I think what some people forget. Is that Henry was never meant to be king, his older brother Arthur had been trained from birth to be the king of England. Henry was not.
Darling Jewel but you would think, with both of them being Princess of England they would both get the same training. Anything could have happened to Henry's older brother...death💀 happened to Henry's older brother.
Natilie E. S. By training both to be King in same way it is more likely that the younger brother might cause trouble have a look at Louis the 14th as in his childhood there was massive instability in his childhood partly caused by his uncle so his mother treated his brother like a girl so he couldn't pose a threat
Natile, up until Arthur's death it was assumed that Henry would go into the church. If you train up all the boys in a family to rule, that could lead to civil war and jealousies.
katymvt Yes. But I also believe that Henry was bound to be the horrible person and ruler that he was due to the fact that he was only the spare. He immediately started off on the wrong foot. His jealousy of Arthur showed by his marrying Arthur’s wife.
Not obsessed. At that time, only a male could inherit the throne. The king's first and, at that time, most important role was to produce a legitimate male heir. It was also believed that the female determined the gender of the child. As a matter of fact, the laws of succession in England were changed just within the last 15 years and now it's the eldest child who stands to inherit, regardless of gender.
Only just though. There was a close call when she was to be arrested for heresy which was a capital offence. She got wind of it and was able to convince Henry she only questioned and spoke with him in order to learn from him and take his mind off the pain of his ulcerous leg not to influence him to reformist ideals, so her head was safe. Henry was old and knackered and in pain most of the time so probably had little appetite to lose yet another wife too.
Spendomaniac Archbishop Thomas Cranmer saved her. He warned her of her danger & told her how to handle Henry. I love the Book of Common Prayer, which was his baby. 👑
Anne of Cleves outlived him, too. She didn't resist the divorce and actually made out very well, as Henry was most generous, giving her property and allowances that made her more than comfortable. She was even given the title of "King's sister".
Barry Britcher there is a theory now that type 2 diabetes causes weight gain rather than the other way around. Carrying around too much sugar in your system would make you gain weight.
Jessica Jayes :I always understood that a wound to his leg, sufferered during a jousting tournament, became ulcerated in the days before antibiotics, which now would have halted the spread of infection! Certainly, he became more irascible as the pain became more unbearable, combined with increasing paranoia, suspecting plots and schemes among his enemies, real and imaginary!! In a way, he was a sort of Putin-esque figure, athletic, sporting, all intended to show off his manly strength and alpha male qualities and fitness as a leader! Jousting and hunting were his passions. But few seem to be aware that, whilst he didn't compose "Greensleeves", he did compose some excellent music, as well as being extremely well educated in Latin and Greek as well as theology, so much so that he wrote a book on the Catholic faith, which even impressed the Pope, so much that he conferred upon Henry the title of "Defender of the Faith", a title which still appears today on coinage around the Queen's head in the abbreviated Latin form as 'Fid Def", (Fidelis Defefenderis, or something like it!). In fact, far from being the "Old King Cole"/Humpty Dumpty" caracature, which has çome down to us, he was, in fact a gifted and cultured man and up to the time of his jousting tournament wound, was not a bad king in the context of his times!! Finally, far from being a Protestant, he remained a devout Catholic to his dying day!! All he did wàs to refuse to accept the Pope's authority in England, making himself Pope in England as Head of the Church, but I believe that the churches still continued to celebrate Mass in the way they always had!¡
Henry VIII was by all means a ‘ladies man’ - he was known to have swoon women with his poetry and music skills, and he had countless mistresses and many illegitimate children
The ulcer on his leg was acquired in a jousting match where he was thrown and afterwards, in a coma. It is most likely he bruised his brain in this accident. His personality changed radically after his "recovery." His early court was very young and they were party boys.
Penny Northcutt ulcer smell terribly in general so unlikely MRSA. Back than if he had that he would of died. I work on diabetic ward and the smell is beyond foul smelling. Although he got those ulcer due to the jousting match but I bet he was diabetic too xx
