then asked them to guess what I was working on.
I am so hecking excited for the next videos in this series xisuma is one of the most well spoken youtubers I know and seeing him answer questions ive run into running my own mc server is such a treat
ayyy a question i've had for a while that i never thought would be answered! i think i figured you all had just bought a server (since web services/hosting is expensive as hell) but it's cool to know for sure! i'd imagine it's a server being taken care of at some data center, yeah? can't imagine the infrastructure in a residential area would be great for pushing data all over the world
To join the conversation about servers, I've had mine from Hetzner lately, and using a docker image from itzg (Geoff Bourne) to run all of my servers, vanilla, or modded. It works flawlessly
Well I think it would be really neat if you told us about more technical side of hosting a server. I think a youtube video (especially one made by someone as experienced as you) IS a great place to learn about setting up debian distributions with docker, pterodactyl control panel, setting up SSH/SFTP and subscribe. (Whatever that things are. I'm really curious about that last thing. What could it be?)

Thank you for this video! I have long wanted this video to happen. Looking forward to the next part!
Thank you, X. While I will never host my own server, it is really interesting to see how you all do it and what is involved.
More of a learning thing rather than an actual need to have a MC server
Thank you for taking the time to do these videos
Really looking forward to the social aspects!! Great video, X! ❤
The video I wanted from years. Thanks Xisuma
absolutely loved the AE2 setup in the server room
just started a server, this is exactly what i've been looking for! thank you so much Xisuma!!!!
I see that other smp owners are taking notes :) good job xisuma
Neither to say excited for today's charity event and huge probs to all hermits and guests ( empires players ) and scar .
Ohhhh love these behind the scenes type vids
Can't wait for the other two parts. You guys are top notch content creators. Thanks for this kind of behind the scenes videos and all the information you share!
I really enjoyed this. Chock full of information. Will definitely continue to stay tuned.
Great video X, would love to see more like this!
For example proximity chat in game, more advanced camera tools, performance updates and other things like that
Really good video Xisuma. A lot of people including myself have always wanted to ask you this question.
thank you for doing this series! i have been making my own "hermitcraft" servers for a while and it is real nice to see all that goes on behind the curtain
me and my friends have been looking to set up a dedicated server so this'll be incredibly helpful!
Damn, I wasn't expecting this video to be so bare bone.
I'm one of those guys who run servers in containers with automated backups on my own hardware and I would have loved to know more.
I'm really loving this content, it's like you're answering every question thought I've had about Hermitcraft.
Awesome, thanks for putting together this pack! I’ve always liked how even with these mods the experience still is about as vanilla as it gets
Great info X, it's always a treat to peek behind the curtain of hermitcraft
Where do you host the server (at someones house, renting space in a datacenter or something else)?
What are the server specifications/hardware?
Do you run any other software on the server?
It's so cool how much work is put into the Hermitcraft server! Thank you X and helpers!
As someone who is hosting small to big community servers and also youtuber projects since 10 Years I really found it interesting seeing other "admins" using for example things like pterodactyl to easy their lives :D
X: You need to be very careful when it comes to pruning
Docm: ...
My friend was hosting a server once and mentioned how the chunk loading caused a lot of lag. So of course as the good friend I am I waited until they weren't paying attention to what I was doing and ran in a straight line, bringing only a boat for the ocean, then asked them to guess what I was working on.
The background footage in this video really makes me want to revisit season 7
I am so hecking excited for the next videos in this series xisuma is one of the most well spoken youtubers I know and seeing him answer questions ive run into running my own mc server is such a treat
A terrific presentation - containing an abundance of juicy information !
Always wanted to know how hermitcraft was run
You are not the tecnoblade, he is dead
@@dieselboy.7637 he never said he did, let him use that pfp it doesn't harm anyone
ayyy a question i've had for a while that i never thought would be answered! i think i figured you all had just bought a server (since web services/hosting is expensive as hell) but it's cool to know for sure!
i'd imagine it's a server being taken care of at some data center, yeah? can't imagine the infrastructure in a residential area would be great for pushing data all over the world
To join the conversation about servers, I've had mine from Hetzner lately, and using a docker image from itzg (Geoff Bourne) to run all of my servers, vanilla, or modded. It works flawlessly
Thanks for this
I've been thinking about starting a small server and had no clue where to start.

Now Scar’s hat IS a good example image for the custom pumpkin hats XD
Well I think it would be really neat if you told us about more technical side of hosting a server. I think a youtube video (especially one made by someone as experienced as you) IS a great place to learn about setting up debian distributions with docker, pterodactyl control panel, setting up SSH/SFTP and subscribe. (Whatever that things are. I'm really curious about that last thing. What could it be?)
