    That's a cool trick. You could use it on single color projects, too! If you have five balls of the same color, you could join them all before you start. then the only ends to weave in would be the ones used to join separate pieces, like sleeves to body.

    Your video has sparked my desire to start working on my blanket again - that's saying something since I have hardly done any crafting since I had to leave my job working at a yarn store. Thank you Katie! I hope life with the little one is going well.

    Katie is always so well prepared; and may have recorded some episodes to cover the rest of October in case she went into labor. In any case, you deserve your privacy and I will continue sending love, prayers and good energy your way for a speedy delivery and a healthy, happy mom and baby Matthews! 🤗 ❤️❤️. I love the way you make your magic knots. I’ve been debating for a long time over what type of blanket to make and you just helped me a great deal. Whether I crochet or knit, I’ll still need a magic ball so that’s what I worked on yesterday! Thanks so much Katie!

    That join is life changing!!! You can really cut it that close and it stays put? What a great way to join yarn anything in the middle of a row or round. I appreciate your thoughts on the blanket projects. I do love that crochet blanket which seems more my style in terms of being a relaxed project. I adore that mitered square blanket but I worry about perfect gauge across so many squares. With the crochet version it looks like it's just a matter of adding new yarns whenever and where ever. I don't crochet very much, but I think I can manage this project. Yours is beautiful!

    I always have two on the go - one fingering and one everything else weight. I use twice as many lights as darks while making the ball - fantastic project and uses up every tiny little scrap and makes something really lovely - taught myself to crochet just to make one of these. and now I am one my fourth!

    I love the idea of a magic ball to make a granny striped blanket. I have a pretty apothecary jar that I’ve been filling with all my bitty balls of leftover fingering weight yarn and it’s getting pretty full so now I know what I’ll do with them 👍🏻 btw I am impressed you can still sit on the floor like that at this point in your pregnancy 😉

    That was brilliant and so well explained.Can you se this technique when joining yarn to sew a jumper ?

    • @InsideNumber23podcast
      @InsideNumber23podcast  5 лет назад

      Personally I wouldn’t use this technique for a garment because a magic knot - amazing though it is! - will never give you the strength of weaving in your ends. As garments undergo more stress during usage - being pulled on and off etc. - I prefer to weave in my ends for security. But as with all things it’s really personal preference!

    • @lindaeg
      @lindaeg 4 года назад

      I do use this knot on my sweaters I just don't cut the ends of, I just hold them to the working strand and knit them together. Then the weaving in ends is done on the go 😊

  • @ShortCircuitMom
    @ShortCircuitMom 5 лет назад

    Thank you Katie! I love the magic ball concept - makes is to much easier! I started a miter square blanket but I love this so much more. I am going this route instead. OK, probably a stupid question- but I am not understanding how I can use any weight yarn. Do I need to double strand the fingering weight if I also use heavier weight yarns such as worsted? Hope you are feeling better!

    • @InsideNumber23podcast
      @InsideNumber23podcast  5 лет назад

      I have used all kinds of weights in this blanket, from light fingering to worsted, and I’ve held them all as single strands and crocheted them all in the same way. I find that although this obviously creates slight differences in the thickness of what I’m crocheting the stripes hide these differences really well and you basically can’t tell that different weights of yarn were used together! It’s a personal preference thing, you may just want to stick to one weight of yarn, but I love being able to throw anything into this blanket!

    Forgive me if this question has been asked. Are the instructions for washing the same as for any other wool wash projects? Would I need to hand wash and lay flat to dry?

    • @InsideNumber23podcast
      @InsideNumber23podcast  5 лет назад

      It depends what yarn you have used, if it’s all superwash then you can machine wash, but personally I hand wash all my hand knits and dry them flat 👍🏻

    Is it important to watch which colors are next to one another?

    • @InsideNumber23podcast
      @InsideNumber23podcast  5 лет назад

      It’s personal preference! Like I said in the video you can’t really do a huge amount of colour management when using a magic ball because your colours are already joined as you work with them. However you can always cut you yarn, remove a colour and then rejoin with another magic knot if you find that your getting two colours next to each other that you don’t like. I know some people use a majority of light colours so they don’t get too many bold colours all together, I just tend to pick colours I like and hope for the best!

      Inside Number 23 Thank you for your prompt reply! I love your podcast. And I love magic knot. I was curious if you tried to work with a color wheel or anything when you made color choices. My choices don’t seem to work together as well as yours!

    Hi Katie! Have you ever had an issue with your magic knot coming undone? I have tried magic knot once on a project with very slick yarn and my knot came undone. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Maybe I just didn't tie it tight enough or the yarn was too slick?

    • @InsideNumber23podcast
      @InsideNumber23podcast  5 лет назад +1

      I’ve never had an issue with my magic knots coming undone. That being said I wouldn’t use this technique for something that would undergo more stress, like a garment that would need to be pulled on and off, just in case that did happen! I save this technique for blankets 👍🏻 I do think that if you’re using a more slippery yarn it may be more likely to come undone, but I have used yarns with silk content in my blanket and not had issues

    • @knittakes2
      @knittakes2 5 лет назад

      It happened on my first sweater I ever made, so now I know not to do that. I will keep this technique just for blankets, as you suggested. Thank you!