@@berryeyes667 my son had MRSA and it smells like an open sewer. I just assumed Henry had MRSA because the smell was described as being so bad. I've never smelled an ulcer so that never entered my mind. Thanks for the education.
Ramey Zamora I’ve seen some recent theories out there that suggest that the whole concussion thing isn’t strictly accurate, as the account of him receiving a concussion came from a doctor who wasn’t actually at the scene when it occurred and was writing from word of mouth that he had heard from another who also most likely wasn’t there.
Cara Ferdinands I wouldn’t say it like that. Henry was never a good ruler but his earlier days generally were less destructive. He merely seemed to be a bit power mad. But rather I think it was him getting too big for his boots after the break from the church, until his ego blew too far out of control.
Fun Fact: 1. The 2 wives whom Henry VIII divorced were born as royal princesses. His first wife, the Spanish Infanta Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of the Catholic monarchs King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabela I of Castile while his fourth wife the Princess Anne of Cleves was a German ducal princess and was the daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves and Princess Marie of Julich-Berg. 2. His 2 beheaded wives Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were members of English high nobility, and were actually first cousins being members of the House of Howard of the Dukes of Norfolk, the premier Duke in the realm and among the most, if not THE MOST powerful noble family in England. 3. His 2 other wives, Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr were members of the gentry and knightly families, families of courtiers who were just slightly better off than most commoners.
"Average age" does not mean that grown men usualy died at 45 years, and Henry was not an extraordinary old man when he died at 55! For a noblemen who did not attend the battlefield himself, this was not very old! Average counts all peoples deaths, and because of the hight mortality of children, the average was at 45. Once you survived the critical years of infancy, as a noblemen you had a good chance of becoming 60, 70 or even 80 years.
There was no understanding of the disease of diabetes at that time, but with all evidence of the king's gargantuan appetite, decreased activity with age and infirmity, and the massive weight gain, it appears to many historians that Henry probably suffered from metabolic syndrome, or Type II diabetes. The leg ulcers from an accident would have most likely healed with treatment had the king had good circulation and skin quality. It appears both of these were lacking if he had repeated leg ulcerations, the hallmark of a Type II diabetic.
@@LQOTW It also appears that way. Henry was, again, an unsatiated eater. Due to his royal status, he could afford to eat meat, and eat it he did! Lots and lots of meat...if Henry was a diabetic, a disease which causes much tissue inflammation, then he would be predisposed to gout secondary to his meat consumption. This guy was his own worst enemy.
Ann Etheridge How do you know? I'd imagine the misinterpretation, and outright deletion of facts would be rather simple, some famous guy once said: "History is writing by the victors".
Spehmaster G. You can look up dates that are corraberated by journals and letters including ones from outer countries. It's not a horrible video but not 100% accurate. There are implications and it seems to be slightly contradictory. It needs a bit more time to further explore these topics. I know personally that it's hard to make factual videos. I know I try to, but then again I'm new at RUclips. It's not completely inaccurate but dates to corroborate would be nice. I also noticed that they repeated themselves, which seemed.... odd. Just an opinion on how the video presented Henry. I'm not saying he was the greatest but the facts were not a whole picture of him.
As someone who wrote their dissertation on the functions of government during Henry VIII's reign, I would just like to point out that a lot, and I mean a lot, of government business was done while hunting. Politics was very personal, and a lot of government business was done in informal settings like walking, riding and hunting. Also the wrestling match with Francis was friendly, and there were no ill feelings between them until ,us, much later. This video is so exaggerated, and I hate it so much. Henry suffered a horrendous injury in 1534/5 while jousting, and paid very dearly for it later in his life. I could on and on for ages about how this video portrays him in such an unfavourable light, which is an incredibly biased interpretation of the evidence.
