Hi Capt Darren. Not long time ago I found your channel on RUclips, I love everything you show there and for that I want to thank you and encourage you to continue. When I see you do installations and experimentations with your little daughter, that excites me, I also have a daughter who now is a thirty years old girl, but when she was little she always liked to do technical things with me and that is why today she has extraordinary skills as a result of those experiences. I would like if one of these days you could make a video where you share your experience using the SunSDR2 DX transceiver; I am seriously considering buying one of these. Thanks so much.
Nice video, Capt! Since I use a vertical as well I’ve been wanting to put down a loop on the ground for receive but can’t because my lot is too small and it would literally be in the radiating field on the vertical. I’ve been looking at these magnetic receive loops for a while. I’m interested to know if you ever have a situation where you can’t hear a station on it but can hear it on the vertical. The reason I ask is I know these really should be rotated and I’m interested if this can stay stationary and pick anything up.
I'll be in Jacksonville, FL on 2/23 and will test it out with weak signals on the 43' vertical vs the receive on the loop. I agree with have a rotator on the loop.
which one you like more for transmit? the Zero Five or the DXCommander I saw you in another video? How high you ended up leaving the loop? Im in FL too but in a stupid HOA so right now I have my Chammeleon Receive Loop bolted to the aluminum pool cover (about 10' and im thinking to lower it like at 5-6' but away from aluminum and other objects. Im looking forward to add an 800amp so still debating between the DXCommander which already own but not mounted yet or a vertical. 73'
I've moved my W6LVP loop to my Texas station. For my transmit in Florida, I prefer the DX Commander which I pretty much can tune for very low SWRs. 8 prefer the DXC with an inverted L for my transmit.
I'll be back in JAX for about a week starting on 2/22/2022 afternoon. Need to go and get my Medical appointments done so I can get back to flying. Haven't flown in almost 2 months.
I've moved it to my other QTH where I now have it on a rotator to null out Air conditioning RFI noises from my neighborhood. Works well with my Anan 200d.
It seems a good device, a good RX Antenna in the shack solves a lot of troubles by line noises, led-lamps and so ones... but I'd like to see the same RX test on 80 even 160m bands, is it possible? I wish you good DXs and best regards from PR7TU.
That's funny about the LED lamps. When I transmit HF, my LED light above my monitor turns on and off and changes the light colors. I'm not at my QTH but can test it for you when I get there. 73's
@@javiersalazar5020 You could use it with a noise canceller device and phase out the noise. MFJ makes one and also Timewave has the ANC4. It would also be helpful in that duty if the loop could be rotated. A loop antenna should have a very sharp null.
Can see and hear the noise floor difference straight away, that loop takes out the electrical noise you have on your main antenna and makes the signal and voices more intelligible.
I am wanting to do this with a an SDR DUO with a receive only mag loop. DX Engineering had a pretty pricy one, comes with a pre amp and other components. The one you have looks like it’s doing the job but was is the loop radiator such a small diameter. Or does that only matter with a transmit mag loop? My FT 950 and 991 do not have the receive only antenna input which would be nice. 😊how would you proceed. Thanks you do get presentations and your helper is just to cute. Thanks
Also check out the MLA-30+. I have both the W6LVP and MLA-30+. I will make a future video of setting up my MLA-30+ on the roof as my receive antenna and my 40m horizontal loop for my transmit antenna. That will be interesting because both will be on the 2nd floor and in close proximity of each other. My advice is sell the FT950 and 991 and get yourself the IC7610. It has receive antenna ports in the back. I show you it in this video. Or if you want to also, check out the Expert Electronics on the SunSDR2 DX. I have both radios but at different QTHs. Good luck on your decision. 73's De N4VFR
@@gkiltz0 I've reported RFI and they've come out within a day sniffing for the Power line noise. They fix it and then a different power line interference pops up. Never ending situation. I need to move out to where it's quiet for HF operations.
@@DarrenN4VFR Based on my experience, if the neighborhood has underground wiring, you won't have trouble. If it's just that street/group of a few buildings you might still have it!
If you just want to listen on HF or perhaps have a cheaper version as a receive only antenna, take a look at the MLA-30+ loop antenna on ebay. It's a whole lot cheaper. I've purchased one but haven't put it up yet. Busy with life with the family.
@@DarrenN4VFR Did you ever try the MLA-30+? I've seen less than stellar reviews (by real people at least) and its primary appeal seems to be price. I'm looking at the W6LVP for my SWL setup.
@@em7dim9 Yes, right now it's my primary receive antenna at my Texas station and will replace it with the W6VLP. Here's the video. ruclips.net/video/BjDbZDvCgV8/видео.html

Cool, thanks for your reply. I guess I’ll stick with the DX commander. Do you know how high you installed your loop in Texas?

can you show the internals of the T/R switch?
Could you test on low signal stations as opposed to S9 stations.
Also run dual watch, easier to see both antennas 📡

Hi nice video! Diid you try the loop on yhe Low Bands, 80 and 160? And how did it work?
No, I haven't. I put my loops away until I can get a good deal on a Yaesu Rotator.
@@DarrenN4VFR i see. Im suffering on high noise floir on 80m and I thought of getting this antenna to try to lower my noise issues.
