  • It’s that time of the week again! It’s time to Declutter another section of this hoarded basement!! On today’s episode I talk about how to Emotionally DeClutter. This is something was doing subconsciously since I started decluttering. I didn’t have words to it before but I knew I was making decluttering decisions by this internal emotional scale. Once I realized I was doing that, this was the best way I could explain Emotional Decluttering.

I don't think you know how important this is. Explaining how the proces works, the emotions and how to get through when conventional declutter methodes don't work for you. You explain it so well. Love the basement series.❤👍

You're the first person in my life (and I'm of a "seasoned" age) that's made sense in the emotional journey decluttering is. The light bulb just went off that I've had decades of traumas. Now it makes SO MUCH sense why i couldn't tackle it before like i can now! It HAD to be baby steps and only as my psyche would allow it at different times.
Today forward, I will STOP beating myself over why I didn't clean up my spaces, I'll STOP traumatizing that little girl inside, I'll STOP the belief that I've lived a wasted life, I'll give her grace and move forward in good health and healing
Thank you SO much for opening my eyes 😚
    Keep up your ministry ❤️

The basement is really coming along so well. I think you will definitely reach your goal of fully decluttering it this year.

Can I give some feedback? Is there any way you can maybe do half your basement declutters this style where you educate about hoarding, but also do some declutters where you just talk through the process live as you declutter? I really like that style of decluttering videos! Not sure if others prefer the educational videos or the “talk as you go” style.

I will never let anyone throw out my stuff. Having other people deal with my clutter is too stress inducing. It once broke out a fight because my emotions were not ready. It went sofar that my brothers threw out my passed away mothers diary which was very traumatic to me and they even tossed out old voice tape recordings of my grandparents. These are Things ment to keep. The other things I understand but throwing away actual sentimental Things...never again.

Sometimes those waves of emotions hit you and you need to process them within yourself before you can even create words to explain it to someone else. Your videos are fun, inspiring and I’m sure that just like me your other subscribers would jump at the chance to be in your basement with you. Those bullies had no idea they were being mean to such a valuable, lovely person who would grow up to be such a beautiful, sweet woman with such a beautiful voice she would use to help the world! I had a wonderful teacher in those mean middle school days that addressed our bullies, telling them they had no idea who they were picking on and who they would become in the future! She told them they might really change their mind about who they would like to like them and might really regret ruining their chances. We were so lucky to have a good, aware teacher! We weren't in your middle school but we are all sitting at your lunch table now! You are so helpful and we appreciate you!

Thank you for showing your messes and how you actually live in your decluttered spaces, and how you clean them up after they get messy again...(I've looked at about 8 of your videos today, so I have a lot of your ideas in my mind!) I can be comfortable with you because of your explations of, and honoring of, the emotional ties to the things we hoard...I like that you are not a minimalist, that your house and clothes and decor are still colorful and varied. I like that you have craft supplies and project materials so that you can still be creative. Thank you!

"Once I release it (emotions) from myself, it's also released from that item and I can freely let it go." I needed to hear that this morning. I just broke off a friendship where they were mistreating me similar to how it was in my childhood. I did the work of processing what happened as a kid and that's what made me realize I was being mistreated now. With your words, I'm realizing that I can trust myself moving forward because I've truly honored how I've been hurt in the past... Thank you for doing what you do.

Also love how you don’t even touch the hubby’s items and say it’s for him to do. When helping my Mom go thru items I always tell her she can keep whatever she wants let’s just put like with like, no pressure to get rid of items. Thank you for shedding light on this disorder.

Something that must be positive in your life, I would think, is you've been married for how many years and have 2 beautiful boys. You ARE safe. Letting items go from your past life is actually freeing. It's emotionally and mentally freeing and not holding you back. I know I've heard the thought of....what if there was a fire. Could you grab 5 things quickly that you value/need? That always makes me get rid of more stuff. It's a motivator. Keep on trucking along. I look forward to seeing you freeing yourself of the past and enjoy what you have now right in front of you. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! 💛

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU because your channel has given me the confidence to try & kick hoarding (I know my triggers & causes) This weekend I'm doing my first ever car boot sale (kinda like a yard sale) & I'm actually looking forward to it! I've just filled both my car & my friends car & we've agreed that whatever we don't sell, we are immediately donating to the charity shop on the way home so that it doesn't come back into the house. you have no idea how glad I am that I found your channel a few years ago! I remember exactly how terrible I felt when I had to deal with all my hoard and clutter. I held onto some things because they made me happy, some because I didn’t want to deal with traumas they represented, and I held onto other things because seeing them made me feel bad and guilty and that was my way of punishing myself. Now I’m doing so much better, like you are, now that I know I can let myself feel emotions, pass through them, and come out the other side unscathed…AND have a nice space to live too! ❤