He wasn't always fat and insane; as a young man he was tall and handsome as well as being very athletic, well educated and an accomplished musician. It was only when he got older that he started to pile on weight, and the constant pain of his infected leg probably contributed to him going loopy
+Kjelly Lund Not true, he married Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour and Katherine Howard for love, or at least as close as he could come to it. His marriage to Catherine of Aragon was arranged but they did grow to love each other (he competed in tournaments for her under the name Sir Loyal Heart, and referred to her in letters as "my most dear and well loved consort") at least in the early years of their marriage. Even Katherine Parr he had affection for. His only truly arranged marriage was the one to Anne of Cleves, which was disastrous from the start.
Because when you are King no one but no invests NO to you. The only one Henry professes to love was Jayne Seymour. Her family put her in his path constantly even though he was married to Anne Boylen.
Um, Arthur never made it to being king and Henry the 8th was around 10 when Arthur died. Also Anne of Cleves out lived Henry and the rest of his wives. And at my school in America we learned some of these details too, I learned it in English class actually (my English teacher likes to give background on what we are reading). He also had an obsession with red hair...
I always wondered if he had picked up an STD, which he then gave to his wives...it seems as if they carried their first children just fine, and afterwards, it was the endless string of miscarriges, stillbirths, and sterility. And then there was this article. www.history.com/news/did-blood-cause-henry-viiis-madness-and-reproductive-woes
I'm not so sure about that. Some accounts say she resisted execution and the executioner chased her around the block. Others say he was just nervous because he was experienced and awed by his prisoner and just made a hash of it.
The school I attended we had excellent history teacher . Made history come alive . I live in Africa thanks to this man . He was passionate about his subject . His lessons of The Zulu Kingdom / Livingstone / Mungo Park / Burton & Speake . The Trekkers Brought me to Africa . Never regretted a day . Lived in some of the most beautiful places in Africa. He also taught us History of Europe . Not many teachers that can transfer his love of subject to a bunch of rough Northern England Catholic 14 - 16 year olds in the 1950s . God Bless Ken Martin and may his soul find eternal rest . He directed my life which I have never regretted 53 years in Africa , met a super woman have two sons & five grandchildren . Thank You Sir .
How is this what schools didn't want us to know?I went to school in England so I was taught very well about this horrible old tyrant because our history teacher was excellent and she had no time for old Harry anyway- she seriously disliked him! Will you please sort the pronunciation out as well- Salisbury is pronounced "Sahlsbry",Diarmud is pronounced " Dermud" and Henry lived in the 16th Century, THE 1500s,NOT the 1400s.Finally,you failed to mention about the massacre of the people in the North of England who rose up and rebelled against him in protest of his sacking of the monasteries. Those people loved the monks and nuns because of the way they helped the peasants and poor and Henry not only stole all their assets and knocked them,he murdered the religieux as well. Henry squashed this rebellion by hanging ALL of them, including the children! He was wicked, nasty, selfish egomaniac and his actions have continued to cause damage to this day!
I recently discovered a few years ago that William Penn was related to the Tudor Royal Dynasty and not exactly many people know that the ties his father had with aristocracy and nobility connections making William Penn more power in this position when he was here in the United States hidden secret sight of the people. William Penn is a Tudor, however his grandfather was John Tudor before/also known as John Penn. I recently discovered that I'm directly descendant of William Penn who founded Pennsylvania. I'd love to see more accurate history about William Penn.
He was married to Catherine of Arrogan his late brothers wife for about sixteen years - he thought the grass was greener with Anne but there lies his downfall - and sadly theirs
For Anne, yes, big downfall. For Henry...Depends on how you define “downfall.” Like many European monarchs he was always fighting with the church for wealth and power. Thanks to Anne, he became head of the church, all power and wealth was his. So, not much of a downfall for him there. You can’t even say this was a downfall for him from great monarch to tyrant. He wasn’t that good a monarch during those years with Catherine, waging wars, often on behalf of the church, that just left England bankrupt. But the affair with Anne certainly let him be as much of a tyrant as he’d always wanted to be. So, if we define that as a downfall...yes. 😉
