'Te Ahi Kai Pō' translates to the 'fire consuming the darkness' and is a reminder that we must always hold fast to what is important. To remain resilient and resolute in the face of absolute adversity . Peace out.
I laughed with you, I closed my eyes with you and I cried with you. Thank you for sharing this. Like most Maori in New Zealand Aotearoa, I grew up with Music and singing. We are very talented and blessed.
Beautifully said kiwigirl8420. I was the same as you watching this reaction. ❤
Mauri Ora Kiwigurl
This is what music does. It's like opera: even though you don't know the words, the music moves you. Your reaction was beautiful and honest.
Great Reaction Buddy, So as you know we are Māori we're Tangata Māori from Aotearoa (NZ) We express everything by "Full Body Language" We shake our hands to signify " We are alive " shaking hands(wiri) sez " LIFE " we have a god of heat waves we move our hands like him like a heat wave moves. When expressing an item the movements depict the words of the song. (ie) the word love - hands would shake over yr heart etc etc at 12.05 they're saying An enduring fire, that can't be put out.. so if u watch their hands their depicting a ever increasing fire🔥 that just builds .
Kia Ora - Live Well
What is this world that I face?
I would be nothing without you
Why was your life wasted in this battle?
The sea of red coats
The land stained with blood
Lost you are to the pits of the earth
My peace is found
My heart is still
I feel your presence
As the fire burns away the darkness
Shine my beacon
Shine through the despair
Shine through the darkest of nights
My beacon
My peace is found
My heart is still
I feel your presence
As the fire burns away the darkness
My fire is sparked
By Kautetetū
My fire is sparked
Its heat is intense
My cold skin will be warmed
My quivering body will be warmed
An enduring fire
A fire that will never be extinguished. Peace out.
The intense emotion comes from the huge loss of lives as the Māori people defended their country from the British just like many other nations before them.
And the memory's carried forward never to be erased carry forward never to be forgotten. Even in the nations national Anatham (God Defend New Zealand)
I love this song!
❤❤❤❤❤
where was the Aroha in your interpretation, or are we putting another spin on it
Awww you made me cry watching you cry! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
And the movement where they shake their hands is called a Wiri! 😊
I love it!
Emotion comes through in all languages, even when you don't know the words. Great reaction mate. You have good empathy with others. I cry with emotional music a lot. Cheers Bro
The hand movements are called the “wiri” and we do this because it shows we are alive and living and we stop doing this when we die ❤️ also check out Stan walker ft the levites amazing grace , you’ll notice this is our culture the way we sing , we sing with our ancestors voices 🤍 they are the reason we are heard today ! Ngā mihi x

Bro, wtf, you made me cry, bruh..all good though brother, your reaction was epic. Hello from Brisbane, Australia

Thank you Sir for one of the most heartfelt, sincere and respectful reaction I’ve seen, and I’ve seen this reaction before but didn’t understand the depth you were expressing at the time, I do now. Thank you so much 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Wow what an awesome reaction!! Still brings me to tears today.
Love your sincere and emotional expression that touch your inner man thank you for your reaction Teeks is a humarie/humble Maori man and talented. 💕💕💕
Authentic heartfelt react. Love and light brotha
Like Australians, Maoris have a lot of slang and acronyms! They also have a treasured national language and culture, amazing talent, depth and soul! I learnt Maori traditional songs at school in Tasmania, never forgotten (and I have been there) - so beautiful! 😪
This is a new song. Maori culture and people have faced many challenges. I love to see a resurgence of music and people standing tall.
teek's is amazing.... Check out Ria Hall's original version of this. The choreography is spectacular and so moving. It's a song about recovery from war and loss and that spirit is captured perfectly.
Here's me thinking, oh no its a slow song and its in te reo Maori, he's probably not going to get into it....next minute he totally gets it ❤️
Love this reaction, your a sweet heart.
Sir what a beautiful reaction 🎉❤❤❤thank you
Hey bud, Te Ao Maori ( the Maori World) is very spiritual & extremely powerful....your reactions are beautiful and sincere, kia kaha! (Be strong)
When you have time, check out Stan Walkers new track 'I am'.
Stan is a Maori artist who was sought out by American Director Ava DuVernay to write a song for her new film 'Origin'.
Stan infused some of our Maori Culture into his composition - I think you might enjoy it.
Don't worry Phez I'm watching you, watching them and my eyes are leaking too. It just makes you human.
Awesome reaction, great to see you back.
Today a wiri can mean lots diff movements like shimmering water, heat waves falling leaves etc.
However I can recall my kuia/karua (elders)saying te wiri (hand shaking) movements represent the flight of th piwakawaka(fantail)bird.
