Those LED's look like high power LED's to me (@ 4:09 ), and there's 4 of them in series. But in the end you're right, for normal LED's you might need some resistors.
Of course, if you drop 6 v from a 9 v battery, these 6 v (1/3) are wasted. It's a better idea to put these LED in series and only 3, also, a small resistor is always a good idea because the internal resistance of some batteries is very low.

At step 3 you should solder a resistor between each LED and the voltage from the battery. Because LEDs run with 1.4 volts, and the Battery has 9 Volts! This might damage or destroy the LEDs after a time.
Four LED's in parallel 3 volts drop for white LEDs. 9 volts supply. 6 volts will be dropped across the resistor that we add in series. Let's say we want a 20mA current for each LED: 20mA * 4 LED's = 80 mA R = E/I Resistance = 6 volts/80 mA = 75 ohm resistor. What power rating will the resistor need to be? P = E2/R Power = 6 Square/75 = 0.48 Watt A half watt, 75 Ohm resistor will be needed.
OK. The only thing I can say is that the drop light is a bit of an accident waiting to happen. The very sharp edges of the aluminum can are too exposed and will cut like a knife. Maybe cover the edges with some duct tape?

According to Ohm's law, the Current is not limited if not used with a resistance so they still have a chance to burn out :P
