@@shepherdlavellen3301 Techically, the Eagle WAS designed for BVR. The positive thrust to weight ratio means the F-15 can gain lots of speed very quickly, also meaning it can lob missiles extremely far. This makes the Eagle one of the BEST A/A fighters of it’s time. Many can argue that it’s still one of the best, although the F-22 effectively took the Eagle’s place. Though it should be said, the F-15 can engage in a close quarters dog fight. It was not meant to do this, and it is not the greatest at it.(Although it works just fine) The F-18 would outturn an F-15 almost 100% of the time, if both planes were at relatively slow speeds, because the hornet is known for being able to rapidly turn at slower speeds. The best move for the F-15 in the event of this happening, is to take the vertical. If the F-18 is at a slow speed already, the F-15 would be able to use its insane twin afterburner engines to gain speed and go vertical. The F-18 would either be forced to follow and possibly stall out (since it’s at slower speeds already) or disengage, gain speed, and then try to re-engage. At this point in the fight the F-15 could try and use this time to get on the hornet’s six, lock them up, and send a Fox-2 Also, it is not necessarily true to say the F-15 was dead three times. Because the F-15 is also seen visibly flaring. These are pre-flares, also sometimes called 'panic flaring.' This is when a plane starts to flare and chaff BEFORE the opposing jet fires a missile, in attempts to confuse or disarm any missiles that may be launched in the next few seconds. Pilots do this, because the time to react after a missile is launched can be as little as three seconds when the fight is this close. We do not know, because technically live missiles were NOT launched in this dogfight, but the F-15 could have dodged some missiles with it’s pre-flaring
F-15 can beat the F-18 easily in sustained turn rate but you have to keep up around 340kts for that. F-18 has much more ability to 'point the nose' with high AoA. Both have their strengths in a an actual close in engagement.
@@ashton150 F-15 can easily get speed up compared to the F-18 as the 18 does not have a great thrust ratio. In real life though if a F-18 gets in close with a F-15 with modern weapons such as the Aim-9x it has a big advantage in being able to point the nose.
@@Cragified The F/A-18 actually has better sustained and instantaneous turn rates than the F-15 because it’s a lighter aircraft with better wing loading and more lift. But the F-15 has a pretty significant advantage in terms of thrust to weight. This is a spitfire vs BF-109 situation. The Spitfire can outturn the BF-109 all day everyday but struggles against the BF-109 in a boom and zoom or climbing spiral dogfight where thrust to weight reigns supreme over drag and lift.
