I tend to make fairly dense rock music. More and more, I find delay works better than reverb for what I need. It still creates a sense of space and atmosphere, but it gets out of the way faster than reverb (if you set it right). It also can offer more of a sense of width and motion to a vocal. A stereo delay with each side set to a different timing, or a ping pong delay., can help the vocal move around the stereo field in an interesting way. But you don't have all that wash of the reverb tail that comes with a long reverb or the boxiness that comes with a super short reverb. Most metal mixers I've talked to only use delay on vocals, so I think it must have something to do with track density and tempo.
Totally agree! Reverb can get messy, whereas delay is a bit easier to control in many respects as you mentioned. Of course every situation is different, and perhaps reverb is the only texture that can work for a job, but it’s always good to explore the alternative options if reverb is clogging things up (hence why I talked about delay at length in one of the points 😉).
BRAVO!
The video i desperately needed and will watch during working on the vocals and reverbs in a while..Thanks Dan !
I got you! 🙏🏼