Not quite. If Anne had agreed to be his mistress, rather than insisting "no marriage, no nookie," he would have held onto Catherine. Much as he wanted that male heir, it wasn't until he began to explore divorce, and the idea that marriage to Catherine (his brother's wife) had cursed him, that he got into the "male heir or she's has to go!" mentality for which he's so well known.
The church Henry created ruled that his marriage to Catherine was invalid. And that his marriage to Ann was valid. So, yes, he never divorced Catherine, but, according to the English church, he didn't have to; he'd never been married to her (which made Mary a bastard). So whether he was legally married to Catherine till she died depends on whether you believe only the pope could have annulled Henry's marriage. Henry arguably changed that law (of the pope being the only one able to decide such), and so, arguably, was not legally married to Catherine when he legally married Ann.
I’m confused about the title of this video. I studied Henry VIII at the University of Arizona (a “school”) and they taught me all of these things and more. So how exactly are these facts that schools don’t want us to know? Could it possibly be a provocative title in order to get clicks?
You do realise that the life expectancy at the time was low because of high infant mortality, and that if a person survived infancy and childhood, they could expect to easily live into their 60s or 70s? Henry's death at 55 was actually quite young for a person who had survived to adulthood.
Wrong, wrong and wrong. Average life expectancy was 35 years, add 10 because he was from the ruling class and could afford better and more food and a more leisurely lifestyle.
You can cite INDIVIDUALS all you want....but since antibiotics and true life-saving medical techniques beyond magic and superstition didn't exist and folks could be taken out by something as minor as an infected tooth, I'd tell YOU to consult any M.D. who is also a historian and take your head out of your ass. The World Health Organization did NOT officially note an average life span for humans at the 68 year mark until the 1970's. Also, for humans, consumption of animal fat has been in our diet since the time of the neanderthals, and more and more evidence points to the fact that this is our bodies' best source of fuel. Bread and wine? Well, that's another story....if people died in childbirth as often as you infer thus skewing the mortality statistics, the rise of world population growth would have been waaay off for the years following the 1600's and beyond.
I love you please please please do in the next video on shows you forgot existed or best theme songs of shows or least loved characters in shows anything that really has to do with cartoons and I'm good
Fun fact his corpse literally exploded after some weeks in the coffin. But no one had to clear all that mess, gladly there were some dogs around. That's a fact and I actually couldn't believe it at first but after looking for some information it seems that aside of his already rotting legs that I guess had enough puss accumulated his corpse was left for weeks before a proper burial (don't ask why...).
LifeInPink999 :In fact, his corpse was laid out on the kitchen table of Sion House,, where it exploded, fulfilling a prophecy that, '.....the dogs would lick his blood" which did then happen!
Most unembalmed corpses do explode (or at least leak nastily from various orifices) from the build-up of gases from our digestive flora running amok once we die; but when they're buried soon after death, you can't tell. The story about Henry exploding may be apocryphal, though; I can't find any documentation on it in a casual look, although lots of sites discuss it.
This video relates well known stories - mostly true I believe. What makes the author think that 'schools' don't want these things known. Utter nonsense
When you say that schools didn't want you to know something, what kind of school are we talking about? Grade school? Junior high? High school? Just how much knowledge do you think kids under 18 can retain? Besides, except for England, most countries just gloss over the high points of English royal history. If you want to really know a subject, it takes years of study and not a short RUclips video!
Bullettube- I do think this vid is aimed at people who did NOT go to school in England. If one did,one would most likely know most or all or even more than this about the horrible old bastard!
um, when it comes to History - it's more interesting with the most shocking details unedited. (and hell no I'm not dismissive of Education, and yield to the more educated regularly). But public education history curriculum is candy-coated and boring. Without the ugly full truth; it's impossible to understand the dynamics of any point of time
