I've been speaking American English my whole life. I've never heard of this "Dark L" before. The way I pronounce "L" is that it is shorter at the front or middle of a word and longer at the end of the word. In both cases, the tongue is pressed on the ridge behind the teeth. Perhaps more of the tongue is pressed against the ridge on a terminal "L", but it certainly is not a sound that I make in the back of the mouth; I certainly don't use the uvula. I think, for foreigners learning English, it is helpful to understand that there are variations in the way native speakers of English actually pronounce the language.
I love watching videos on how to pronounce English. Not that I can't pronounce it, I just like to see an analysis of pronunciation.

Hi thanks for the two methods for Dark L.
Let's say we use your first method, which is to retract your tongue towards the throat. Then I wonder how you would link dark L with the following word starting with a vowel.
    eg.
    "rule of".
With method two (hold tongue tip againt the upper teeth ) I can understand the natural lisaison L- O, but how would you make it when your tongue is back and the tongue tip is off the upper teeth area?

I have no idea! 😄 This is linguistic terminology that I also use because the term is used and known by many students of pronunciation. Perhaps because the sound quality is "darker" and "heavier" compared to the "crisp, light L?"

Great! This is the first time I find a video lesson where I can actually learn how to make that sound without getting confused, or feeling like I'm not going to get it the right way. Your uvula tip is gold - I'll definitely go for it whenever I'm working on that L sound. Thanks for taking the time to help us out!

Awesome!!! You are most welcome! So glad that tip was helpful for you! And, well, any excuse to say "uvula!" Such a fun word! 😄😄😄

I couldn't agree with you more! Also, that's also a tough word to say because of that "v" sound, especially for us the ones who speak Spanish as first language - we tend to pronounce it as "b," hahaha! Keep it up!

Dear Keenyn, your videos are very helpful. Thank you very much. And it would be great if you could make guidance for the sounds /s/ and /z/, esp. for the plurals and the sounds /t/ and /d/ for past tense "ed/. Many thanks

The method of uvula is wonderful, but when I aimed the tongue at uvula, I started to confuse the sound I made with the sound 'r', which appears in words such as “car”, “hear”, “waiter”, etc.