Teeks is big over here in South Africa! I love his music!
Aww love your reaction to this !
So beautiful to see how touched you were by this beautiful waiata. So powerful and an absolute joy to listen to 😊
Beautiful waiata...if you need something a little more upbeat, try a round of Poi E :) Or Kiri Te Kanawa singing Pokarekare Ana
In love your reactions , they're real and raw.
What is the wiri in the Kapa Haka? The hand movements are called 'Wiri' .
The wiri (quivering of the hands) is an integral part of Māori movement, seen in haka, as well as making the movements deceptive, which is essential in the arts of combat. The haka pre-dates the arrival of the earliest Pākehā explorers and settlers in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
The Wiri - shaking and vibrations) to show we are alive
you dont understand a word but you understand the spirit of it
Welcome to Aotearoa. I'm proud to be a Kiwi...
This was very beautiful😌
Tena koe, arohanui ki a koe ❤🤍🖤 You don't have to understand the words to feel the wairua (spirit) You're blessed to have such a vast well of emotions to feel from bro
When their hands vibrate its called wiri. It symbolizes the living world around us. Tree branches moving, water shimmering etc Its a way of connecting with nature
Te Ahi Kai Pō.
This song + video was my way of expressing the inter-generational trauma experienced by Māori as a result of land confiscation, and the severe impact it has had on Māori culturally, spiritually, psychologically, physically.
Today, we continue to fight against a system that has never intended for us to thrive and prosper. Instead, it has now succeeded in creating division amongst our neighbours, relatives, kinsmen.
'Te Ahi Kai Pō' translates to the 'fire consuming the darkness' and is a reminder that we must always hold fast to what is important. To remain resilient and resolute in the face of absolute adversity - ahakoa ngā uauatanga me ngā pēhitanga o te wā e tāmi nei ia tātou, kia ū tonu ki ngā mātāpono o ngā mātua tūpuna....
We must rise above.
Ria Hall
Thank you for the beautiful reaction, proud New Zealander ❤
APO=Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra.
Love is a losing game we get it love it all so emotional but pulling the heart strings in Te reo māori brilliant nz orchestra is mint at caputring emotion we live for this in Aotearoa NZ
Stan Walker bro. Start with “Amazing grace” then “I am”. 😊
Itz called the wiri, feeling the life force, from the past to the present
Its called wiri when hands are moving. Maori roll the Rs in their language .
8:59 Thank you for your reaction. I recommend you listen and watch Stam Walker singing 'I am'
APO is Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. Auckland is the Capital city of New Zealand .
Me too. Very moving.
I reckon u understand us…u can feel our wairua/spirit…..arohanui brother
Teeks isn't necessarily about Opera. He is about music. And the language of music isn't English, Spanish, Maori, or any other spoken language. The language of music is emotion.
The power of voice is amazing. I am very proud of being Māori. Kia ora cuzzy
You should check out LAB’s studio version of “Yes I do”, its a banger
What does the Māori shaking hands mean?
Kapa Haka, a traditional Māori art form | The Kid Should See This
“Haka is all about the expression of your inner energy. The shaking of the hands,” says Johnstone, “that's an expression of our life force … it's showing that there's an energy within you.” In Māori, kapa means a row, line, or a company of people, and haka means dance. Peace out.
Stop Using " Google Search " Just let a Real Māori Who Knows What Their Talking About To Answer The Question! Haka is NOT A DANCE - Kapa DOES NOT MEAN LINE - So again Do Not Educate On Others Cultures via Google!!
That’s the same reaction I have when I hear Māori song
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Bruuuuthaaaa, I think you need to come join our culture lol....but str88888up, we ain't a stressful culture if ya really Wana know lol, and most of all....we love who we are....
I don't speak Maori so unsure on the validity of the translation but here's the lyrics as Google reports them in Maori then English.
He aha rā te ao e hora nei
Ka kore noa ahau i a koe
Nā te aha rā koe i moumou atu ai
Ko te kura
Ko te kura koti whero
He onekura toto te whakangarotanga
Ki te riu o te whenua
I tau ai taku mauri
I tau ai taku ngākau
Ka rongo ahau i te aroha
Ka kite ahau i te ahi kai pō
Taukapo mai taku hinātore
Taukapo mai i te pōkerekere
I te pōuriuri
Taku hinātore
I tau ai taku mauri
I tau ai taku ngākau
Ka rongo ahau i te aroha
Ka kite ahau i te ahi kai pō
Ka hika taku ahi
Ki a koe rā kautetetū
Ka hika taku ahi
He ahi kā
E mahana i taku kiri māeke
He ahi i tāmō
He ahi e kore e mātao