Old Hickory: I agree, but even in high school I read books that went into greater detail then what our text books contained. I mean our text books on world or American history were a mere 300 pages long! Think of it, just 300 pages for the entire history of the world! My teachers encouraged me to read and learn more. And this is what I found so galling about this video and it's assertion that schools didn't want me to know!
really it doesn't matter now with the internet (even though there are bullshit lies online) I'm not seeing young People admonished enough; regarding the use of advanced google searches; which limit domains results to .edu & .gov, so they're not digesting .com and .org bs. (although some orgs are good). University servers (edu) are pretty vetted, and so is us government, library of congress info.
Not Amused I'm from the state's and fascinated but the dark and middle ages in England.i been reading and doing research for years.Theres so much information and we covered very very little about England in school.Except for the revolutionary war and war of 1812.
For the way he sanctioned the murder of Lady Salisbury, his wives & other innocent people, Henry VIII remains should be removed from there place of burial. And either cremated or ditched at sea. Truely, he deserves no better. His selfishness, heartlessness & brutality even eclipses King John. And Easily Richard III. Poor RIII only acted brutally to secure his own steady hand on the power reigns. Thereafter. No. And people bang on about how evil HE was. RIII doesn't even make it in to the top 5 most brutal. 1) Henry VIII. 2.) King John 3.) James II 4.) Mary I. 5.) William I.
LoL a 6'2" Henry of England decides to jump on 6" Francis 1 of frances. And gets turned every which way by loose!! And then goes home broods and starts a war. Wow.
The two wives Henry VIII beheaded were actually cousins? As members of the Howard family Katherine Howard and Anne Boleyn, Anne's mother was born a Howard having married Thomas Boleyn?
Kevin JEWELL Elizabeth Boelyn, Anne's mother, was sister to the Duke of Norfolk. Katherine Howard's father was a younger brother. Since the eldest son inherited everything, the younger brother was left with little. Katherine was brought up by her grandmother.
Kevin JEWELL this is far from uncommon. Howards and Seymores were also related. And, even better... it was considered ideal to marry within the family to retain "good genes and wealth," so the big families during this era were Seymore, Howard, Parr, Neville, and Tudor... Boleyn lost quite a lot of pull, but still lurked inside the court occasionally. It's insane. And they're all related by blood, marriage, or both. Actually, One of the executed wives (forgetting if it was Anne or Katherine) had had an affair with her brother. It's all very odd. Even into modern era (queen Victoria is more modern) this was a normal sort of happening. Queen Victoria's husband Albert was her first cousin. Very much inside bred.
Brooke Poeschl Anne was alleged to have the affair with her brother, to whom she was very close. Relationship connection between the Howard's and Boelyns: Elizabeth, sister of the third Duke of Norfolk, married then-Sir Thomas Boelyn (later Earl of Wiltshire and Ormonde). Katherine's father was a younger brother of the Duke.
Katheryne Koelker thought so. I know Catherine Howard had an affair with someone at some point, both before her marriage and during... but I forget who. A courtier, of some sort. But it's all very complex.
There are so many wrong facts in this video. When Prince Arthur died, Henry the VIII was second in line to the throne, but he wasn’t king yet. This was because Arthur was a PRINCE, and not a king. When his father died, Henry became king. It’s common knowledge.
A documentary on Kings Henry's later health. It was discovered because of his weight he had diabetes and suffered syphilis and ED (erectile disfunction) which could be why he couldn't make more babies and had many stillbirth babies earlier.
ED would not cause miscarriage: the sperm would remain normal. But it has been seriously speculated that Henry had a blood antigen, a relatively rare variant of the Kell protein, which was incompatible with that of most women, and which caused his partners' many pregnancy losses.
RANDOM VIDEOS OF EVERYTHING 2018 current scholarship discounts the theory he had syphilis. The treatment of the time was mercury over a six week period and Henry’s records do not indicate that his physicians ever administered it to him.
Why do have to listen to an American commentator, with a dreadful American accent, on this video? A British commentator would never use the word “freakin,” and he would also know how to pronounce the word “Salisbury” correctly.
She was lucky to have escaped w/ her head intact. Why any woman would marry such a lout/murderer is beyond me. I would have taken him out in due time, given 1/2 the chance.
