It is totally lame we can't actually install Linux apps on ChromeOS. Google makes great things like ChromeOS and Android and then removes the parts that would be it even more useful.

Don't be fooled into just getting whatever cheap one you see. You'll be in the same boat I am in, and end up with one running ARM and completely being compatible with ONLY chrome apps and downloads. I'm completely and utterly dissatisfied.
I recommend going the Crouton route on both Intel and Arm Chromebooks so you get the best of both worlds without rebooting! I have the Acer C7 with the ram/ssd upgraded though it crashes when it sleeps since I upgraded the ram over 4GB (currently 8GB). I also have the Samsung Chromebook 2 that I've only used Crouton but I assume it wouldn't be much different than the Acer with a "native" install...
This video is so handy, my school is going 1:1 with chromebooks in January, and I want to revert back to Chrome OS when I give it back in like 2 years. So handy!

I have the same exact chromebook, but once it was done with its first download and questions were prompted, I did not know if I had to hit "control L" or "control D" to start again. I've had to start this process completely over!
Although I haven't tested it yet, and I am writing this down and watching this about 6 years later I really hope it works because it does get boring not being able to play cool games.

Those are actually two commands, not one. Curl downloads files. That's all. The bash command isn't putting it into a local file. The local file is already there placed by curl. Bash opens a new shell and executes the file. I'm sorry, but you botched that one up badly.

Sorry! The best method by far is performing a BIOS FLASH with seabios. (Thanks John Lewis ) I was then able to install a pure unadulterated full install of Ubuntu Studio 16.04-LTS. This is on a Acer C710-2847 Chromebook with 8 gigs of ram and 320gig HD. It's the model with 3 usb ports, VGA-out, Ethernet jack, HDMI--out, combo headphone jack.

You don't need a new kernel, just disable the trackpad using the function keys before installing, than once it's installed turn it back on. Should work, if not than install the drivers.

gotta get the correct chromebook. some wont let you download applications if they aren't on the web store... which isn't accessible unless you're already running chrome, don't be fooled.
You need to remember in a real tutorial you must show the viewer every step you follow. For example you never said how to return Chromebook to regular mode. I mean this is the first I program one of these machines!

Linux Mint is better then standard Ubuntu.
You can also install Cinnamon on Ubuntu, so not really. Unless you use the Debian version of Mint, which I prefer.
