"Lack of focus is self-sabotage." I needed to hear this. I can drift around the house and find so many distractions. Getting another tea, cat quality time, RUclips, Pinterest, other household or gardening duties, etc. Sometimes these distractions help my mind mull over ideas, and dialogue or scene ideas do pop up. Mostly, though, it's just distractions. Thank you.
Heh... I've been working on one story for over 35 years. Don't really have any plans of publishing it, but I would like to have it finished before I croak. Got over 400,000 words written so far, and still haven't gotten close to the end. The sad thing is, if I'd published it in the multiple volumes it will have to be, one at a time, I'd probably be quite wealthy now. ... but then, I didn't intend to write it at all, initially. I planned to draw it, as a graphic novel. It was figuring out that I couldn't and didn't want to draw that many panels that convinced me to write it all down. So as of right now, I've got a nearly half million word story just sitting there, waiting for me to finish it.
With respect, Guard Dog, you seem to be a hobby writer. A compulsive one at that. Let me kindly say that you may not understand readers. If you are not reader-centric, then you may need to start over. May I suggest you watch the movie "Wonder Boys" (2000) staring Michael Douglas. It's about you and other writers like you.
Thanks for making this, I really needed to hear this. I definitely have problems with focusing and dreaming too much on story ideas rather than writing them down.
I’ve actually found a way to avoid editing while I write. Believe it or not, I’ve been writing the first draft of my latest book on a typewriter. I only edit when I transcribe the book into the computer.
You are making your work harder in order to make it easier. I admire that. Sometimes we need to go to extremes to retrain ourselves, don't we? I'll bet you're a getting a big creative boost out of your process.
There is a kernel of truth to the idea of "writing drunk and editing sober" - although I don't think you need to get drunk or high to access that. I find that my writing comes out best in the early-early morning or in the late night hours, when I'm too tired to edit myself as I write, but I edit in the morning or afternoons when I am most clear and awake, when I can be most careful with my edits. Drunk, no. But wonky from being in a dreamstate, maybe....
100%. Outlining has kept me In Lane and Organized. Guilty of a few of the Self Sabotages on the List.😬😅 I've known the Cures but thanks for the Motivation!
I've heard that a way to get the writing flow if you're stuck is to turn off the computer monitor and just power through it. Then later go back and revise.
Hi, Can u please upload a video with subtitle because i sometimes can't understand those deep words you speak out. By the way, your videos are very so informative and and i start watching all the videos u uploaded. Thank you so much for this sir...
Thank you for watching all my videos. Keep your eye out for more. I upload each Tuesday morning, sometimes more often. My videos have subtitles automatically added by YT. Turn them on using the "CC" button. They are not perfect, but they're very good.

"Plan your work and work your plan." perfect!
Thank you for this helpful video. Self-sabotage has been a big part of my writer's journey and it's comforting to know I'm not alone.