HappyJanae 10 I'm not sure if Catherine Parr would be executed if she refused, but she knew King Henry the 8th would take the situation in his own hands if she refused him or didn't give him an answer. She also knew that God would want her to marry the king. I think that's Catherine consented to marry the king.
The wife that got the best deal was Anne of Cleves. She willingly agreed to an annulment or divorce and to be treated as a sister. She was given a palace or two with servants, an income, jewels, and clothes. She was also a friend to both of his daughters and managed to stay out of the limelight. She still died relatively young compared to our expectations today, but she died with her head on her shoulders.
He was tall and impressive like his grandfather, Edward IV, who also started putting on weight and losing his looks due to overindulgence. He must have had the same metabolism. But Edward only lived to be about forty.
Cloth of Gold: cloth with actual gold woven in; Not "golden cloth" which implies only a color. It's pronounced "salz bry" Not "salis berry" ... do more research !!!
badlongon actually the Church of England as we know it now refer to as the Anglican communion was actually finally codified under his surviving daughter the long reigning Queen Elizabeth the first. You know the one from Elizabeth the Golden Age. Henry's bulshit only caused it to be necessary
Hello he brain injuries from a justing accidents badly ulcerated leg witch minx ill probably have blood poisoning to and was in constant pain could not get any exercise cause of the pain is in he would have drank wine to numb the pain he was in which I would have done watch King Henry virtual autopsy it very interesting I don't know how he survive his Justing accident and with legs like his what's the autopsy you understand
Wow...I thought Bloody Mary Tudor (Henry and 1st wife daughter) was the one that went bat shit crazy and caused the most deaths....I hate bloody marys but this is a topic I will bring up at the next Sunday brunch lol
You forgot one fact about Henry that schools don't teach you: His wives started a girl band and became the biggest hit show in the West End of London. Get tickets at www.sixthemusical.com/london/ticket-info
'Did not want you to know'?? Most of these are common knowledge. AND BTW it's the field of the CLOTH OF GOLD not GOLD OF CLOTH DUH, he became king when his FATHER died, not his BROTHER.
Charles Schwartz Yes. His brother who was the heir predeceased his father so the throne fell to the younger Henry. Had this not happened England and probably Scotland Wales and Ireland would be different places today. For one thing England would probably not have lost 200 major Monastic Houses and the social system that went with them. There would have been a different line of succession; no Regicide, no Civil War, no Parliamentary confiscations and genocide in my country Ireland, no Glorious Revolution, no Culloden, maybe no Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, Smollet & and that great line of English literary genius. It's widly believed that a Catholic system would produce a renaissance in Art but would not have favoured a Literary Renaissance as liberal English Protestantism did. What a difference a monarch makes. A mixed bag of outcomes some bad, good & great .
Arthur died shortly after his wedding. Catherine said they agreed not to have babies right and said she was a virgin when Arthur died. Henry VII couldn't decided what to do with Catherine. About 6 years later Henry VII died. When Henry VIII became King he married Catherine because he was in love with her. Catherine's advisors got a "Bull" or a legal paper from the Pope saying it was okay to marry Catherine because of her sworn statement of being a virgin on Arthur's death.
Yes! I read it in a book, but if you look up Arthur Tudor Wikipeda will tell you the same thing. Remember royalty got engaged for politics at a very young age. Arthur and Catherine wrote to each other in Latin for a while and then it was determined when Arthur turned 15 he was ready to be wed. I am from the South. Both of my grandmothers told me they were 14 when they wed. One of my grandfathers was 14 years older than my grandmother!!! My mother only dated my father from the age of 15 and married him at 19. They have been married 61 years! I had a neighbor who was only 5 years older than me and she married her husband at the age of 13 and he was about 18 years old than her!
I know. I'm 60. By the time I was 12 I could do laundry - line dry and iron, all the housework and cook simple meals and do yard work. I babysat my little brother and a neighbor saw me with my 6 month old brother. I babysat her newborn till they moved - the baby was 2 1/2 years old. My little sister raised her son this way. He is now 36 has his Masters and so does his wife. It seems like small towns and The South raise kids to be worker bees! lol