You are not only safe and a good person, you are also loved very much!
By your hubby, your kids, your family and your friends.
You are appreciated by your employer for all the extra miles you go, especially in December.
You are appreciated by your church, for the sharing table and all the other good deeds you do, as well as by your community.
And you have your heart healers, who support you on every step you take, and are proud of you for the looooong way you’ve come!
Some learn from you and maybe have more patience with a relative, or more understanding and support for a friend.
For others you are the good example who gives them courage to start their own journey, by opening up to a trusted person, by seeking therapy or by overcoming their hoarding trauma in any other way.
You have auch a big and positive influence, that this easily weighs out the few bullies who didn’t know better than to go after the sweet quiet girl. Some of them have not grown since then and maybe are still unhappy bullies, but you have grown SO MUCH 💜 And some of them most likely are ashamed of what they did to you, maybe they are even watching your videos and by now tell people they know you!

I am only 1 minute into your video. Have been watching since the beginning. Motivated to get to where you are with decluttering. Currently, I would not have let that pencil go and would have found where I have all the other pencils and put it there even though I have wayyyy too many pencils already. Bravo to you!! I still have some work to do emotionally. I have noticed for me when I declutter I freak out at a wide open space. When I declutter I noticed I tend to spread out what’s left and fill that open space up. Less items, but not completely clear. I have an uneasiness about the completely emptiness. Almost feel like I got rid of too much or something so it makes me feel better when I spread it out. Then little by little I come back to what’s spread out and slowly begin decluttering again. Hi Melanie and thank you so much! Subscribed immediately and set the bell notifications on :) Can't even describe how useful the topic of the video is. It's very special and it's better then many professional videos which focus on problem, not values.
My life have changed to some extent, your approach is precious!!
    Wishing you all the best!

Although never a hoarder, I once felt that possessions protected me from childhood poverty. I still have to have a good supply of new towels since I only had an ugly rag for a towel as a child. I do not hoard them but they must be fluffy and in perfect condition.

I really appreciate what I’ve learned from you. I’m not a hoarder and all my life I’ve easily made logical decisions to get rid of stuff. But I found your videos a bit better we found it we can’t have any more kids. I was feeling really frustrated at myself for procrastinating on donating all our baby stuff, but because of your videos I realized I wasn’t emotionally ready to get rid of it. After I realized that I was able to slowly get rid of things bit by bit and now only the bed is left. But I’m ok with that; I know someday I’ll be ready to let it go too.

Thank you for explaining your journey so well. I recognise so much! Although I am not a hoarder on a big scale, I realise my emotional connection to stuff and the reluctancy of trowing them away... Our histories sound very similar and I am so happy you are in a better place and keep improving yourself :) It gives me hope for the future, where I am able to make the same steps as you. I am surely gonna use your methods, as I feel they are the best way for me too. Thanks so much again and God bless you

I love your videos and have watched since the beginning. I just think you should not have them so choppy where if goes back and forth between you and the decluttering. Could be just me but it’s had to focus on both switching so much. Please don’t think I’m trying to be mean that’s not my intent at all just trying to help ❤

@@ahoardersheart I have ptsd and severe anxiety but have been put on the right meds and have worked with wonderful people to help me learn techniques to help deal with my anxiety. Took a lot to comment and like I said previously it could just be me I have ocd tendencies due to the anxiety (how it was explained to me lol) so take my comment as my opinion alone I would NEVER want you to be untrue to who you are and how you create. Just throwing my opinion out there

What amazing insight and advice. What about not wanting to get rid of things because of not wanting to waste. I hold on to things because there useful I might need them one day or there expensive items and maybe I should sell them ( never seem to get round to it ) or maybe it's a craft item and I might need it one day. It's almost like saving money has become a job for me 😢

Decluttering when a person's 'not ready' will be more harmful and make the hoarder accumulate MORE. From personal experience of hoarding for 20 years and I only just decluttered 70% of stuff (90 storage bins) last year over the course of 10 months. It requires weekly therapy as well as help from friends and love ones. It's true, decluttering does sometimes create physical pains when the emotions are so strong, we feel pains.
. One thing I don't do is to retrieve any item back. I either go straight to the dumpster, or give it to a shelter or if all else fails, hand it over to the local shop's recycling programs.
