    • @SimplyDigitalMedia
      @SimplyDigitalMedia 8 месяцев назад

      @@micahdavis214 Hi, I contacted Rutlands and was able to sort it with their advice which was as follows:
      Adjustments to the levels of the table can be made by removing the bottom grill underneath the unit and checking the bolts and screws securing the table beds. It may be that one side is over/under tightened causing the alignment issue. If you require further assistance with the process, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us again.

    Returned mine, bed was unfinished with rough machined ridges making it impossible to push wood over and had sharp, unfinished edges. Poor product quality, never turned it on. Managed to find a Triton planer instead.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  Год назад

      Ye I agree on the rough bed however I can still slide timber across mine no worries. My fence is also trash however I've made my own accurate fence. It's cheap and does what I need at the moment however I'd love a decent floor standing model one day.

  • @AlexEllis
    @AlexEllis 2 года назад

    I've been looking into the combination planer thicknessers, but many people talk about how much of a hassle they are to switch between modes.
    Doesn't this technically only cover two faces? How do you do the third and forth sides? Wouldn't that normally need a thicknesser and table saw?

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  2 года назад

      Yes everything you say is correct Alex and I use a thicknesser and table saw in conjunction with the little planer.

    • @AlexEllis
      @AlexEllis 2 года назад

      @@karlpopewoodcraft I've been looking into getting set up with a thicknesser/planer function. A combined unit with a 10" width could do things as wide as scaffold boards as per your video on the table build. I guess you can't joint something that big though? What do you think would work best? I've heard that all these tools are really noisy and having separate units would cost about double compared to a Lumberjack 10" combo.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  2 года назад +1

      @@AlexEllis ye definitely super noisy mate, I use a thicknesser for flatting then the table saw or track saw for jointing the edge, I actually prefer the tracksaw now for this. I can't be arsed with changing a machine around every time that would do my head in lol I only use my little planer for small projects.

      That's unfortunate, mine is still going strong. I've given it to a friend and he's had no issues. It's a good few years old now as well with the same blades in, (regular sharpening)
      So what is causing it to tear up the wood? Sounds like dull blades or your attempting to take to much off? Is the wood dry?

    • @bobkelly841
      @bobkelly841 Месяц назад +1

      @@karlpopewoodcraft Thanks for the reply. It's a mix of damp and dry. The damp wood ends up furry and the dry wood has fish scales. I sent Rutland pictures today. Might just be a lemon. Hi, enjoyed your video.///suggestion... You coud have fixed the fens to side of the table, therefor not encroaching on the useable surface area ..even a small 2/3 mm rebate so it then lipped over on the top by that amount, but fixed the directly to the side, obviously setting it perpendicular, shimming if necessary. Good review I always enjoy your videos.

    Came on here this morning on the off-chance I could find a review of this planer as I was tempted by the Rutland's daily price drop on 17/05/22 (£150) and this was exactly what I was after - so many thanks.
    Looks like it pretty much fits the bill as I just needed something compact and accurate to flatten boards prior to putting them through the thicknesser. I had my money on the fence being the weak link, as they almost always are on these budget machines, but, as you demonstrate, no big deal making your own.
    So, you've cost me £150 today, Karl - cheers mate!

    Thanks for the review Karl, very useful. It’s a shame the manufacturers don’t go that little bit further and make the fence more reliable.I’m also surprised how light it was so it’s definitely worth considering. Looking forward to more of your builds

      Thanks Steve, ye incredibly light, must be because it's made from pressed aluminium rather than steel this would also keep the price down. Your right though if only they made sure to put that extra effort into the fence, pr the most vital area of the machine.

      He paid £160 for it and you expect more? Maybe if they used actual slaves to manufacture it, they could afford a better fence.

    Shame as the machine looks a nice portable unit.

      Not sure what I will get yet but it looks perfect for bench top use and that’s what I want.

      @@markjarman7819 it's easy enough to make a fence anyway mate, I would never tilt the fence so I just made it solid and square.

      Do you have any plans to review the hand held electric planer from Rutlands or any other manufacturer.

      @npc8027 honestly that's something I rarely use mate. I have a Eurbour hand held electric planer and that seems to do the job for me.

      I’ve seen a Silverline 344944 model that looks identical, do you know if they are the same makers? If you can recommend another make but not dewalt as I’m near my top budget already I’d appreciate it.