An Abundance of Catherines, the Tudor version.
I’m going to be pondering this

Kittie Bubz only for a little bit. Poor Katherine Parr died in childbirth

I already knew most of these from watching the show "The Tudors" on Netflix, which I highly recommend 👍
I love " The Tudors" but the actor who played as Henry is very handsome and attractive man, which is wrong.
The Tudors and actual history have nothing in common.
Jay Menberu Henry was handsome during his younger days though.
Is "The Tudors" on Netflix???
M. AZUL yes it is it’s very entertaining.

He was obsessed with an male heir and his daughter end of ruling for almost 50 yrs
Because his father had told him to have a son to heir the throne.

Weight gain and ulcers could be the effect of diabetes, which Henry most likely would have been diagnosed with today.

The ulcer on his leg was acquired in a jousting match where he was thrown and afterwards, in a coma. It is most likely he bruised his brain in this accident. His personality changed radically after his "recovery." His early court was very young and they were party boys.
It was said that the oozing from the ulcer stunk badly. There's a possibility he could have had MRSA.

@@berryeyes667 oh yes, he's been recovered for quite some time. Thank you for your kind concern.
"Facts that schools did not want you to know", our school pretty much taught us all of these :/
Henry's personality changed drastically after he suffered a concussion during the lists. His brutality really began after this episode.
Std's did not help his mind either.
Cara Ferdinands I wouldn’t say it like that. Henry was never a good ruler but his earlier days generally were less destructive. He merely seemed to be a bit power mad. But rather I think it was him getting too big for his boots after the break from the church, until his ego blew too far out of control.
Fun Fact:
Thats right. Another fact though is that ALL his wives were descendants of King Edward III
#1 He didn't divorce them, the marriages were annulled.
Not to be rude, but most people do already know these facts. Nevertheless, it is still interesting and useful for those who don't 😊👍
The meeting in France at Balingham with Francis was called “The field of cloth of gold”, not “the field of gold cloth” as stated.
you are right
Yes. This video is shite.
Anne Nephew survived into his seventies. The Duke of Norfolk survived into his seventies as well
Absolutely the most basic information. I was hoping for something new. Drat.
Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of the Tudors would have known all of these. LOL
I think he was diabetic which would account for the leg ulcers and massive weight gain (which can be a cause and a symptoms of type 2).
Henry injured his leg, thighs and head during a jousting accident, meaning he could no longer do sports leading to a huge weight gain.
Shie H. Or Hypothyroidism
@@fatgrl1935 Didn't he also have gout quite badly?
@@LQOTW It also appears that way. Henry was, again, an unsatiated eater. Due to his royal status, he could afford to eat meat, and eat it he did! Lots and lots of meat...if Henry was a diabetic, a disease which causes much tissue inflammation, then he would be predisposed to gout secondary to his meat consumption. This guy was his own worst enemy.
A lot of mistakes and misinterpretations of facts here, sadly.
Ann Etheridge totally agree!
Ann Etheridge agreed

Knew these already. In fact, learned them in school. Your title is misleading and ultimately disappointing
Loveday Funck same here.
Yep. Me too.
May I ask at what point in school did you learn about it? I just want to know when I should expect it.
Was Henry the 8th the person Robert Baratheon’s character modeled after?
yes
So, how are these facts new in any possible way? Some of this info isn't even correct.
Henry sure had a lot of ladies for not being a ladies man.
Do you think he wooed them by his charm? There were fixed marriages, and he also used power to force himself into the wedding.
That aberrant behavior was the result of his concussion and uncontrolled type II diabetes.
An embarrassment to the English throne.
My God he didn't wake until eight? The cretin!

These are not secrets, you can easily find these facts in any documentary. Good video however.
Margaret Pole's botched execution was horrifying even for those brutal times.
I learned she was senile and never fully understood what was happening to her
I'm not so sure about that. Some accounts say she resisted execution and the executioner chased her around the block. Others say he was just nervous because he was experienced and awed by his prisoner and just made a hash of it.
Not only was her execution horrific but he also decapitated her son and her little grandson - if the dvd version is accurate.
Who was Margaret Pole?

For sure!
he was married to Catherine for 24 years before Anne
Not quite. If Anne had agreed to be his mistress, rather than insisting "no marriage, no nookie," he would have held onto Catherine. Much as he wanted that male heir, it wasn't until he began to explore divorce, and the idea that marriage to Catherine (his brother's wife) had cursed him, that he got into the "male heir or she's has to go!" mentality for which he's so well known.
moonwalk1031 imo what i said
The church Henry created ruled that his marriage to Catherine was invalid.
He was also sadistic. Boiling people alive, stretching people limbs off and burning people alive.
Lol this is all the schools taught about him
I’m confused about the title of this video. I studied Henry VIII at the University of Arizona (a “school”) and they taught me all of these things and more. So how exactly are these facts that schools don’t want us to know? Could it possibly be a provocative title in order to get clicks?

Henry was amazing, even if he was kinda nuts.
You do realise that the life expectancy at the time was low because of high infant mortality, and that if a person survived infancy and childhood, they could expect to easily live into their 60s or 70s? Henry's death at 55 was actually quite young for a person who had survived to adulthood.
Jovan Weismiller
Wrong, wrong and wrong. Average life expectancy was 35 years, add 10 because he was from the ruling class and could afford better and more food and a more leisurely lifestyle.
Henry's daughter (Elizabeth l) died at 69. Draw your own conclusions.

Every documentary I've seen said he was a handsome devil. Why am I not seeing it?

The two wives Henry VIII beheaded were actually cousins? As members of the Howard family Katherine Howard and Anne Boleyn, Anne's mother was born a Howard having married Thomas Boleyn?
Kevin JEWELL Yes, it's true, sad to say.
Oh God, what inutile clip. Everything is not History but biographic datas. Stupid film.

ED is a classic side effect of uncontrolled diabetes.
RANDOM VIDEOS OF EVERYTHING 2018 current scholarship discounts the theory he had syphilis. The treatment of the time was mercury over a six week period and Henry’s records do not indicate that his physicians ever administered it to him.

For one thing England would probably not have lost 200 major Monastic Houses and the social system that went with them.
There would have been a different line of succession;
no Regicide, no Civil War, no Parliamentary confiscations and genocide in my country Ireland, no Glorious Revolution, no Culloden, maybe no Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, Smollet & and that great line of English literary genius.
It's widly believed that a Catholic system would produce a renaissance in Art but would not have favoured a Literary Renaissance as liberal English Protestantism did.
What a difference a monarch makes.
A mixed bag of outcomes some bad, good & great .
OK, I know... Good facts but the music assumes there's a climax
Soooo Arthur was "married" at 15?? Cos they said Arthur died at 15 yrs old & then Henry VIII married his bros widow Katherine of Aragon???!!
Amy Page Kaviani - thanx for info. but married at 15yrs old?!!
Amy Page Kaviani - WOW! & kids of 15yrs today (21st century) are so childish & weak spoilt brats!
I know. It seems like small towns and The South raise kids to be worker bees! lol
HE JUST WANTED FUN (and a male heir but, whatever.) .
No hate.
Henry 8th the Trump of his day.
Alison Armstrong pretty retarded statement
